Adaptive Sampling With Mobile Wsn, Koushil Sreenath
Adaptive Sampling With Mobile Wsn, Koushil Sreenath
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
The spatiotemporally varying network topology of mobile sensor networks makes it very suitable for applications such as reconstruction of environmental fields through sampling at locations that maximally reduce the largest uncertainty in the field estimate. Mobile sensor networks comprise of multiple heterogeneous resources and a deadlock-free resource scheduling in the presence of shared and routing resources becomes necessary to schedule the most efficient (cost / energy / time) resource for a task. Location information is imperative in sensor networks for most applications for localized sensing where localizing the network adaptively with no additional hardware is important. Adaptive sampling approaches for …

Duration And Depth: The Effects Of Leader-Follower Relationship Quality On Observer Ratings Of Leadership Performance, William David Rigdon
Duration And Depth: The Effects Of Leader-Follower Relationship Quality On Observer Ratings Of Leadership Performance, William David Rigdon
Psychology Theses - Archive
Previous research has shown that the duration and depth of the leader-follower relationship influences how followers rate their leaders. However, no studies were found that asked whether this relationship influenced how leader-supervisors rated leaders. This study investigated how the closeness (duration and depth) of the leader-follower relationship affected supervisor ratings. Based on previous research, this study expected to find a negative relationship between leader-follower closeness and supervisor ratings of overall performance, advancement potential and risk of career difficulty. Although the duration of the leader-follower relationship marginally supported this hypothesis, duration and depth together (closeness) did not.
Efficient Transcoding Of An Mpeg-2 Bit Stream To An H.264 Bit Stream, Rochelle B. Pereira
Efficient Transcoding Of An Mpeg-2 Bit Stream To An H.264 Bit Stream, Rochelle B. Pereira
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
Low complexity fast transcoding of an MPEG-2 elementary stream to an H.264 elementary stream. Objective: MPEG-2 has been a widely accepted video coding standard for various applications ranging from DVD to digital TV broadcast. The new H.264 AVC standard has an even broader perspective to support high and low bit rate multimedia applications on existing and future networks. The advantage in terms of better quality at a lower bit rate is why H.264 is fast replacing MPEG-2. However, the user end hardware had previously been adapted for MPEG-2 streams. This gives rise to a need for portability between MPEG-2 and …

Reproductive Behaviors Of Two Congeneric, Sympatric Jumping Spiders: Gene Flow Barriers And Polyandry, Stacey Nicole Gingras
Biology Theses - Archive
This two part study compares aspects of jumping spider reproductive behavior and their implications 1) as gene flow barriers during the process of speciation and 2) in the occurrence of polyandry. Courtship behaviors of Phidippus audax and P. carolinensis were observed. P. carolinensis displays simple courtship behavior when compared to the visually complex behavior of P. audax. P. carolinensis males appear to be incorporating a vibratory element into their courtship display, and a possible stridulatory organ, located on the male pedipalp, is described. Large differences in courtship display, complexity of courtship badges, and phenologies between the species most likely prevent …

This thesis focuses in investigation of the failure mechanism of the [±?/02]s and [02/±?]s laminates with a hole. ANSYS finite element models with and without a crack in vicinity of hole were developed to investigate the effect of the stress distribution due to the presence of the angle ply crack. The stress concentrations were obtained. It is found that …
Structural Optimization Using Ansys And Regulated Multiquadric Response Surface Model, Ajaykumar Menon
Structural Optimization Using Ansys And Regulated Multiquadric Response Surface Model, Ajaykumar Menon
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The high computational expense of large non-linear and complex finite element analysis limits or often prohibits the use of conventional codes in engineering design and multidisciplinary optimization. Consequently alternate methods such as Design of experiments (DOE) and Response surface approximation are commonly used to minimize the computational cost of running such analysis and simulation. The basic approach of such methods is to construct a simplified mathematical approximation of the computationally expensive simulation and analysis code, which is then used in place of the original code to facilitate multidisciplinary optimization, design space exploration, reliability analysis etc. When such codes along with …

Effects Of Water-Cement Ratio On Deep Mixing Treated Expansive Clay Characteristics, Siva Prasad Pathivada
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
The structures built on the unstabilized expansive soils are subjected to distress due to swell shrink behavior due to seasonal fluctuations. Medium stiff expansive clays with moderate and high PI were collected from two sites located at IH 820 N bound in Fort Worth, Texas. Deep soil mixing technique was proposed as a potential solution to counter the shrink swell movements of the expansive soil. These soils were stabilized using lime and cement as a whole and in combinations at different proportions in laboratory conditions simulating field deep soil mixing. Similar studies performed on soft soils revealed several factors mainly …
Numerical Modeling And Analysis Of Pile Supported Embankments, Krishna Nag Rao
Numerical Modeling And Analysis Of Pile Supported Embankments, Krishna Nag Rao
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Very soft clays are often avoided in construction due to their low shear strength and high compressibility. Special construction methods are adopted when embankments are constructed on very soft clay or peat. Design of structures on soft ground, where the structure impose large loads onto the ground raises several concerns on factors like bearing capacity failure, differential settlements, lateral pressures and structural instability. Shallow and deep stabilization of soft ground are most frequently used special construction techniques adopted in geotechnical engineering. Chemical (lime and cement) stabilization has been extensively used in both shallow and deep stabilization in order to improve …

Statistics-Based Approaches To Stochastic Optimal Control Problems, Aihong Wen
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation develops practical approaches to stochastic optimal control problems in the absence of linear system transition functions, quadratic cost functions, and/or Gaussian random disturbances. In such type of problems, an analytical solution is impossible and numerical synthesis techniques have to be applied. The ''classic'' algorithms existing in the literature suffer from the problem of the''curse of dimensionality,'' an exponential increase of computation time and memory requirements as the dimension of the problem grows. The statistics-based numerical approaches are presented as the main tools for mitigating the ``curse of dimensionality'' phenomenon. Two approaches are explored: (A) stochastic dynamic programming (SDP), …

Infosearch: A System For Searching And Retrieving Documents Using Complex Queries, Nikhil Deshpande
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The colossal amount of information available online has resulted in overloading users who need to navigate this information for their routine requirements. Although search engines have been effective in reducing this information overload, they support only queries involving keywords and Boolean operators. There are certain application domains where more expressive ways of searching are necessary. Consider searching a full-text patent database for documents containing more than n occurrences of a pattern, or for documents that have a particular pattern followed by another pattern within a specified interval. Such complex patterns involving pattern frequency and sequence, as well as patterns involving …

Customization Of A Generic Search Engine By Adding User Categories, Ajay Mohandas Madkaiker
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The current search engines available on the Net are generic in nature. They do not consider user preferences and treat all users information needs in the same way. As a result they frequently return a large number of links, that do not meet the user's information need. This requires more searching to find what the user is looking for. For example if a user is interested in a particular game, e.g. cricket, and enters the query world cup, a generic search engine would return links of all the sports that hold a world cup. The user has to browse through …

Estream: An Integration Of Event And Stream Processing, Vihang Garg
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Event and stream data processing models have been researched extensively and are utilized in diverse application domains. Advanced applications require both event and stream processing, which is currently not supported. Although there are number of similarities and differences between them, a synergistic integration of their strengths will be better than the sum of their parts. In this thesis, we present EStream, an integrated event and stream processing system for monitoring changes on stream computations and for expressing and processing complex events on continuous queries (CQs). We introduce attribute-based constraints for reducing uninteresting events that are generated from CQs. We discuss …
Testing Java Monitors By State Space Exploration, Monica Maria Hernandez
Testing Java Monitors By State Space Exploration, Monica Maria Hernandez
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Java monitors are classes that are intended to be accessed by multiple threads at the same time. Detecting synchronization faults in Java Monitors is considerably more challenging than testing regular classes, due to the inherent non-determinism of concurrent programs. This thesis proposes a state based exploration approach to testing Java monitors. This approach consists of exploring the state space of a Java monitor in a depth-first manner, dynamically building test sequences, which are comprised by the states explored along each path. Moreover, threads are introduced on the fly during the exploration of each path, based on several rules for simulating …

Hdb-Subdue, A Relational Database Approach To Graph Mining And Hierarchical Reduction, Srihari Padmanabhan
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Data mining aims at discovering interesting and previously unknown patterns from data sets. Transactional mining (association rules, decision trees etc.) can be effectively used to find non-trivial patterns in categorical and unstructured data. For applications that have an inherent structure (e.g., chemical compounds, proteins) graph mining is appropriate, because mapping the structured data into other representations would lead to loss of structure. The need for mining structured data has increased in the past few years. Graph mining uses graph theory principles to perform mining. Database mining of graphs aims at mining structured graph data stored in relational database tables using …
Graph-Based Learning Using A Naive Bayesian Classifier, Robert Hawes
Graph-Based Learning Using A Naive Bayesian Classifier, Robert Hawes
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Graph-based data representation is becoming increasingly more commonplace, as graphs can represent some kinds of data more efficiently than relational tables. As such, interesting patterns in the form of subgraphs can be discovered by mining these graph-based datasets. Because the learned patterns can be used to predict future occurrences, it is necessary to learn graphical concepts that can optimally classify the data in the presence of uncertainty. This work explores the construction and learning of optimal naïve Bayesian graph classifiers to distinguish between positive and negative graphs given a set of graphs as examples. Whereas most previous work in graph-based …

Approaches For Validating Frequent Episodes Based On Periodicity In Time-Series Data, Dhawal Y. Bhatia
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
There is ongoing research on sequence mining of time-series data. We study Hybrid Apriori, an interval-based approach to episode discovery that deals with different periodicities in time-series data. Our study identifies the anomaly in the Hybrid Apriori by confirming the false positives in the frequent episodes discovered. The anomaly is due to the folding phase of the algorithm, which combines periods in order to compress data. We propose a main memory based solution to distinguish the false positives from the true frequent episodes. Our algorithm to validate the frequent episodes has several alternatives such as the naïve approach, the partitioned …

Evolving Modular Programs By Extracting Reusable Functions Using Significance Testing, Anthony Loeppert
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Genetic programming is an automatic programming method that uses biologically inspired methods to evolve programs. Genetic programming, and evolutionary methods in general, are useful for problem domains in which a method for \emph{constructing} solutions is either not known or infeasible, but a method for \emph{rating} solutions exists. In order to address more complex problem domains, techniques exist to extract functions (modules) automatically during a GP search. This work describes a method to identify useful automatically extracted functions from a GP search to assist subsequent GP searches within the same problem domain, using significance testing. Functions classified as beneficial augment the …
