3h-1,2-Dithiole-3-Thione Suppresses Lps-Induced Proinflammatory Responses In Macrophages: Potential Involvement Of Antioxidant Induction, Nf-Κb, And Nrf2, Hong Zhu, An Bui, Arben Santo, Y R. Li

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Previously, we reported that 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), an Nrf2 activator, acted as a potential chemoprotectant against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced mortality in mice. In view of the critical involvement of macrophages in the pathogenesis of LPS-induced endotoxemia, in the present study, we investigated the protective effects of D3T on LPS-induced proinflammatory responses in cultured murine RAW 264.7 macrophage cell line and primary peritoneal macrophages and the potential involvement of antioxidant induction, NF-κB, and Nrf2. We showed that treatment with D3T resulted in increased levels of a series of antioxidants in RAW 264.7 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. These included the reduced form of …

Multiple Cranial Neuropathies As The Initial Presentation Of Primary Ductal Adenocarcinoma Of The Lacrimal Gland, Jane S. Kim, A D. Proia, Jason Liss, Joel Morgenlander, Landon C. Meekins

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Primary ductal adenocarcinoma of the lacrimal gland is a rare, aggressive malignancy that clinically and histologically resembles salivary duct carcinoma. Similar to other malignant epithelial lacrimal gland tumors, ductal adenocarcinoma typically presents with unilateral proptosis, pain, upper eyelid swelling, palpable mass, diplopia, ptosis, and blurred or decreased vision. Rarely, primary malignant epithelial lacrimal gland tumors may first present with multiple cranial neuropathies due to occult spread to the cavernous sinus, as in this case. With such a vast differential diagnosis, a practical yet systematic approach to multiple cranial neuropathies, as guided by clinical history, exam, and neuroimaging, allows for a …

Photon Harvesting And Light Trapping In Pentacene And Ptcdi-C13h27 For Organic Solar Cell Application, Rezq Naji Aljawfi, S.M. Sherif, S. Akef, Mohamed A. Swillam

Faculty Journal Articles

The deep understanding of optical and spectroscopic properties of organic semiconductors is essential for designing the organic photovoltaic solar cells (OSCs) and estimating their prospect performance. In this work, the optoelectronic properties of pentacene and PTCDI-C13H27 conjugated molecules were estimated using density function theory (DFT) calculations. Hence, the parameters of energy gaps, charge transfer (CT), open circuit voltage (VOC), reorganization energy and light harvesting efficiency (LHE) have been extracted using the DFT at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. The results predicted that pentacene and PTCDI-C13H27 molecules possess an efficient broad-band photon harvesting over the visible spectrum with absorption maximum at 643 and 514.5 …

On The Degrees Of Freedom Of Irs-Assisted Non-Coherent Mimo Communications, Karim G. Seddik

Faculty Journal Articles

In this letter, we consider the problem of intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) assisted non-coherent MIMO communications. The transmitter employs non-coherent MIMO codes and we allow the IRS to send its own information by switching the phases of some/all of its reflecting elements. We prove that the phase-modulated information from the IRS is completely transparent to the non-coherent MIMO transmitter and receiver, with no need for any performance provisioning or even knowing that the IRS is transmitting data. Moreover, we characterize the achievable degrees of freedom of the proposed transmission scheme gained by allowing the IRS to send extra data. We …

The Impact Of Beekeeping On Household Income: Evidence From North-Western Ethiopia, Zewdu Abro, Menale Kassie, Haymanot Alebel Tiku, Bedaso Taye, Zemen Ayalew Ayele, Workneh Ayalew

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The existing literature acknowledges the benefits of beekeeping as a livelihood diversification strategy and income source for farmers across the world. However, the impact of beekeeping on income at household level has rarely been quantified. Furthermore, the few existing studies provide conflicting evidence and the methods quantifying the impact of participating in beekeeping are not rigorous. In this study, we identify key determinants of such participation and quantify the impact of beekeeping on household income. We use a cross-sectional data set collected from 392 randomly selected households in north-western Ethiopia, employing the endogenous switching regression model with estimated treatment effects. …

Renewable eco-friendly options for crop protection are fundamental in achieving sustainable agriculture. Here, we demonstrate the use of a biodegradable lignocellulosic banana-paper matrix as a seed wrap for the protection of potato plants against potato cyst nematode (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis. Potato cyst nematodes are devastating quarantine pests of potato globally. In East Africa, G. rostochiensis has recently emerged as a serious threat to potato production. Wrapping seed potatoes within the lignocellulose banana-paper matrix substantially reduced G. rostochiensis field inoculum and increased potato yields by up to fivefold in Kenya, relative to farmer practice, whether or not impregnated with ultra-low doses …

Saying A "Hail Mary" To Make A "Hail Mary": Religion And Its Impact On Athletes, Angelica Zacarola

Academic Festival

Religion is an integral part of modern society (Emmons). Whether one believes in it or not, the conversation is still happening thus influencing one’s personality. Although they are seen as larger than life, elite athletes are human as well and deal with a variety of human experiences such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, and lack of motivation. Coping with these things can be challenging and scary, as elite athletes often lack the time and attention they need for their mental health: this is where they can turn to religion. Religious athletes are proven to be more successful in mental health, success …

By Way Of Remembrance: Rural Cemeteries Of North Mississippi, David Wharton

Study the South

"My habit was to drive back roads, explore, and not worry about getting anywhere quickly or about getting lost. With my wife, Marianne, often accompanying me, we would stick to county roads, always on the lookout for places of visual interest. Among the places we frequently stopped were small towns—in both business and residential areas—and, especially, rural churches and cemeteries. Many of the churches, whether still active or not, had burial grounds close by, and even long-abandoned churches sometimes had cemeteries that showed signs of recent use. A few cemeteries were off by themselves, however, apparently forgotten by any church …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Improved agricultural management plays a vital role in protecting soils from degradation in eastern Africa. Changing practices such as reducing tillage, fertilizer use, or cover crops are expected to enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) storage, with climate change mitigation co-benefits, while increasing crop production. However, the quantification of cropland management effects on agricultural ecosystems remains inadequate in this region. Here, we explored seven management practices and their potential effects on soil carbon (C) pools, nitrogen (N) losses, and crop yields under different climate scenarios, using the dynamic vegetation model LPJ-GUESS. The model performance is evaluated against observations from two long-term …

Maximizing The Electronic Charge Carriers In Donor-Doped Hematite Under Oxygen-Rich Conditions Via Doping And Co-Doping Strategies Revealed By Density Functional Theory Calculations, Hoda El-Gibally, Shehab Shousha, Nageh K. Allam, Mostafa Youssef

Faculty Journal Articles

The low electronic conductivity of hematite (α-Fe2O3) limits its best performance in many applications. Though highly reducing conditions induce an intrinsic n-type behavior, reaching extremely low oxygen partial pressure (pO2) values is not practical. Alternatively, certain dopants provide hematite with excess electrons at practical pO2 values. This study employs density functional theory with thermodynamic analysis to compute the concentration of electronic defects in hematite as a function of pO2, upon doping with 1% of 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metals. Isothermal Kröger–Vink diagrams at 1100 K are plotted to reveal the charge compensation mechanism controlling the electronic carriers in doped …
