Wavelet Domain Diversity Method For Transmission Of Images Over Wireless Sytems Using Hybrid (Ofdm-Cdma-Sfh) Concept And Its Real Time Implementation In Tms320c6713 Dsp Development Board, Madhu Rangappagowda

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis a new OFDM based wavelet domain diversity combining method is proposed to combat errors during image transmission on wireless channels. A novel concept of utilizing OFDM sub-carriers to attain diversity is designed and analyzed. For images represented in the wavelet domain, diversity is used to obtain multiple data streams using OFDM symbols corresponding to the transmitted image at the receiver. These individual image data streams are combined to form a composite image with higher perceptual quality. Both uncompressed and compressed images are considered. The SPIHT algorithm is used for image compression. Diversity combining methods for both uncompressed …

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

The advent of Internet telephony and the surge in data communication field necessitate the use of broadband communication systems. The Optical communication systems has been suggested as an attractive solution to cope with the high speed data rate and large throughput bottleneck of the long haul communication systems due to their cheaper deployment cost. In the world of miniaturization, CMOS circuits have been widely used to develop the opto-electronic components. However, the intricacy involved in the design of high speed optical front-end is higher due to the poor noise performance of CMOS circuits compared to their bipolar counter parts. Despite …

Biology Theses - Archive

Gene duplication occurs when a mutation leads to the copying of a region of DNA that contains a functional gene. After duplication, there will be two copies of the gene in the genome. Gene duplication can have deleterious effects but it can also be the source of novelty. It has been acknowledged for a long time that selection may be relaxed for one copy rendering that locus free to mutate and discover new functions. Another of the fates of duplication of special notice is the formation of a pseudogene. Pseudogenes have been defined as nonfunctional sequences of genomic DNA originally …

Revisiting Castlio And Ferris-Swift's Experiments Testing The Effects Of Splenic Pump In Normal Individuals, Donald R. Noll, Jane C. Johnson

All KCOM Faculty Publications

Background: Castlio and Ferris-Swift conducted a series of experiments in the 1930s testing the scientific basis for using splenic pump manipulation to stimulate the immune system. Their work is still cited as evidence that the splenic pump technique is beneficial. However, they only reported case summaries of the data, indicating what percent of the cases increased or decreased relative to baseline and, therefore, limiting the certainty of their conclusions. To our knowledge, no one has published research confirming their findings. Objective: Our hypothesis is that an updated analysis of the raw data will support the original conclusions that splenic pump …

Do Aid Donors Reward Institutional Reforms?: A Panel Study On Aid-Receiving Countries, Wairimu R. Mugo Dec 2005

Do Aid Donors Reward Institutional Reforms?: A Panel Study On Aid-Receiving Countries, Wairimu R. Mugo

Economics Theses - Archive

Foreign aid is an important component of financial flows to many developing countries. This study seeks to investigate how foreign aid flows are influenced by two factors: the gross domestic products (GDP) per capita of the recipient countries, and changes in institutional and economic factors. For example, do increases in the GDP per capita of recipient countries attract more foreign aid in support of the on going economic and institutional reforms, or does this send a signal to the donors that these countries are doing well, and do not need as much aid? The question is whether aid donors reward …

Fabrication And Mechanical Characterization Of A Two-Ply Cross Fiber Stent And Fibers Comprising Blends Of Poly(L-Lactic Acid), Sushma Gampa

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Recent studies indicate that stabilization of vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques is critical for minimizing acute coronary syndromes. In this regard a new biodegradable stent design, the Two-ply cross fiber stent, has been developed to reduce stent-imposed stresses on such plaque and to provide increased drug reservoir capability. A comparative study of the mechanical properties of Two-ply and Single-ply stent designs was performed. Fibers comprising PLLA blends were developed and their thermal and mechanical properties were determined. Lateral spreading of helical fibers upon deployment of the Two ply design was observed that, in theory, may reduce stresses on the plaque surface. The …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Cotesia flavipes Cameron (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was introduced in Uganda in 1998 for the biological control of the old association cereal stemborer Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). However there is little information on whether this parasitoid will attack new association Lepidoptera, which in turn may have implications on its efficacy on Ch. partellus. This study investigated the incidence of introduced Co. flavipes on Ch. partellus, and new association lepidopteran species and associated effects on its efficacy. Parasitism levels for Co. flavipes in several locations varied between 13.7-34.8% and 1.5-18.8% on Ch. partellus and new association hosts, respectively. Implications for biological control …

The Usa Patriot Act And Civil Liberties: The Media's Response, M. Ann Bergstrom Dec 2005

The Usa Patriot Act And Civil Liberties: The Media's Response, M. Ann Bergstrom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the wake of terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001, the United States government hurriedly passed the USA PATRIOT Act. This legislation gives the Executive Branch sweeping new powers that could undermine the Bill of Rights and violate civil liberties in the name of national security. The media itself is protected by the First Amendment right to a free press and relies on other civil rights as well. This study is an attempt to gauge the print media's response to the Act by examining newspaper editorials about the PATRIOT Act since 2001 and determining their …

The Stability Of The Iodate -Arsenous Acid Reaction Front While Advected By Poiseuille Flow, Robert S. Spangler Dec 2005

The Stability Of The Iodate -Arsenous Acid Reaction Front While Advected By Poiseuille Flow, Robert S. Spangler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The competition between stabilizing and destabilizing effects is a motif that occurs in every aspect of the human experience. The coupling between the dynamics of chemical reactions and fluids offers a fruitful context in which to examine the patterns that arise in the presence of this competition.;The upward-propagating iodate-arsenous acid front is an example of a system in constant struggle. As it moves upward, it leaves a reacted solution of lesser density behind (and below) it. The system is thus subjected to a Raleigh-Taylor-like instability. On the other hand, the well understood (experimentally and theoretically) relationship between the front speed …

Investigation Of Pool Boiling Heat Transfer With Nanofluids, Gilberto Moreno

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This investigation conducts pool boiling experiments under saturated conditions (Tsat=60°C) using nanofluids as coolants. Four different nanofluids were tested including zinc oxide (ZnO)-water, aluminum oxide (Al2O3)-water, aluminum oxide (Al2O3)-water+ethylene glycol (ethylene glycol solution) and gold (Au)-water. At saturation (Tsat=60 °C), the pool boiling performance of Al2O3-water and ZnO-water nanofluids were similar. The maximum CHF enhancement as compared to predicted Zuber's [1] CHF evaluated at an equivalent saturation temperature is about 180% for Al2O3-water nanofluids and about 240% for ZnO-water nanofluids. In both cases, no degradation in the boiling heat transfer rate was observed for lower nanoparticle concentrations. The dispersion of …

The Flat-type LHS, 100 (W) × 254 (L) × 3 (T) mm3, was designed for vertical orientation. It showed a remarkable thermal performance by dissipating heat flux of 119 W/cm2 with below 100? chip temperature at the typical condition. The …

A Cmos Ultra-Wideband Differential Low Noise Amplifier, Timothy Bryan Merkin Nov 2005

A Cmos Ultra-Wideband Differential Low Noise Amplifier, Timothy Bryan Merkin

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

In this thesis, a CMOS Ultra-wideband (UWB) Low noise Amplifier (LNA) was designed and simulated. In the design, specific architecture decisions were made in consideration of ultimately including this LNA in a system-on-chip implementation of an Ultra-wideband communication system. The basic architecture of the LNA designed herein exhibits a differential amplifier core with active input and output impedance matching, minimizing the number of expensive space consuming passive inductors necessary for passive impedance matching networks. The LNA maintains a gain of 16.4dB with a ±0.25dB ripple over the band of 3.1-6.2GHz. Despite the use of an active input matching stage, the …

Cmos 5th Derivative Gaussian Impulse Generator For Uwb Application, Shin-Chih Chang Nov 2005

Cmos 5th Derivative Gaussian Impulse Generator For Uwb Application, Shin-Chih Chang

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

A complete impulse generating system was designed and simulated which generates the fifth order derivative of the Gaussian pulse intended for use in an impulse-type ultra-wideband wireless communication system. By using a continuous-time FIR impulse shaping filter, the system transforms a normal Gaussian pulse signal obtained from an existing CMOS Gaussian pulse generator into its fifth derivative. The transformation filtering was accomplished without lengthening the time duration of the original pulse or causing any noticeable ringing effects. The final output waveform closely resembles the fifth derivative of the Gaussian pulse, and also satisfies the spectral mask emission requirements specified by …

Dizin (Dizi) is an Omotic language spoken in Southwest Ethiopia with three main dialects. This thesis focuses on Central Dizin phonology and morphology, but includes some data from Eastern Dizin and Western Dizin. Prolonged language contact with Amharic has affected the sound system of Dizin and numerous Amharic words have been borrowed. Features of the Dizin sound system include glottalized consonants, syllabic nasals, lengthened vowels, three phonemic tone levels and contour tones. Western Dizin has phonemic retroflex consonants. The glottal stop is analyzed as phonemic word initially before nasals, but not phonemic elsewhere. Dizin is polysynthetic and more agglutinative than …

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan Nov 2005

Sunday In The Park With George: A Musical Curation By Stephen Sondheim, Amy Riordan

English Theses - Archive

This analysis serves to reveal the strong interconnectedness between museums and theatre (mentioned only briefly by other scholars) as uniquely demonstrated by Stephen Sondheim's musical, Sunday in the Park with George. Because Sondheim chose George Seurat's museum-housed painting, Sunday on the Island La Grande Jatte, as the foundation for his show, museum practices including labels, titles, ways of seeing, and curatorial authority--to which Seurat's painting has already been subjected--can also be located in Stephen Sondheim's musical. However, in the musical the artist is returned authority over his painting, above museum practice and curator bias. By granting the artist such dominion …
