Beauty And Believability In Sexual Harassment Cases: Does Physical Attractiveness Affect Perceptions Of Veracity And The Likelihood Of Being Harassed?, John S. Seiter, Deborah Dunn

This study explored whether a female student's level of attractiveness affects the degree to which she is believed when making a claim of sexual harassment, and whether attractiveness is related to perceptions of how likely it is that she will be sexually harassed. Participants viewed one of three photographs of a female model who was made to appear a) unattractive, b) attractive and pristine, or c) attractive but not pristine. Afterwards they read a case file in which the photographed model claimed to have been sexually harassed by one of her professors. Finally, participants rated the photographed model's veracity and …

The Cumulative Effects Of Justice Perceptions, Jeffrey A. Miles, Stefanie E. Naumann

We report some evidence that justice perceptions may be cumulative, or act together to bolster or undermine other perceptions. In several instances, procedural and distributive justice perceptions about one procedure were different for those reading about only one procedure and outcome versus those who read about that situation and a second situation. Evidence was also found that individuals may average justice perceptions together for two procedures when forming overall fairness and satisfaction perceptions.

A Case For Procedural Justice Climate: Development And Test Of A Multilevel Model, Stefanie E. Naumann, Nathan Bennett

Current conceptualizations of procedural justice focus largely on the individual level of analysis; no framework exists for examining procedural justice's social context. Empirical tests reported here offer some support for group-level and cross-level hypotheses. Work group perceptions of cohesion and supervisor visibility in demonstrating procedural justice were associated with the development of procedural justice climate. Procedural justice climate was positively associated with helping behaviors after the effects of individual procedural justice perceptions were controlled for.

The GTECH project, funded through a grant from the GTE Foundation, prepared school teams of science, mathematics and technology teachers and an administrator to set goals for their local schools regarding implementation of electronic technology and integration of content across curricular areas. A variety of teacher-centered staff development strategies were used to enable participants to achieve local school objectives, model and encourage active learning environments involving technology, develop integrated curriculum and provide training to their peers. GTECH staff provided workshops and summer institutes based on teacher feedback and classroom observations. Data from the Stages of Concerns Questionnaire assisted the staff …

Communities Of Practice: A Framework For Fostering Coherence In Virtual Learning Communities, Jim Rogers

This paper presents a case study of an on-line workshop that was conducted via the WWW. Using the participant dialogues from the workshop bulletin boards, the author investigates whether Wenger’s (1998) Community of Practice framework can be applied to this educational setting. The results indicate that participants interactions in the workshop demonstrated the characteristics of mutual engagement, joint enterprise, and shared repertoire. These three characteristics are what Wenger posits contribute to a cohesive community of practice. Using this framework, some principles are derived that educators can use to design more cohesive learning communities.

Librarians at four academic institutions present their experiences using four courseware products (Web Course in a Box, Blackboard, eCollege.com, and WebCT) to teach information literatcy skills. Objectives, methods, content, and student populations vary from place to place. In all four cases, with some reservations, librarians deem courseware a valuable tool for delivery of library instruction. They agree on the following primary advantages: support for interactivity; support for assessment/grade management; support for distance education; relatively quick development time; relatively low technical skill requirement; and raise the following concerns; inability to integrate quiz questions into the text of lessons; and diminution of …

The Bay Study Group was created by the City of Tampa in 1976 to monitor the effects of pollution abatement that occurred in Hillsborough Bay when the city’s wastewater treatment plant was upgraded from primary to advanced treatment in 1979. The Bay Study Group documented a remarkable restoration of water quality parameters and biological indicators in Hillsborough Bay from the mid 1980s until 2009, when it was disbanded. This zip Geodatabase file contains the photo point locations, aerial photos, and flight maps for the year 2000.

This article describes a set of informal activities engaged in by Mexican immigrants in a poor district of San Jose, California. Based on ethnographic field research, the study posits that the informal economy in Mexican immigrant communities does not constitute a labor niche of subsistence activities for workers excluded from the formal sector, or a set of jobs generated by an ethnic economy. On the contrary, it serves as a complement to the income generated by unqualified work in the formal sector, in which most workers are inserted, while in other cases, it represents an advantageous alternative form of work. …

Using qualitative analysis and a Bourdieuian framework, authors investigated perceptions held by southern California African American and Latino high school students and their counselors regarding community colleges. Community colleges were found to be ambiguous assets, used by some students to enhance academic qualifications, but viewed by others as institutions of last resort.

Pope’s ‘Suidas’ is not a man but a work, The Suda (or Stronghold): a massive 10^th century Byzantine Greek historical encyclopedia of the ancient Mediterranean world, covering the whole of Greek and Roman antiquity and also including Biblical and Christian material.

Preserved in several medieval manuscripts, it has been edited and published several times since the end of the 14th century in traditional hard-copy scholarly editions, most recently that of Ada Adler (Teubner, 5 volumes: 1928-1938, reprinted 1971).
