The collapse of financial markets and exchange rates across Southeast and East Asia in 1997 and 1998 affected the economies of China and Vietnam much less than those of most other Asian countries. Ironically, the two transitional economies were protected to a great extent by the incomplete nature of their banking reforms and financial market development. The yuan and the dong were not yet traded internationally, securities markets were in very early stages of development, and tax codes, trade regulations, and accounting standards in the two countries did not yet fully conform to international norms. This thesis analyzes the encoding of discourse referents in oral narratives in Adzera, an SVO Austronesian language of Papua New Guinea. First, it classifies overt referents on a given-new continuum according to Prince's (1981) taxonomy of assumed familiarity, looking at the forms and positions used to introduce new entities into a discourse. Then it applies Givón's (1983, 1995) quantitative approach to measure the continuity of referents, whether overtly manifested or semantically implied as verb arguments. This study largely confirms the findings and predictions of Prince and Givón regarding the introduction of new information and the relative continuity of various forms …

This dissertation is a study of the process of palatalization in Isthmus Mixe, in which every consonant in the inventory has a palatalized counterpart. This type of palatalization occurring as a secondary [i]-like articulation, simultaneous to the primary articulation of the consonant (Bhat 1974, Ladefoged 1993), is defined as secondary palatalization by Keating (1993). Occurring word initially in Isthmus Mixe, the feature of secondary palatalization alone represents the grammatical third person morpheme, palatalizing the initial consonant of the noun or verb. There are also verbal suffixes that consist solely of secondary palatalization, indicating clause-type markers (Dieterman 1995, 1998), and a …

Kinematics Of Detachment Folding, Appalachian Valley And Ridge, West Virginia, Matthew N. Giffels

This study assesses the geometry and kinematics of a fold at the east edge of the Nittany Anticlinorium, Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province, West Virginia. Regional deformation consists of minor to major folds within two vertically stacked thrust sheets. Geometric analysis of a first-order fold in the upper, Silurian-Devonian sheet indicates it is a detachment fold with a detachment depth of up to four kilometers. The estimated detachment depth indicates involvement of the underlying, thrusted Cambrian-Ordovician sheet in the folding. Kinematic analysis of uplifted fold area relative to measured shortening amounts does not indicate a clear relationship. Finite strain measurements …

The effect of processing conditions on the crystallization of blends of a high-melting milk fat fraction and sunflower oil was investigated. Two cooling rates were selected for all studies: 0.1°C/min (slow rate) and 5.5°C/min (fast rate). Blends were crystallized in two conditions: (i) with agitation in an 80-mL crystallizer (dynamic), and (ii) on a microscope slide without agitation (static). The selected crystallization temperatures were 25, 30, and 35°C for both cooling rates. The effects of sunflower oil (SFO) and the sucrose esters (SE) P-1670, P-170, and S-170 on crystalline microstructure of a high-melting milk fat fraction (HMF) was studied by polarized-light microscopy (PLM) and confocal laser scanning microsopy (CLSM). The addition of SFO markedly diminished crystal size and delayed crystallization kinetics, as observed in PLM images. Addition of P-1670 modified crystallization behavior only slightly. Addition of P-170 and S-170, however, markedly diminished crystal size and led to more transparent crystals, with lower amount of solids in each crystal. Crystallization kinetics and rhelogical behavior of blends of high-melting milk-fat fraction (HMF) and sunflower oil (SFO) with and without addition of the sucrose esters P-170, S-170, and P-1670 were investigated. Addition of sucrose esters delayed crystallization, as was evidenced by the longer induction times of crystallization (t) and the lower maximum solid fat content (Smax). Values of penetration force and time corresponding to the 1st peak of curves force compared with time also diminished with addition of SFO. When sucrose esters were added, a solid fat content greater than 10% at the 1st crystallization temperature was necessary to give a …

External and internal features of minute reared ex ovo larvae of Ptinella tenella Erichson with the head widths ranging from 108 to 138 μm are described. In total 139 setae (trichoid sensilla), 18 pores (non-trichoid sensilla), and 60 muscles were identified. The complexity of the chaetotaxy, the musculature of the head, the tentorium, and the digestive tract are not affected by the extremely small size of the larvae. Specific features, which may have resulted from miniaturisation are the elongate shape of the brain reaching the mesothorax posteriorly, the reduced condition of the thoracic sclerites and endosternites, the simplified musculature of …

The non-target safety of two neem-based insecticides, Neemroc EC® (an oil formulation) and Neemros® (an oil-free powder formulation) to adults of Diadegma mollipla (Holmgren), a larval parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), was investigated in laboratory bioassays. The neem insecticides were compared against Karate® (a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide) and water as sprays. Karate® caused 100% mortality in treated wasps within 6 h, while the two neem insecticides did not cause any significant mortality. The mean longevity of wasps was not significantly affected by exposure to the two neem insecticides. The time allocation to different components of foraging behaviour …

Genetic Diversity Of The African Geocarpic Legume Kersting's Groundnut, Macrotyloma Geocarpum (Tribe Phaseoleae: Fabaceae), R. S. Pasquet, G. Mergeai, J. P. Baudoin

A survey of allozyme variation in Kersting's groundnut [Macrotyloma geocarpum (Harms) Maréchal and Baudet] was undertaken by examining 19 enzymes systems encoding 32 putative loci in 18 domesticated accessions and two wild accessions. No variation was found within and among domesticated accessions as well as within and between both wild accessions. However, very high genetic distance between wild and domesticated accessions suggests that they should be assigned to two different species. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Spatially resolved ROSAT X-ray and ground-based optical data for the southwestern region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant (SNR) reveal in unprecedented detail the very early stages of a blast-wave interaction with an isolated interstellar cloud. Numerous internal cloud shock fronts near the upstream flow and along the cloud edges are visible optically as sharp filaments of enhanced H emission. Faint X-ray emission is seen along a line of Balmer-dominated shock filaments north and south of the cloud with an estimated X-ray gas temperature of 1.2 106 K (0.11 keV), corresponding to a shock velocity of 290 km s1 . …

New trap designs for tsetse (Glossinidae), stable flies (Muscidae: Stomoxyinae), and horse flies (Tabanidae) were tested in Kenya to develop a multipurpose trap for biting flies. Many configurations and colour/fabric combinations were compared to a simplified, blue-black triangular trap to identify features of design and materials that result in equitable catches. New designs were tested against conventional traps, with a focus on Glossina pallidipes Austen and G. longipennis Corti, Stomoxys niger Macquart, and Atylotus agrestis (Wiedemann). Cotesia sesamiae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an indigenous, gregarious, larval endoparasitoid that attacks mid- to late-instar of the stem borer larvae. Although the parasitoid is distributed widely throughout Africa, not all local populations appear to be equally effective in controlling stem borers. Consequently, there is an interest in releasing the more effective strains in areas that already have very low populations of C. sesamiae. Some C. sesamiae populations are infected with bacterial symbionts in the genus Wolbachia, which may induce cytoplasmic incompatibility. Using an antibiotic treatment, we have established that the Wolbachia infection causes cytoplasmic incompatibility of the female mortality type …

This paper aims to examine the relationship between voluntary external audit by privately held firms and tax evasion in India. We use data generated by the World Bank Enterprise Survey which is based on interviews conducted over 2013 and 2014 only. Our final sample includes 7,262 privately held Indian firms. Our research reports the following results for privately held companies in India: (1) Firms with voluntarily audited financial statements are more likely to evade taxes; (2) Firms that face financing constraints are more likely to have stronger relationship between voluntary external audit and tax evasion; (3) Firms operating in Indian …

Their concept mixes tradition with technology to improve the quality of life for city dwellers. Research and development (R&D) plays a big role in this company’s success. Schaduf uses the concepts of soilless farming to grow rooftop crops for low-income households. The company also provides aesthetic solutions for businesses and homes to increase their green spaces. Religious Participation, Spirituality, And Coping Among African American College Students, Madonna G. Constantine, Leo Wilton, Kathy Gainor, Erica L. Lewis

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works

We explored the relationships among religious participation, spirituality, Africultural coping styles, and religious problem-solving styles in a sample of 144 African American college students. Results revealed that religious participation and spirituality accounted for significant variance in aspects of Africultural coping styles and religious problem-solving styles. Implications of the findings for college and university counseling center personnel are discussed.
