NRM Departmental Data Sets

We sampled 1,225 bobcats harvested in South Dakota, USA, (2014–2019) and used 17 microsatellite loci to assess genetic diversity and infer population genetic structure. We assigned individuals to genetic clusters (K) using spatial and nonspatial Bayesian clustering algorithms, and quantified differentiation among clusters. We found support for population genetic structure at K = 2 and K = 4, with weak to moderate differentiation among clusters.

International Conflicts And Conflict Resolution: Periscoping The Role Of The United Nations, Chinyere Ecoma, Ejitu Ota Jan 2023

International Conflicts And Conflict Resolution: Periscoping The Role Of The United Nations, Chinyere Ecoma, Ejitu Ota

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

It is the contention of realist scholars and thinkers that states in the international system have a natural inclination or proclivity to war. This position is anchored on their belief that the world is inherently anarchic and that, therefore, it is in the interest of states in the international system to be prepared at all times to defend themselves. Relying on the historical-descriptive methodology of content analysis, this paper argues that though conflicts are inevitable in international relations, the international community has put in place certain mechanisms to avoid the occurrence of violent and destructive inter-state conflicts in order to …

Transportation Curriculum With Culturally Responsive Teaching: Lessons Learned From Pre-Service Teachers And Future Transportation Workforce, Farah Naz, Troyee Saha, Kyung (Kate) Hyun

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

With K-12 students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds in the classroom today, it is crucial to develop a more inclusive and socially diverse curriculum, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) topics. Transportation in particular is a topic that can relate to people's culture and can be a suitable medium to introduce diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. Culturally responsive teaching (CRT) is a technique that can help connect students' cultures, languages, and life experiences with their learning. Despite the known benefits of CRT, this strategy had not been adequately implemented in transportation education because of the limited …

Westerners, Western Power And Polish Society In The Mid-Twentieth Century: The Poznan International Trade Fair As A Complex Frontier, Patryk Babiracki

Cambridge University Press Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Drawing on Polish, US, French, British and German archival documents, this article examines the encounters between Western and Polish participants at the International Trade Fair in the Polish city of Poznań in the 1950s and 1960s. Challenging the predominant Cold War framework, it shows that Westerners who came to Poznań drew on power and privilege while pursuing personal interests. Consequently, the author both highlights the self-indulgence of the well-known story about the largely emancipatory motivations of Westerners who became involved with Eastern European affairs in the second half of the twentieth century and demonstrates that the resulting patterns of interactions …

"Defund" Or "Refund" The Police?: City Council Responsiveness To The Black Lives Matter Protests, Bai Linh Hoang, Andrea Benjamin Jan 2023

"Defund" Or "Refund" The Police?: City Council Responsiveness To The Black Lives Matter Protests, Bai Linh Hoang, Andrea Benjamin

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

In this research note, we investigate the degree to which local governments reduced or expanded the budgets of police departments in the aftermath of the nation-wide protests organized by the Black Lives Matter movement during the summer of 2020. We also consider the political and social factors that might explain local councils' decisions on the budget. In analyzing an original dataset of about 100 of the most populous U.S. cities, we do not find strong evidence of government efforts to "defund" the police. However, across various specifications of potential responsiveness to the movement's demands, we do find that mayoral partisanship …

The Role Of Culture In The Justification And Perpetuation Of Domestic Violence: The Perspectives Of Service Providers In Kyrgyzstan, Saltanat Childress, Nibedita Shrestha, Kanykei Kenensarieva, Jildyz Urbaeva, Rachel Voth Schrag

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

The study explores the perspectives of service providers on cultural and social reasons used to justify domestic violence in Kyrgyzstan. Results indicate that cultural norms, notably patriarchal customs, immense pressure put on women to save the marriage, stigma of divorce, low status assigned to women, wide acceptance of violence as natural, and fear of retaliation were major reasons that perpetuated domestic violence. Scholars, policymakers, and service providers must collaborate to actively dispel widely accepted beliefs about gender, marriage, and women's status, and to break the cycle of abuse providing help at the individual and community levels.

The "Police Personality": Is It Real?, Michael F. Teneyck Jan 2023

The "Police Personality": Is It Real?, Michael F. Teneyck

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Much research has discussed the "police personality." Yet, it is still unclear what particular traits make up the police personality—or whether it exists at all. This can be partially attributed to the limited availability of data collected within individual police departments. Using a nationally representative sample of adults (Add Health), the current study examines whether the Big Five personality traits, temperamental characteristics, and empirically informed covariates are related to being a police officer. Results indicate that, compared to the general population, individuals in law enforcement score significantly lower on openness to experience. Police officers are also more likely than non-officers …

What happens when “frontline” workers are patients and family members performing health-related tasks? As more and more complex healthcare tasks are performed by patients and family members, and more emphasis is placed on patient- and family-centered care, strategies are needed to engage patients and family members in co-design "work systems" and patient-professional collaborative work. Human factors professionals are well-equipped to apply participatory ergonomics to patient and collaborative tasks. However, there are a number of barriers and pitfalls in engaging patients in design. Moving from tokenism to meaningful engagement in research requires patience, constant reflection, and a commitment to codesign. Our …

The Sexual And Gender-Based Violence Epidemic Meets The Covid-19 Pandemic: Survivors’ And Advocates’ Narratives In Egypt, Mozn Hassan, Helen Rizzo

Faculty Journal Articles

This research traces activism over the last 30 years against sexual and gender-based violence with a focus on survivors’ and advocates’ narratives in Egypt. We argue that several focusing events in Egypt and the support of transnational advocacy networks over the last decades have galvanised the efforts of activists and citizens of good will to mobilise around these issues. Egyptian feminist mobilisation during the pandemic brought to the public sphere the untold stories of the forms of violence that occurred through online and social media platforms. While social media and other online tools hold the promise of becoming “a new …

Effect Of Freeze Thaw Cycles On Elbow Mobility In A Long Evans Rat, Sophia Miller

Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Independent Study

Throughout the 2022 Fall semester I worked in Dr. Lake’s musculoskeletal soft tissue lab on the Post Traumatic Joint Contracture(PTJC) project. Previous work on this project used a rat model of the elbow to explore different factors affecting this disease and potential treatments. There are many different tests used to quantify the rats progress through this condition. One is range of motion testing. The typical procedure for this project is to sacrifice the animals and then freeze them before performing range of motion testing. This project tested the animals range of motion immediately after sacrifice and then again after the …

Dataset For Whitewater Sound Dependence On Discharge And Wave Configuration At An Adjustable Wave Feature, Taylor Tatum, Jacob Anderson Dec 2022

Dataset For Whitewater Sound Dependence On Discharge And Wave Configuration At An Adjustable Wave Feature, Taylor Tatum, Jacob Anderson

Boise State University Infrasound Data Repository

Stream acoustics has been proposed as a means of monitoring discharge and wave hazards from outside the stream channel. In order to better understand the dependence of sound on discharge and wave characteristics, this study analyzes discharge and infrasound data from an artificial wave feature. This feature, known as Boise Whitewater Park, is adjusted to accommodate daily changes in recreational use and seasonal changes in irrigation demand. Significant sound is only observed when discharge exceeds ~35 m^3/s, and even above that threshold the sound-discharge relationship is non-linear and inconsistent. When sound is observed, it shows consistent dependence on wave type …

The Moralist International: Russia In The Global Culture Wars, Kristina Stoeckl, Dmitry Uzlaner

Politics

The Moralist International analyzes the role of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Russian state in the global culture wars over gender and reproductive rights and religious freedom. It shows how the Russian Orthodox Church in the past thirty years first acquired knowledge about the dynamics, issues, and strategies of Right- Wing Christian groups; how the Moscow Patriarchate has shaped its traditionalist agenda accordingly; and how the close alliance between church and state has turned Russia into a norm entrepreneur for international moral conservativism. Including detailed case studies of the World Congress of Families, anti-abortion activism, and the global homeschooling …

Dataset For Infrasound Early Warning Detections For Lahars, Jeffrey B. Johnson, Amilcar Roca, Gustavo Bejar, Gregory P. Waite

Boise State University Infrasound Data Repository

Infrasound may be used to detect the approach of hazardous volcanic mudflows, known as lahars, tens of minutes before they arrive at a downstream monitoring station. We have analyzed signals from more than 20 secondary lahars caused by precipitation events at Fuego Volcano during Guatemala’s rainy season in May through October of 2022. We are able to quantify the capabilities of infrasound monitoring through comparison with seismic data, time lapse video footage, and high-resolution video of an event occurring on 17 August 2022. We determine that infrasound sensors, deployed adjacent to the lahar path and in small-aperture (10s of meters) …

Learning outcomes can only be achieved through using case-based pedagogy. Instructors must encourage students to dive deeply into the case dilemma, so they are able to engage with the case objectives and questions, applying the appropriate theory. By doing so, students can provide solutions based on five core objectives. These are the objectives that students should learn after completing the case discussion
