Determination Of Wax Concentration In Sunflower-Seed Oil, Silvana Martini, M.C. Anon

Isothermal crystallization of waxes was studied by using an optical setup. The induction time of crystallization was assessed as a function of wax concentration. The relationship was found to be a decreasing exponential curve. The wax content of some of the solutions prepared in the laboratory was determined by calculating the crystallization induction time. The values obtained were compared to those from different methods (cold test, microscopic, and turbidimetric methods). The results obtained with the optical setup method are similar to those obtained with other methods for concentrations greater than 100 ppm. An analysis of variance test was used to …

As limited fresh-water supplies, particularly in arid regions, meet increased urban demand for water, landscape water conservation will become more important. A variety of methods to conserve water and/or moderate demand are available to water managers and consumers. Precision landscape irrigation can moderated demand to levels needed to meet plant and system uniformity needs. Precision-irrigated turf landscapes still consume large amounts of water. The value of extensive turfgrass in golf courses, formal gardens, and recreational fields can often offset the cost of water. Every two years, candidates for national-level public office participate in pre-election debates as part of their campaign. In debates, candidates attempt to distinguish themselves from their opponents and persuade the electorate to vote for them. Many researchers claim that debates are simple candidate performances orchestrated by the media, and discount the candidates' discourse as rehearsed sound bites and the candidates' interactions are simply “politics as usual.” The sense of being normal is what invites us to study the discourse that occurs in a situation imbued with the presentation of legitimated political power between individuals who seek legislative power. This study focuses on native English-speaking business professors to explore issues of stereotyping and error gravity in terms of university ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Specifically, this dissertation has four goals: (1) to discover what types of judgments business professors make about students, (2) to determine whether they make judgments about students based on written language samples, (3) to discover whether these judgments vary according to various grammatical error types in written language samples (whether an error hierarchy obtains for written grammatical errors), and (4) to explore what linguistic variables might influence those judgments. As mechanical product designs become more complex, integrating electromechanical components with embedded control circuitry, the need for engineering graduates with a diversified educational background in multidisciplinary applications has been recognized within many facets of industry. The focus of this research was to create a series of laboratory experiments and a capstone project based on a survey of literature from current educators that could be used to introduce sophomore-level mechanical engineering students to fundamentals in the field known as "mechatronics", which incorporates the traditional disciplines of mechanical, electrical and software engineering. Novel Palladium-Catalyzed Synthesis Of 3-Substituted Indoles And Its Application Toward The Total Synthesis Of Indolactam V, Michael Robert Turner

A novel synthesis of indoles having electron withdrawing substituents in the 3-position has been developed. Various 2-nitrostyrenes were prepared via Stille coupling of 2-tributyl stannyl-2-propenoic acid ethyl ester with substituted 2-bromo-l-nitrobenzenes. Alternatively, sequential vicarious nucleophilic substitution of substituted nitrobenzenes and Knoevenagel condensation with formaldehyde was used to prepare 2-nitrostyrenes. Palladium catalyzed N-heteroannulation of 2-nitrostyrenes yielded indoles in 61--99%. For example, reaction of a 0.5 M solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl 2-(1-nitro-2-napthyl)propenoate (65) in N,N-dimethylformamide with carbon monoxide (4 atm), in the presence of a catalytic amount of bis(dibenzylideneacetone)palladium(0) (6 mol %), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (6 mol %), and 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate (12 mol %), gave …

The Allegheny woodrat occurs throughout the Appalachian Mountains, where it forms isolated colonies in rock outcrops, cliffs, and caves. Populations along the northern and western peripheries of the range have experienced drastic declines in the past 20--30 years. A paucity of ecological information is available for this species, particularly regarding the effects of anthropogenic disturbance. Furthermore, no information is available on population structure, gene flow, or relatedness among colonies. Gas exchange and growth of transplanted and nontransplanted, field-grown Norway maple (Acer platanoides L. `Schwedleri') and littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata Mill. `Greenspire') trees were investigated in an arid climate. In the spring of 1995, three trees of each species were moved with a tree spade to a new location within a field nursery and three nontransplanted trees were selected as controls. Predawn leaf water potential, morning-to-evening stomatal conductance and leaf temperature, leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference, midday stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate, and growth data were collected over a 2-year period. The haemolymph JH III titres in solitarious and gregarious adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, were examined in relation to corpus allatum (CA) volumes, aggregation-maturation pheromone production in males and oocyte growth in females. The JH titres of gregarious females were generally higher than those of solitarious females at all ages studied. The titre patterns, however, were similar: relatively high on day 10, dropping to low levels between days 20 and 25, before rising again by day 25. In the solitarious males, the JH titre was very low on day 10 after fledging, but increased gradually and reached a maximal amount …

Research was conducted to investigate how energy balance of bark mulch and turf surfaces influence gas exchange and growth of recently transplanted trees. On several occasions over a 3-year period, stomatal conductance and leaf temperature were measured throughout the day on `Emerald Queen' Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) and `Greenspire' littleleaf linden (Tilia cordata Mill.) trees growing over each surface. Tree water loss was estimated using a general transport flux equation applied to the tree crown apportioned between sunlit and shade layers. Microclimate variables were measured over each surface with a permanent weather station. Tree growth data were collected at …
