In today’s world, there is an acute need to increase the usage of ecologically sustainable materials like AZ31 magnesium (Mg) alloy, possessing high strength-to-weight ratio and biocompatibility. However, its machinability through conventional machining techniques remains a challenge due to its high flammability. AWJM of Mg alloys is a promising method in this scenario. The present study investigated the effects of three important operating parameters, viz., stand-off distance (SOD), feed rate, and number of passes on the surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rq and Rz). Experiments were conducted based on Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array, and the effects of parameters on Ra, Rq …

Introduction: Cervical carcinoma is the second commonest malignancy among females worldwide. In India, about 365.71 million women aged over 15 years are more vulnerable to cervical carcinoma. Risk factors may include immunodeficiency diseases, herpes, smoking and oral contraceptives. Scientific literature has documented that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) could aggravate the risk of some malignancies (hepatic, pancreatic, endometrial). This study aimed to evaluate the potential association between cervical carcinoma and diabetes mellitus in women. Material and Methods: Patients with cervical carcinoma, with or without diabetes, were assigned to two groups based on attainment of menopause. SPSS version 11.5 was used …

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) involves numerous variables, but only a few significantly impact the classification task. The statistically equivalent signature (SES) method, inspired by constraint-based learning of Bayesian networks, is employed to identify essential features in CKD. Unlike conventional feature selection methods, which typically focus on a single set of features with the highest predictive potential, the SES method can identify multiple predictive feature subsets with similar performance. However, most feature selection (FS) classifiers perform suboptimally with strongly correlated data. The FS approach faces challenges in identifying crucial features and selecting the most effective classifier, particularly in high-dimensional data. This …

Endometriosis is a benign, estrogen-dependent, persistent chronic inflammatory heterogeneous condition that features fibrotic adhesions caused by periodic bleeding. The characteristic ectopic lesions are marked by a widely spread dense fibrotic interstitium comprising of fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, collagen fibers, extracellular proteins, inflammatory cells, and active angiogenesis. Fibrosis is now recognized as a critical component of endometriosis because of which current treatments, such as hormonal therapy and surgical excision of lesions are largely ineffective with severe side effects, high recurrence rates, and significant morbidity. The symptoms include dysmenorrhea (cyclic or noncyclic), dyspareunia, abdominal discomfort, and infertility. The significant lack of knowledge regarding the …

India is facing a growing burden of cancer, resulting in high cancer-associated mortality. However, the rise in cancer incidence is disproportionately high compared to access and provision of palliative care. This review aims to identify gaps in Indian cancer palliative care and recognises initiatives instituted to mitigate them. The narrative review was conducted using the four-step method described by Demiris et al., synthesising both empirical and non-empirical literature. A lack of capacity to provide palliative care was identified as a significant barrier. Initiatives such as setting up palliative care services in cancer treatment centres, improving community palliative care access, structured …

The preface of the permeated metaverse together with Web 3.0, has confluenced virtual and physical reality and can revolutionize social networks, healthcare, gaming and the educational system. Unfortunately, this assimilation has divulged ways for physical and virtual-reality-synthesized security threats like avatar impersonation and sybil attacks. Furthermore, the divergence in metaverse platforms and the involvement of central intermediaries prompted the demand for interoperability, security provisions and decentralization. Therefore, this paper projects a blockchain-integrated authentication protocol for a seamless interface in a cross-platform metaverse network with Web 3.0. The proposed mechanisms are structured for user and avatar authentication within cross-platforms while furnishing …

Disease can act as a driving force in shaping genetic makeup across populations, even species, if the impacts influence a particularly sensitive part of their life cycles. White-nose disease is caused by a fungal pathogen infecting bats during hibernation. The mycosis has caused massive population declines of susceptible species in North America, particularly in the genus Myotis. However, Myotis bats appear to tolerate infection in Eurasia, where the fungal pathogen has co-evolved with its bat hosts for an extended period of time. Therefore, with susceptible and tolerant populations, the fungal disease provides a unique opportunity to tease apart factors contributing …

Cyber-attacks continue to evolve, increasing in frequency and sophistication where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming essential in detecting modern malware. However, the accuracy of AI in malware detection is dependent on the quality of the features it is trained with. Static and dynamic analysis of malware is limited by the widespread use of obfuscation and anti-analysis techniques employed by malware authors, where if an analysis environment is detected the malware will hide its malicious behavior. However, Dynamic Binary Instrumentation (DBI) allows deep and precise control of the malware sample, thereby facilitating the extraction of authentic features from sophisticated and evasive …

Increases in consecutive days that meteorological, climatic and biophysical variables combine to influence fire is projecting an increase in fire size and intensity. This prompts investigation into the severity of recent fires to gain a better understanding of the factors that influence fire severity. Using a highly accurate spectral index, a geospatial analysis was undertaken to identify key variables that control the variability in fire severity of the 2021 Wooroloo Bushfire. Random Forest regression and General Additive Model (GAM) were utilised to determine variable importance in modelling fire severity and to create parsimonious models. Elevation and the Soil Dryness Index …

Characterization And Z-Score Calculation Of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging Parameters In Patients After The Fontan Operation: A Fontan Outcome Registry Using Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Examinations Study, Tarek Alsaied, Manish Aggarwal, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) offers valuable hemodynamic insights post-Fontan, but is limited by the absence of normative single ventricle data. The Fontan Outcomes Registry using CMR Examinations (FORCE) is a large international Fontan-specific CMR registry. This study used FORCE registry data to evaluate expected CMR ventricular size/function and create Fontan-specific z-scores adjusting for ventricular morphology (VM) in healthier Fontan patients.
METHODS: "Healthier" Fontan patients were defined as patients free of adverse outcomes, who are New York Heart Association class I, have mild or less valve disease, and < 30% aortopulmonary collateral burden. General linear modeling was performed on 70% of the dataset to create z-scores for volumes and function. Models were tested using the remainder (30%) of the data. The z-scores were compared between children and adults. The z-scores were also compared between "healthier" Fontan and patients with adverse outcomes (death, listing for transplantation, or multiorgan disease).
RESULTS: The "healthier" Fontan population included 885 patients (15.0 ± 7.6 years) …

Application Of Deep-Learning To Deep-Sea Species Identification From Image-Based Data, Eleanor Cross
School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses
Vast areas of the world’s deep sea are unexplored, and the recent threats of deep-sea mining and trawling make exploration of these habitats a time-sensitive concern. Much of our understanding of the deep sea has been based on physical sampling of sediment habitats using trawls and grabs, however, modern methods of surveying the deep sea involve the acquisition of video footage using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). Use of image-based methods is particularly important for sensitive or vulnerable species such as cold-water corals, especially considering these species tend to inhabit hard substrate areas that cannot be sampled using trawls. Annotation of …

This dataset contains emergence, biomass, and fungal biomass data collected during a laboratory study examining the effects of soil fungal level and seed coating treatment on the growth of bluebunch wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata). Pathogenesis from soil and seed-borne fungus can limit success when restoring native species. Fungicides can combat fungal pathogens, but in some studies, fungicides treatments are ineffective at improving seedling emergence over untreated, control seed. These studies suggest low fungal presence due to dry conditions may be the cause of the ineffectiveness of fungicide treatments for some years and sites. This study tested if fungicide treatment …
