In this case study, through an autoethnographic service journey, we investigate the process of applying for asylum in Norway. This paper assesses the value and limitations of a two-year community-engaged design thinking initiative across one county in the southeast United States. Initiative goals were to foster the design of more inclusive and holistic public health community-based services with underserved communities, institutionalize and socialize community-based design within a public health framework, and build organizational and individual capacities. Findings indicate the acquired design thinking processes transformed mental models, fostered new relationships, and built skills. Although a picture, GIF, or tutorial video is "worth a thousand words", every viewer has a unique perspective of which words they ‘see.’ Packed with rich meaning, these words, or descriptions, are often used to describe the ambiguity of working with materials, artifacts, and processes in creative practices. Our work reframes the traditional crowdsourced description tasks to leverage crowdworker diversity in generating a corpus of tacit descriptions. Background: Concern about weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation, but determinants of post-cessation weight concern have not been adequately evaluated in the context of community-based cessation programs. Methods: Baseline data were analyzed from a cessation trial of 392 adults randomized to physical activity (PA) or general wellness counseling as adjunctive treatment for cigarette smoking. Outcomes were 1) Use of smoking to control weight (“control”) and 2) Willingness to tolerate weight gain without returning to smoking (“intolerance”) using validated instruments. The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil drilling rig on April 20 of 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in an uncontrolled oil spill from 5000 feet below the sea surface, requiring an extraordinarily rapid response. A decade ago, the technology to model oil spills from the deep ocean did not exist. A few oil models are now capable of forecasting the 3D transport and fate of the oil from such blowout. High-resolution backscatter and bathymetric maps created by multibeam sonar surveys were used to identify different seafloor bottom types within existing, potentially expanded, and newly proposed reef areas in New York waters. Existing sites included Smithtown in Long Island Sound (LIS), and Rockaway, Atlantic Beach, Hempstead, Yellowbar, Kismet, Fire Island, Twelve Mile along the South Shore. Potential expansions are proposed on the South Shore for McAllister, Moriches, and Shinnecock reefs in addition to a new site called Sixteen Fathom. Intertidal reefs of Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster) provide ecologically valuable habitat in estuaries along the Atlantic coast of North America. In Mosquito Lagoon, a shallow-water estuary on the east coast of central Florida, USA, historical aerial imagery was used to document a 24% decline in the live C. virginica reef area between 1943 and 2009. Using 2021 imagery, every living and dead reef in the same region was manually digitized to identify changes during the intervening 12 years. Positive impacts of C. virginica reef restoration that took place between 2007 and 2021 were also digitized to quantify long-term restoration impact. …

This paper describes a novel shared control teleoperation framework for mobile robots that utilizes Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) as filtering mechanism to prevent a human operator from making dangerous actions. The proposed framework demonstrates the potential to create a CBF controller that enables users with no prior knowledge of robotics to safely tele-navigate mobile robots with limited situational awareness.
