For The Dissertation: A Classification Of Tensors In Ecsk Theory, Joshua James Leiter, Charles G. Torre Apr 2023

For The Dissertation: A Classification Of Tensors In Ecsk Theory, Joshua James Leiter, Charles G. Torre

Physics Student Research

This dissertation presents a Petrov/Plebanski/Segre/Algebraic (PPSA) classification scheme for both the curvature and torsion tensors in Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory (ECSK); additionally the work includes a software package in Maple with computational and PPSA classification tools. Six different solutions are classified using the new software tools developed. We also present a new boundary term for ECSK-NMC scalar theory to ensure Dirichlet boundary conditions. New work completed includes the decomposition of an arbitrary 4th rank tensor under SO (p, q), equivalent SL (2, C) irreducible spinor decompositions of arbitrary 3rd and 4th rank tensors. We provide new proofs that the corresponding spinors are …

Ganciclovir (GCV) has been shown to be an effective antiviral for the treatment of congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) induced sensorineural hearing loss. However, dose-dependent adverse effects (e.g. neutropenia) require strict, burdensome monitoring, limiting GCV use in some patients. Quercetin is a flavonoid with antioxidant properties that has demonstrated antiviral therapy against CMV. Although more benign than GCV, quercetin has limited therapeutic value due to its poor solubility. We previously reported that GCV improves hearing thresholds in a murine model of cCMV. We also noted that solubilizing quercetin with poloxamer 188 (P188) and combining with GCV therapy amplified CMV inhibition in murine …

Metabolism And Decomposition Rates From 5 Lake Superior Tributaries, 2018-2019, Renn Schipper, Michelle Kelly, Amy Marcarelli

Michigan Tech Research Data

Ecosystem respiration (ER), and decomposition are fundamental processes driving carbon cycling in streams. Most studies examine rates of autotrophic respiration (AR) and heterotrophic respiration (HR) together as ecosystem respiration (ER), even though these two processes are carried out by different groups of organisms, and these processes, alongside decomposition, may respond differently to ongoing changes in environmental factors. We measured metabolism (gross primary production and ER) and decomposition at eight sites in four streams in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan across gradients of canopy cover and DOC concentrations. We estimated AR and HR using quantile regression and used predictive modeling to …

Effects Of Pregnancy And Progesterone On Atrial Fibrillation, Heloisa M. Rutigliano Apr 2023

Effects Of Pregnancy And Progesterone On Atrial Fibrillation, Heloisa M. Rutigliano

Browse all Datasets

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrythmia in adults with likely sex-specific risk factors. Female sex hormones may be important in modulating risk for atrial fibrillation. We hypothesize that pregnancy and progesterone (P4), a hormone found in high levels during pregnancy with abrupt withdrawal immediately after parturition, modulates AF susceptibility in female goats. Cardiac specific TGF-?1 transgenic female goats and age-matched wild-type (WT) female goats were utilized. Pacemakers were implanted in all animals for continuous arrhythmia monitoring and AF inducibility. AF inducibility was evaluated using 5 separate 10 s bursts of atrial pacing (160 - 200 ms). In …

Water temperature is a critical ecological indicator; however, few studies have statistically modeled century-scale trends in riverine or estuarine water temperature, or their cause. Here, we recover, digitize, and analyze archival temperature measurements from the 1850s onward to investigate how and why water temperatures in the lower Columbia River are changing. To infill data gaps and explore changes, we develop regression models of daily historical Columbia River water temperature using time-lagged river flow and air temperature as the independent variables. Models were developed for 3 time periods (mid-19 th , mid-20 th , and early 21 st century), using archival …

Controlling Epidemic Extinction Using Early Warning Signals, Walter Ullon, Eric Forgoston Apr 2023

Controlling Epidemic Extinction Using Early Warning Signals, Walter Ullon, Eric Forgoston

School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As the recent COVID-19 pandemic has shown us, there is a critical need to develop new approaches to monitoring the outbreak and spread of infectious disease. Improvements in monitoring will enable a timely implementation of control measures, including vaccine and quarantine, to stem the spread of disease. One such approach involves the use of early warning signals to detect when critical transitions are about to occur. Although the early detection of a stochastic transition is difficult to predict using the generic indicators of early warning signals theory, the changes detected by the indicators do tell us that some type of …

Modulatory Roles Of Human Adenovirus Type 3 In Extracellular Vesicle Development, Trafficking, And Inhibition, Ayodeji Oludare Ipinmoroti

Dissertations

Respiratory human adenovirus (HAdV) has been closely linked with acute respiratory infections such as pharyngitis and coryza (common cold). While some HAdV serotypes antagonize the immune system leading to meningitis, gastroenteritis, and acute hemorrhagic cystitis among other conditions, HAdV type 3 (HAdV3) predominantly infects the upper respiratory tract. Studies have shown that the release of small, membrane-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs), termed exosomes, may offer a mechanism by which certain viruses, enter cells via receptor-independent entry. EVs play a major role in both cellular homeostasis and intercellular communication under both healthy and pathological conditions. Firstly, in this study, we demonstrated that …

Mechanics And Experience In Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare: Opportunities For Civic Empathy, Taylor Milan Kessner, Luis Perez Cortes

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Background: Videogames are widely considered effective learning environments, with powerful lessons relevant to those who design teaching and learning experiences. Violent videogames, however, are often left out of such conversations. Intervention: In this context, we examine Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (MW) as a violent videogame that might suggest design principles useful for effecting emotional experiences, a key element to the formation of memories and therefore learning. Methods: Through narrative description of two missions from MW and interleaved discussion of its mechanics, we contend even violent videogames might inform the design of interactive learning experiences.

Dataset For Exciton Delocalization And Scaffold Stability In Bridged Nucleotide-Substituted, Dna Duplex-Templated Cyanine Aggregates, Simon K. Roy, William B. Knowlton

Quantum DNA Research Group Data

Molecular excitons play a foundational role in chromophore aggregates found in light-harvesting systems and offer potential applications in engineered excitonic systems. Controlled aggregation of chromophores to promote exciton delocalization has been achieved by covalently tethering chromophores to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) scaffolds. Although many studies have documented changes in the optical properties of chromophores upon aggregation using DNA scaffolds, more limited work has investigated how structural modifications of DNA via bridged nucleotides and chromophore covalent attachment impact scaffold stability as well as the configuration and optical behavior of attached aggregates. Here we investigated the impact of two types of bridged nucleotides, …

Disability And Caste Bias: A Shared Struggle, Sanjay Jain Mar 2023

Disability And Caste Bias: A Shared Struggle, Sanjay Jain

Popular Media

This article makes a case for the commingling of caste and disability issues to make social justice movements more inclusive. According to the author, “Anchoring the identities of caste and gender with disability helps to comprehend different shades of vulnerability…. The need of the hour is to have an inclusive and progressive coalition of the Dalits and Disabled activists to raise a clamour for de-essentialisation of medicalisation of disability and have compassion and unflinching empathy for the needs of one another.”
