New Visions Of Community In Contemporary American Fiction: Tan, Kingsolver, Castillo, Morrison., Magali Michael

Faculty Books

In this engaging, optimistic close reading of five late twentieth-century novels by American women, Magali Cornier Michael illuminates the ways in which their authors engage with ideas of communal activism, common commitment, and social transformation. The fictions she examines imagine coalition building as a means of moving toward new forms of nonhierarchical justice; for ethnic cultures that, as a result of racist attitudes, have not been assimilated, power with each other rather than power over each other is a collective goal.Michael argues that much contemporary American fiction by women offers models of care and nurturing that move away from the …

Measuring Information Systems Delivery Quality., Johannes "Han" Reichgelt, Evan W. Duggan Jan 2006

Measuring Information Systems Delivery Quality., Johannes "Han" Reichgelt, Evan W. Duggan

Faculty Books

Currently, there is neither a commonly-accepted definition of information systems (IS) quality nor a convergence of perspectives on quality approaches. The IS community has focused on the various contributions of people, delivery processes, development philosophies and methods. Measuring Information Systems Delivery Quality represents a spotlight on IS quality that represents the efforts of authors from several countries across the globe. Despite this diversity, this book reflects the common position that improving objective knowledge of potentially quality-enhancing methods is far more likely to assist the production of high-quality software than experimentation with each new gadget. Measuring Information Systems Delivery Quality provides …

Marilyn Cane, 1031 Tenant in Common Exchanges: A "TIC" king Time Bomb at the Intersection of Real Estate, Securities, and Tax Law?, 14 University of Miami Business Law Review 273 (2006). Those who follow economic trends know that investing in real estate has recently become a hotbed of activity. In response to the stock market's unpredictability, investors have been drawn to the commercial real estate market in record numbers, seeking to capitalize on low interest rates coupled with the rising appreciation such properties have offered. In addition to the potential upside of such investments, many commercial property investors seek …

Implantable Drug Delivery System With In-Plane Micropump, Amit A. Mhatre Jan 2006

Implantable Drug Delivery System With In-Plane Micropump, Amit A. Mhatre

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

A MEMS based Implantable Drug Delivery System (IDDS) is discussed. The heart of the system is an in-plane MEMS micropump enables us to make a compact, inexpensive system. A conceptual IDDS design is proposed. This design consists of an implantable unit which houses the micropump, electronic and power circuitry. This implantable unit is connected to a subcutaneous port via a silicone catheter. The subcutaneous port acts as a refillable reservoir. This leads to a reduction in unit volume and makes the system customizable. The IDDS pumps drug into surrounding tissue with the help of a MEMS-based micropump. The force generated …

Projects That Assist With Content In A Traditional Organic Chemistry Course, John J. Esteb, John R. Magers, Luanne Mcnulty, Anne M. Wilson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Projects that engage undergraduate students in content-based courses, such as organic chemistry, must relate to the material and provide useful tools for the divergent needs of the students. There are few examples of these types of projects in the literature. Herein, we describe two projects, the reaction notebook and the end-of-semester synthesis activity. Each project is designed to stimulate student ownership of the material and leads to engagement with the content of the course.

Diachronic Change In The Discourse Markers "Why" And "Say" In American English, Laurel Smith Stvan Jan 2006

Diachronic Change In The Discourse Markers "Why" And "Say" In American English, Laurel Smith Stvan

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Generational variation and contrasts in speech vs. writing are shown in usage of the discourse markers why and say across 20th century American English. Collocating with earlier 20th century address forms (e.g. say, pal rather then say, dude) these forms appear more dated than interjectional markers like oh, well, and so, Further, distinct subtypes of why and say show different frequencies across time. Using corpora of English from different eras, I present a diachronic description of these terms, and show evidence of new terms (e.g. hey and yo) taking over some of the functions that why and say once covered. …

What Myths Reveal About How Humans Think: A Cognitive Approach To Myth, Keith Mitchell Hodge Jan 2006

What Myths Reveal About How Humans Think: A Cognitive Approach To Myth, Keith Mitchell Hodge

Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive

This thesis has two main goals: (1) to argue that myths are natural products of human cognition; and (2) that structuralism, as introduced by Claude Levi-Strauss, provides an over-arching theory of myth when supplemented and supported by current research in philosophy of mind, cognitive psychology, and cognitive anthropology. With regard to (1), we argue that myths are naturally produced by the human mind through individuals' interaction with their natural and social environments. This interaction is constrained by both the type of body the individual has and the environment in which the individual is situated. From this interaction, we argue, is …

Scribal Habits And Theological Influences In The Apocalypse : The Singular Readings Of Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, And Ephraemi, Juan Hernández Jr. Jan 2006

Scribal Habits And Theological Influences In The Apocalypse : The Singular Readings Of Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, And Ephraemi, Juan Hernández Jr.

Faculty Books

Modelled on the respective studies of Ernest C. Colwell and James R. Royse, Juan Hernández Jr. offers a fresh and comprehensive discussion of the Apocalypse's singular readings in Sinaiticus, Alexandrinus, and Ephraemi. Moreover, the singular readings of the Apocalypse are also assessed in light of the work's reception history in the early church. The author shows that the scribes of these three manuscripts omitted more often than they added to their texts, were prone to harmonizing, and, in the case of at least one scribe, made significant theological changes to the fourth century text of the Apocalypse. The author also …

"When Are The Japanese Japanese?" Negotiating Japanese Cultural Identity In A Japan-Us Binational Organization, Noriko Yagi

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Based on a seven-month ethnographic study in a Japanese subsidiary in the US located in Southern California, this research describes when the organization members categorized as the Japanese are Japanese. One of the purposes of the research is to challenge the widely held assumption in the body of international business research that every organization member from a certain nation is under the influence of the national culture all the time in terms of its impact on their behavior, cognition and emotive expressions. This research brings the assumption that an individual could have multiple cultural identities into the analysis. Under this …

Active Flow Control Of Low Pressure Turbine Blade Separation Using Plasma Actuators, Karthik Ramakumar Jan 2006

Active Flow Control Of Low Pressure Turbine Blade Separation Using Plasma Actuators, Karthik Ramakumar

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The current study examines plasma actuators as flow control devices. The actuators are placed on a turbine blade profile in a 2D turbine cascade for separation flow control. The configuration involves copper strips separated by a layer of dielectric material, across which an AC electric potential in the range of 5 kHz and 5 kV is applied. The efficiency of the actuator is monitored by measuring power input and flow control effectiveness. Preliminary observations are performed for a quiescent case on a flat plate profile to analyze the average and instantaneous velocities generated by the actuator for varied input parameters, …
