The Dystrophinopathies: An Alternative To The Structural Hypothesis, C. George Carlson

Abnormal expression of the cytoskeletal protein dystrophin has deleterious consequences for skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, and the central nervous system. A complete failure to express the protein produces Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), in which there is extensive and progressive skeletal muscle necrosis, the development of a life-threatening dilated cardiomyopathy, and mild mental retardation. Dystrophin binds the F-actin cytoskeleton and is normally expressed in a complex of transmembrane proteins (the 'dystrophin protein complex') that interact with external components of the basal lamina. One pathogenic model for DMD (the 'structural hypothesis') suggests that this complex forms a structural bridge between the external …

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 1998.

The concept of negotiability of promissory notes is solidly entrenched in American commercial law. It derives from the English common law notion that a negotiable instrument is a reification of the obligation it describes; the instrument is regarded as a tangible form of the obligation. This notion has multiple ramifications, but three stand out. The first is the holder in due course doctrine which asserts that, when a negotiable instrument is transferred by the correct process (negotiation, which requires delivery of the paper) to someone with the right qualities (good faith, lack of notice, and payment of value), the maker …

Tadić, The Anonymous Witness And The Sources Of International Procedural Law, Natasha A. Affolder

This article explores the Trial Chamber's decision to allow the use of anonymous testimony as a protective measure in the wake of the final judgment in the Tadić trial. This initial decision, granting the prosecutor's request for protective measures including the withholding of four witnesses' identities from the accused, formed a precedent upon which later rulings for protective measures relied, both throughout the Tadić case and in subsequent cases before the International Tribunal.

The response of the lady beetle Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) to the density of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), was measured in petri dish arenas as well as on plants with divergent leaf architectures. Logistic regression was used to distinguish the shape of the functional response (type II or III), and nonlinear least-squares regression was used to estimate attack coefficients (a) and handling times (Th). In dishes, the behavior of both beetle larvae and adults closely conformed to a type II response. Estimates of a and Th on whole plants were considerably different from those obtained from dishes, and …

An electrophoretic comparison of variation at 32 isozyme loci was performed for 122 Vigna vexillata and 3 V. lobatifolia accessions. The results do not fit the present delimitation of taxa. According to the results obtained during this study, Vigna lobatifolia could be included within V. vexillata, and both Asian and West African taxa could deserve a subspecific rank within V. vexillata. Considering only Africa, some similarities between the organization of the gene pools of V. vexillata and V. unguiculata have been found.

The best position for Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, GA) light traps, in relation to human-occupied bed nets for trapping of host-seeking Anopheles gambiae Giles and Culex quinquefasciatus Say mosquitoes, was determined in Tanzania. Significantly higher catches were recorded for both species when the trap was positioned at the foot end of the bed, near the top of the net. Parity rates were significantly higher near the top of the net than at the level of the host. Since trap position affects the catch size and the proportion of infectious mosquitoes therein, standardized use of this sampling technique for estimating …

S2 line and S2 test-cross recurrent selection procedures were initiated to improve the resistance of a maize (Zen mays L.) population to the spotted stemborer, Chllo partclltis (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). Thirty-five selections developed from the population were evaluated for resistance to the stemborer in western Kenya. Resistance was rated according to leaf feeding (LF), stem tunnelling (ST) and deadheart formation (DH) following artificial infestation with first-instar C. pnrtcUus. Larval establishment and growth were also assessed. The reduction in foliar damage ratings, percentage stem length tunnelled, and percentage of plants showing deadheart after one cycle of recurrent selection were 4.38 %, …

The production of vegetables in many parts of Africa is basically a small-holder entreprise. However, knowledge on and the use of IPM is scanty. Inadequate IPM awareness among policy makers and donor agencies has resulted to the lack of national IPM policies. Historically, research and extension has concentrated on staples to the comparative neglect of vegetables despite being important component of daily dietary intake and source of income for small-holders. Current research and extension, which is primarily donor-driven, is focused on a few selected crops and problems, and is not necessarily addressing the real needs of the producers and local …
