Background

Dietary intake during early childhood can have implications on child health and developmental trajectories. Early childhood education and care (ECEC) services are recommended settings to deliver healthy eating interventions as they provide access to many children during this important period. Healthy eating interventions delivered in ECEC settings can include strategies targeting the curriculum (e.g. nutrition education), ethos and environment (e.g. menu modification) and partnerships (e.g. workshops for families). Despite guidelines supporting the delivery of healthy eating interventions in this setting, little is known about their impact on child health.

Background/study objective: The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic affected health care delivery, as it led to variable outcomes in different disease states including cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we evaluated the impact of coexisting COVID-19 on Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). Design/setting: We analyzed discharge records of AMI patients from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) in the year 2020.

Main outcome measures: Using propensity score matching, we assessed the impact of COVID-19 infection on the in-hospital outcomes of patients presenting with AMI.

There have been few studies examining trajectories of functional decline among older adults in the United States using large representative databases. The purpose of this study was to describe the mean trajectory of functional decline for a representative sample of US older adults, to determine the optimal number of latent classes within that sample, and to identify key differences between the classes on select variables. Snow surface albedo is a crucial component to the energy balance of our seasonal snowpack on planet Earth, reflecting most of the incoming solar radiation, and maintaining cool snow surface temperatures. It is therefore important for us to understand the spatial and temporal distributions of snow properties. Snow albedo can be estimated from satellite remote sensing, however, pixels from images often contain other surfaces (i.e., mixed pixels). For on-chip SRAM, a major portion of delay and energy is contributed by the H-Tree interconnects. In this paper, we propose an E-Tree interconnect technology to minimize the H-Tree delay and energy overheads based on an efficient interconnect technology/memory co-design framework for nonuniform workloads. Various array- and interconnect-level design parameters are co-designed for optimal performance using three emerging interconnect materials with a realistic cell library.

Water vapor supersaturation in clouds is a random variable that drives activation and growth of cloud droplets. The Pi Convection-Cloud Chamber generates a turbulent cloud with a microphysical steady-state that can be varied from clean to polluted by adjusting the aerosol injection rate. The supersaturation distribution and its moments, e.g., mean and variance, are investigated for varying cloud microphysical conditions. High-speed and co-located Eulerian measurements of temperature and water vapor concentration are combined to obtain the temporally resolved supersaturation distribution. This allows quantification of the contributions of variances and covariances between water vapor and temperature. Results are consistent with expectations …

Winter Storm Uri was an extreme disaster that impacted much of the United States during February of 2021. Texas and Oklahoma were generally not prepared for such an event and experienced massive power grid failures. This led to cascading risks including water system disruptions and many boil water notices (BWNs). The breakdown of some communication channels and the inability to enact protective actions due to power outages, as well as travel limitations on public roads, complicated both dissemination and implementation. We present a theoretical study on the energy dispersion of an ultrathin film of periodically-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with the help of the Bogoliubov–Valatin transformation. The Hamiltonian of the film was derived using the many-particle green function technique in the Matsubara frequency formalism. The periodic array of SWCNTs was embedded in a dielectric with comparatively higher permittivity than the substrate and the superstrate such that the SWCNT film became independent with the axis of quantization but keeps the thickness as the variable parameter, making the film neither two-dimensional nor three-dimensional, but transdimensional. For this project I created a fictitious curly hair brand named Twirl. Twirl’s mission is to make curly hair care fun and easy. I started by making a logo and creating branding guidelines. Next I designed some labels and put them on packaging mockups. I wanted this project to have a UX/UI element so I made a landing page wireframe and then converted it into a mockup that incorporated the branding guidelines and packaging mockup. Throughout the design process I kept the brand’s mission in mind, and prioritized the user’s experience with the products and website.

Having viable alternative transportation options could help individuals stop driving when appropriate. This study employs the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) to understand the barriers and facilitators of alternative transportation among a sample of adults aged 55 and older (N = 32). Using a daily transportation data collection app, MyAmble, the research team asked participants questions structured around environmental, individual, and behavioral factors as outlined in the SCT framework. Responses were analyzed using directed content analysis. The (G4C2)n nucleotide repeat expansion (NRE) mutation in C9orf72 is the most common genetic cause of ALS and FTD. The biological functions of C9orf72 are becoming understood, but it is unclear if this gene is regulated in a neural-specific manner. Neuronal activity is a crucial modifier of biological processes in health and neurodegenerative disease contexts. Here, we show that prolonged membrane depolarization in healthy human iPSC-cortical neurons leads to a significant downregulation of a transcript variant 3 (V3) of C9orf72, with a concomitant increase in variant 2 (V2), which leads to total C9orf72 RNA transcript levels remaining unchanged. Purpose: Blindness is a well-known complication of filler injection in the glabellar region. Acute diplopia from filler injection without vision loss is a rare complication that typically results in clinical ophthalmoplegia which can have permanent sequelae. Here, we describe a patient who presented with acute diplopia with grossly intact full extraocular motility after glabella hyaluronic acid filler injection that resolved after 1 month.

Observations: A previously healthy 43-year-old woman underwent her first hyaluronic acid injection in the glabella and developed immediate binocular double vision with severe pain and skin mottling above her right eyebrow and central forehead. Hyaluronidase injections, nitroglycerin …

The article highlights the “sense of history through which our everyday life is made possible, considering that the historical imagination is accessed all the time even though most people do not study history in university or go on to become professional historians.” In doing so, the article offers evidence of Indian syncretic culture, which comes from various sources, including contemporary history.
