On The Study Of Multi-Channel Eeg: Lossless Compression, Signal Modeling And Classification, Yodchanan Wongsawat
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Recently, electroencephalogram (EEG) has become necessary for diagnosis, telemedicine, and brain computer interface (BCI). This thesis investigates three signal processing tools which can explore multi-channel structures of the EEG for different applications such as lossless compression, artifact removal, and classification. First, this thesis presents a method for approximating the Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) of multi-channel EEG signals. The proposed transform is further parameterized by lifting factorization by which the coefficients' dynamic range is controlled through a proposed pivoting scheme, rendering a reversible structure under quantization of coefficients called IntSKLT. A lossless coder for multi-channel EEG signals which exploits inter-channel correlation among …

XML keyword search has been a widely researched area. [15] has proposed an XML semantic search engine called OOXSearch, which answers loosely structured queries. The framework of OOXSearch takes into account the semantic relationship between nodes based on their contexts. The context of a node is determined by its parent node. The label "name", for example, could mean the name of a book and could also mean the name of the book's author. If we try to consider the relationship between these two nodes without considering their parent nodes, we would be drawing the incorrect conclusion that these two nodes …

Limitations Of Ieee 802.15.4 Based Wireless Mesh Networks For Wireless Localization, William Anthony Wallace
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
It is highly desirable to create rapidly and inexpensively deployable mesh networks in certain scenarios. Consider the case of a large storage warehouse; workers are constantly moving in the area and not only do they need to send data periodically but their location needs to be tracked as well. Setting up such network can be accomplished with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, but a mesh network must be created. There would need to be stationary 802.15.4 nodes that join together to form a backbone infrastructure. This backbone infrastructure (mesh network) would allow the workers, using mobile 802.15.4 nodes, to transmit their …

Many Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) products have been commercialized at a fraction of the cost and size of conventional devices. Low cost, small sizes and multi-function are the ultimate objectives of commodity MEMS devices. An intelligent micro-system requires that the processing circuitry, sensors, and actuators be integrated on the same chip. Integrated MEMS can improve performance of the overall product in several applications. In this work integrated MEMS devices are investigated through semiconducting Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBaCuO) microbolometer arrays on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) substrates, a novel tunable infrared microspectrometer, and a novel device-level packaging technique for MEMS resonators. …

Design And Functionality Analysis Of Operational Amplifiers With Rail-To-Rail Input And Output Capability, Mingsheng Peng
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
The operational amplifier (op amp) is a fundamental building block in analog integrated circuit design. For low power-supply voltages, the common-mode input voltage and the output voltage of op amps are always required to be able to swing from the negative power-supply rail to the positive power-supply rail, i.e., rail-to-rail. In this dissertation, op amps with rail-to-rail input and output capability are investigated. This dissertation mainly focuses on the rail-to-rail input stage design. Two different rail-to-rail input stages with a single differential pair and a common-mode adapter are presented. The common-mode adapter is used to shift the common-mode input voltage. …

The Mexican American civil rights movement surfaced in the 1960s and 1970s as a direct response to blatant institutional discrimination and neglect. The participation of women within the movement, however, has been overwhelmingly marginalized in favor of a largely male-dominated interpretation. Indeed, Mexican American women in Texas displayed a variety of perspectives about religious and ethnic identity, feminism, and politics during this time. Drawing on their own rich heritage and mutual experiences with discrimination based on race, gender, and class, these women nevertheless developed conflicting ideas about the abovementioned topics. How each woman fashioned her own environment according to her …

Sequences Of Bayes Gaussian Classifier, Jimy Shah
Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive
A new method for designing sequences of Bayes Gaussian Classifiers is presented in this thesis. First, a basic Bayes Gaussian Classifier is designed with an assumption of data being Gaussian. Then, we have used the Output Weight Optimization-Back Propagation (OWO-BP) technique to iteratively modify the coefficients of the classifier, resulting in less classification error. Through use of an iterative Gram-Schmidt procedure, to train linear functional link nets, input features are ordered from most useful to least useful. Another important development in this thesis is the generation of nested feature subsets. This ensures that the curve for error percentage versus the …

Ring Closing Enyne Metathesis Of Imidazole Derivatives And Subsequent Diels-Alder Reaction, E. Vindana Ekanayake
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
The work presented in this thesis describes the development of new synthetic routes to elaborate simple imidazole derivatives into complex imidazole molecules by the application of different sequential transformations. The first transformation considered is the ring closing enyne metathesis (RCEYM) of imidazoles. To carry out this reaction various allyl and propargyl derivatives of imidazole have been synthesized. These enyne substrates have been varied by changing the positions on the imidazole, as well as changing the protecting groups. All substrates contain trimethysilyl-protected propargyl derivative as the "yne" moiety. After the successful preparation of different enyne substrates, they were subjected to the …

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
This paper introduces and identifies classes of progenitively Koszul rings. A progenitively Koszul ring is a commutative ring that admits a Koszul complex A=K(R) that is formal, and such that the homology algebra H(A) generated by A is a Koszul algebra. Local complete intersections, which yield exterior algebras (an example of a Koszul algebra) for their homology algebras, serve as a prototype. It is shown that the local complete intersections occupy only a small portion of the class of progenitively Koszul rings. The material in Chapter 1 will cover basic definitions and facts regarding free resolutions differential graded algebras, homology, …
Multiply Charged Cationic Pairing Agents For Trace Analysis Of Anionic Species By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Jeffrey William Remsburg
Multiply Charged Cationic Pairing Agents For Trace Analysis Of Anionic Species By Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, Jeffrey William Remsburg
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Electrospray ionization is one of the most broadly useful and successful approaches for coupling high performance liquid chromatography to mass spectrometry. Most of the research in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) has been limited to the positive ion mode, where lower detection limits are generally achieved, due several advantages over the more problematic negative ion mode. However, if one wishes to study anionic species, the negative ion mode traditionally had to be employed, and the problems associated with the negative ion mode had to be tolerated or ameliorated as much as possible Recently, novel work has been done to take …

Anticancer drugs have been shown to have antiviral abilities as well. The two types of diseases are similar in that they hold the cell in a continued growth phase. Therefore, if a drug has anticancer activity, it could have antiviral activity as well. I was interested in drugs that could inhibit DNA replication, since both cancer cells and cells infected with a DNA virus have increased DNA replication. Organotins are known to have anticancer activity and are thought to inhibit DNA replication. In this study, four cancer cell lines (from the NCI 60) and two DNA viruses, HSV-1 and vaccinia, …

Research on occupational sex segregation and the gender wage gap has consistently shown differences between male and female workers with regards to both position and salary with males segregated in higher positions within companies and accruing higher salaries than females even in similar positions. Two primary explanations have emerged to explain these differences. Supply-side explanations, such as those put forth by economists, assume that the desires of male and female workers are different thus creating women’s disadvantaged work positions. Demand-side explanations, such as those examined in queuing theory, postulate that those in charge of hiring are biased towards male workers …

Deep Mixing Technology For Mitigation Of Swell-Shrink Behavior Of Expansive Soils Of Moderate To Deep Active Depths, Raja Sekhar Madhyannapu
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Expansive soils are well known for their cyclic shrink-swell behavior due to seasonal related moisture changes. These cyclic movements of expansive soils are due to physico-chemical changes at particle level that are dependent on mineralogical composition of these soils. The subsoil depths susceptible to moisture changes are known as active zones and based on previous studies vary from shallow to deep depths. Movements from these active depths reflect to the surface and cause considerable damages to overlying infrastructures. These damages are slow and time dependent as the in situ moisture fluctuations are slow and continue with time. Since the current …

Ralbp1 is a multi-specific transporter of glutathione conjugates as well as unconjugated amphiphilic toxins. Because glutathione conjugates are major metabolites of toxic lipid peroxidation products generated as a consequence of oxidant and radiant stress, the hypothesis is put forth that the function of Ralbp1 in-vivo and in vitro should be to protect organisms from chemical stress by removing toxic chemicals. Studies described in this dissertation were designed to prove this hypothesis. We tested the hypothesis by examining whether the inhibition or augmentation of Ralbp1 would sensitize or protect cells and whole animals from the toxic effects of chemicals and radiation. …

This thesis explores the possibility that experience with green buildings influences peoples' behavior in ways that help bridge the gap between, on one hand, public concern for the natural environment and on the other hand, willingness to adopt sustainable lifestyles and support pro-environmental policies. The study utilizes research on factors that influence behavior to construct a theoretical model in which these factors might be influenced by a person's experience in a green building. The study explores two specific possibilities of behavioral change: people may change their consumption habits to reflect a more sustainable lifestyle; people may change their political behavior …

Both analytical and numerical results are presented for two rigid body problems: a rod colliding with the ground, and a rigid thin plate colliding with the ground. The study of the succession of impacts of the rod with the ground confirms results from literature, and explores new cases. Numerical simulations can provide results in the study of the clattering impacts of a 3D body colliding with the ground. For a simplification of the analytical calculations, a rectangular plate without thickness is studied. In this case, a comparison between the numerical method, which is a continuous contact method, and the analytical …

A novel computational methodology is proposed for the intraoperative localization of biliary tree structures by means of spectrally resolved near-infrared reflectance measurements. As these structures are embedded in fatty tissue, they cannot be visualized directly, which results in inadvertent injuries during a cholecystectomy operation. Localizing the biliary tree intraoperatively is therefore an important clinical problem. Successful clinical implementation of an imaging system which could attain this goal would reduce surgical time, improve patient safety, and minimize the risk of complications and expenses attributable to the current standard practice of intraoperative cholangiography. It is hoped that the work presented here will …
