Permeable Curbs For Storm Water Pollution, Aldo Hernandez, Drew Johnson, Marcio Giacomoni
Permeable Curbs For Storm Water Pollution, Aldo Hernandez, Drew Johnson, Marcio Giacomoni
Data
One of the problems that increased urbanization poses is storm water pollution. Several control measures exist that are used to treat and reduce pollution in our waterways, one of those being permeable concretes; but these have not been widely adopted. The goal of this project was to develop a permeable curb apparatus that could be used in retrofitting conventional streets. The permeable curb is comprised of a permeable concrete mix with a perforated pipe running through its center, this allows for water to filter through the porous concrete and continue downstream through the perforated pipe which would eventually lead to …

The dense road networks and numerous low water crossings throughout Texas may be contributing to the higher recurrence rates of floods that pose a danger to vehicles. A timely issue that should be addressed by researchers is the compounding of disaster. Flooding can be combined with other life-threatening occurrences such as power loss and interruptions of health and emergency services. During these events, rescue requests from the stranded communities overwhelm the emergency response facilities; impassable roadways and the paucity of reliable information on the affected areas and their accessibility hamper emergency response operations, causing several detours and delays that put …

Application Of Nanodisc Technology To A Membrane-Bound P450: Functional Studies And Resonance Raman Studies On Cyp51a1, Yuanqi Jing
Dissertations (1934 -)
Membrane-bound cytochrome P450s are highly insoluble and tend to form aggregations in aqueous solution due to its hydrophobic N-terminal transmembrane anchor. The traditional methodology of studying membrane-bound proteins depends on the use of detergent; however, detergent solubilization of membrane P450s does not satisfy many criteria of biochemical and biophysical studies on membrane proteins. A well-developed Nanodisc technology has been proven to be an extraordinarily efficient method of studying membrane-bound P450s. The human sterol 14-demethylases (CYP51A1) are membrane-bound P450 enzymes that catalyze oxidative removal of the C32 methyl group of lanosterol by first forming an alcohol, then an aldehyde, and finally …

This paper charts some genealogies, challenges, and directions for experimenting with the utopic postdigital ecopedagogies demanded by our present (post)pandemic reality. These are messianic—rather than prophetic—utopias that exist not as proclamations or programmes for a distant future but as potentialities immanent in the irreducible excess of the present. While their roots most clearly emanate from the Freirean-inspired ecopedagogy movement, we conceptualize ecopedagogies instead as educational forms that emerge from, negotiate, debate, produce, resist, and/or overcome the shifting and expansive postdigital ecosystems from and to which we write and think. These are expansive ecosystems of humans, postdigital machines, nonhuman animals, minerals, …

The schizophoran superfamily Ephydroidea (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha) includes eight families, ranging from the well-known vinegar flies (Drosophilidae) and shore flies (Ephydridae), to several small, relatively unusual groups, the phylogenetic placement of which has been particularly challenging for systematists. An extraordinary diversity in life histories, feeding habits and morphology are a hallmark of fly biology, and the Ephydroidea are no exception. Extreme specialization can lead to “orphaned” taxa with no clear evidence for their phylogenetic position. To resolve relationships among a diverse sample of Ephydroidea, including the highly modified flies in the families Braulidae and Mormotomyiidae, we conducted phylogenomic sampling. Using exon …

Background: Thymol as a natural biological template can be modified chemically since the hydroxyl group makes it a candidate for structural modification. Thus, this study incorporated the triazole moiety on thymol and the chlorination of thymol moiety to help improve its biological potency. Materials and methods: A series of ten 1,2,3-triazole-thymol derivatives 1–10 were synthesized from thymol, by a click reaction between O-propargyl terminal alkyne of thymol and its chlorothymol with benzyl azide and substituted benzyl azides. Their structures were confirmed by spectroscopic methods (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, IR, GC-MS-EI/CI and LC-ESI-QTOF-MS). The Well diffusion method using Müeller-Hinton agar plates was used …

Aedes-borne viruses, yellow fever (YF), dengue, Chikungunya and Zika are taking a huge toll on global health as Africa faces re-emergence with potential for massive human catastrophe. Transmission driven by diverse vectors in ecological settings that range from urban to rural and sylvatic habitats with human and nonhuman primate/reservoir activities across such habitats has facilitated virus movement and spillover to susceptible human populations. Approved vaccine exists for YF, although availability for routine and mass vaccination is often constrained. Integrating vector surveillance, understanding disease ecology with rationalised vaccination in high-risk areas (YF) remains important in disease prevention and control. We review …

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important staple crop in Nigeria. It provides approximately 80 % of the caloric intake in Nigeria. High starch content and fresh root yields are important for the commercialization of cassava. Cassava is a perennial crop, and it can be produced all year round. However, cassava fresh root yield and starch content are strongly influenced by environmental conditions such as rainfall. Therefore, it is important to identify planting and harvest periods to attain maximum yields and starch content and to increase profitability. The present study aimed at (i) comparing changes in fresh root yields and …

The Dynamics And Role Of Gender In High-Value Avocado Farming In Kenya, Beatrice Muriithi, Jane Kabubo-Mariara
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
We used two-wave panel data obtained from avocado growers in Murang’a County in Kenya to examine, through the perspective of gender, the dynamics of farmers’ participation in avocado production and marketing organizations (PMOs), and test whether understanding group dynamics is important for analyzing contract farming. Using a multinomial logit (MNL) model, we identify the characteristics of men and women participating in PMOs categorized as early adopters, dis-adopters, late adopters, and non-adopters. We focus on dis-adopters and late adopters because these categories are most often ignored in the literature. Moreover, without considering the dynamics, we verify the influencing factors of PMOs …

Classical biological control (CBC) is considered a safer and more sustainable alternative for management of alien-invasive species. This review presents recent advances in CBC of key horticultural insect pests using parasitoids in Africa. Several CBC programs have been undertaken targeting different insect pests of both fruits and vegetables, largely yielding outstanding success. Key obstacles impeding CBC and opportunities that could promote CBC in Africa are outlined. Also, very brief highlights on recent scientific and technological advances in modeling, integrative taxonomy and molecular tools, and endosymbionts that relate to CBC are provided.

The False codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta is a major quarantine pest that hampers Capsicum production and trade in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and may need a postharvest treatment to meet quarantine standards of lucrative overseas markets. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy of hot water treatment (HWT) as a potential nonchemical quarantine control option against T. leucotreta in bell pepper and its effect on the quality parameters of the peppers. Infested bell pepper harboring different immature stages of T. leucotreta were subjected to a hot water treatment of 50 ± 0.2 °C for eight different time-points to determine heat …

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive
In assessing a popular Open Educational Resource that instructs and is shaped by students, I weigh the costs for both instructors and students in using classroom Wikipedia editing assignments. Based on experiences from before and during the Covid era, I assess the ROI in instructor time and attention, reviewing what has worked best or been a struggle for editing projects aimed at expanding linguistics stubs. Successfully launching these engaged learning tasks encompasses two areas: filling Wikipedia content gaps and building student skills. Content gap concerns include finding relevant page topics for students to work with; recognizing constraints on biography pages …

The aim of this article is to engage in a critical comparison of the legal regimes that the United States and India use to implement and enforce their competition laws. In Part I, the author describes the U.S. institutions that play major roles in implementing and enforcing competition law, including their powers, their staffing, and the procedures they use to announce policies and to adjudicate disputes. In Part II, the author seeks to critically evaluate the working of competition law in the United States. In Part III, the author describes the Indian institutions that implement and enforce competition law, including …
Consumer Internet Standard Form Contracts In India: A Proposal, Robert A. Hillman
Consumer Internet Standard Form Contracts In India: A Proposal, Robert A. Hillman
National Law School of India Review
India's burgeoning Internet commerce sector has made consumers susceptible to standard-form contracts. Due to the slim likelihood of consumers reading the terms, vendors may often draft heavy-handed terms in the contracts, thereby adversely impacting consumer interests. The Indian legal framework in this regard is inadequate. This article evaluates the existing suggestions on standard-form contracts and argues that none of them safeguard consumer interests sufficiently. Instead, based on the American Law Institutes' Principles of the Law of Software Contracts, the article proposes a disclosure approach that would benefit the interests of Indian consumers engaged in commerce on the internet.
Penal Code Defences: Lessons From Sri Lanka, Stanley Yeo
Penal Code Defences: Lessons From Sri Lanka, Stanley Yeo
National Law School of India Review
This article discusses a selection of cases from Sri Lanka that have dealt with certain defences under the Indian Penal Code. The defences that will be covered are private defence, consent and necessity, automatism and insanity, intoxication, provocation, and sudden fight. An analysis of cases sheds light on problems in these defence provisions. Practitioners and students of criminal law in India and elsewhere would benefit significantly from studying the solutions to these problems developed by the Sri Lankan courts. Where these solutions are inadequate, the author suggests alternative solutions including legislative reform.

What Would An Ambedkarite Jurisprudence Look Like, Aravind Narain
National Law School of India Review
Dr. Ambedkar is famously known as the father of the Indian Constitution. This article goes beyond this epithet and explores Ambedkar's jurisprudential contributions to Indian law. The article argues that Ambedkar saw the rules of caste as law and in the state's legal intervention to combat caste-based discrimination articulated the importance of both norm creation and having a procedure for enforcement-ideas that continue to influence law-making till date. Further, the article identifies "fraternity" and "constitutional morality" from the Ambedkarite corpus as key legal concepts, and stresses upon their relevance in finding solutions to problems that India faces today
