Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone Oct 2008

Microtextural Constraints On The Interplay Between Fluidrockreactions And Deformation, Alexis K. Ault, Jane Selverstone

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Schists from two mylonitic localities in the footwall of a low-angle normal fault in the eastern Alps record different degrees of embrittlement during exhumation, depending on the extent to which fluid–rock reactions proceeded. At one site, graphitic schists preserve textural evidence for two metamorphic reactions that modified XCO2XCO2 and/or fluid volume: (1) reaction between graphite and aqueous fluid that increased XCO2XCO2 without changing the molar amount of fluid, and (2) replacement of titanite by rutile, calcite, and quartz. The latter reaction involved net consumption of increasingly CO2-rich fluid. Areas where the first reaction proceeded are associated with abundant Mode I …

Impact Of Vegetable Oil On Distribution Of Trichloroethylene In Groundwater During Enhanced Bioremediation, M. Pu, Ryan Dupont, William J. Doucette Oct 2008

Impact Of Vegetable Oil On Distribution Of Trichloroethylene In Groundwater During Enhanced Bioremediation, M. Pu, Ryan Dupont, William J. Doucette

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Vegetable oils are increasingly being used as long-term carbon donors to stimulate reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE). Besides potential enhancement of biodegradation, the addition of vegetables oils may impact TCE fate and distribution within the aquifer by acting as non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL). Distribution coefficients for TCE between groundwater and four vegetable oils were determined using a slow-stir technique. Log vegetable oil/water distribution coefficients (log Kvw) were found to range from 1.0 to 2.56. TCE/vegetable oil distribution coefficients statistically increased with an increase in oil weathering while the concentration of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water did not change …

The reproductive compatibility between four different species/populations of the tephritid parasitoid Psyttalia (Walker) species from Kenya and individuals of the morphologically identical Psyttalia concolor (Szépligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) from a laboratory culture in Italy used in augmentative biological control of olive fly, Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin) (Diptera: Tephritidae) was assessed through cross mating tests using single-pair and group mating methods. Reciprocal crosses among the species resulted in the production of viable offsprings up to the second generation. In spite of the successful production of viable offspring in the laboratory, Psyttalia species are known to have specific host fruit and/or host fly preferences …

Bringing Together Local Culture And Rural Development: Findings From Ireland, Pennsylvania And Alaska, M. A. Brennan, Courtney G. Flint, A. E. Luloff

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The developmental trajectories of communities are routinely explained by reference to economic history, human capital deficits, or the structure of local labour markets. The role of local culture in understanding community development or in interpreting empirical research has received less attention. We believe culture plays an important independent role in shaping community debate and action. Framing community as an interactional field emphasises the opportunities created when people who share interests come together to address local problems. Interaction and local culture are essential parts of community and community development. Appreciating community uniqueness and local culture helps in the interpretation of study …

Librarians, Advocacy And The Research Enterprise, D. Scott Brandt

Libraries Research Publications

Opportunities are opening up to create and promote new roles for librarians, identifying and building new services, and ultimately increasing funding and visibility for the academic library, especially given the evolving nature of research in a data intensive environment. Advocating the research enterprise means working with researchers on problems, and often on proposals for grants to pay for the work. But foremost it means making introductions, building rapport, being able to follow up and follow through on communication, developing relationships and forging partnerships.

A Parallel Spectral Element Method For Dynamic Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Elasticity Problems, S. Dong, Z. Yosibash Sep 2008

A Parallel Spectral Element Method For Dynamic Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Elasticity Problems, S. Dong, Z. Yosibash

PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems

We present a high-order method employing Jacobi polynomial-based shape functions, as an alternative to the typical Legendre polynomial-based shape functions in solid mechanics, for solving dynamic three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear elasticity problems. We demonstrate that the method has an exponential convergence rate spatially and a second-order accuracy temporally for the four classes of problems of linear/geometrically nonlinear elastostatics/elastodynamics. The method is parallelized through domain decomposition and message passing interface (MPI), and is scaled to over 2000 processors with high parallel performance.

The Search For Appropriate Form: The Relationship Between Landscape Architecture And Art In Three Time Periods, Elizabeth Matlock Sep 2008

The Search For Appropriate Form: The Relationship Between Landscape Architecture And Art In Three Time Periods, Elizabeth Matlock

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Art and landscape architecture are both a means through which man can explore the natural world around him; they provide an opportunity for self expression and reflection. This thesis is based on the hypothesis that several times throughout history landscape architects and designers have looked to art for inspiration in times of change within the profession and that as that relationship evolved the roles have reversed. In the past landscape architects and designers have looked to art for inspiration, now artists are looking to landscape architects for inspiration and form determination. Three periods of history exemplify this changing relationship: the …

Industry reports continue to portray a dismal picture of software development project success. Software projects continue to be over budget, overdue and lacking in quality and desired functionality. A variety of innovative methodologies and tools have been introduced to aid in improving the software development process. However, there has been reluctance to commit to their usage. The goal of this research is to examine the reasons a software developer makes a commitment to use a given development methodology. We used a theoretically integrated approach to study this phenomenon, drawing on theories from the fields of marketing as well as psychology. …

The Relationship Between Designed Urban Environments And Skateboarding In Downtown Fort Worth, Nicholas Glade Nelson Sep 2008

The Relationship Between Designed Urban Environments And Skateboarding In Downtown Fort Worth, Nicholas Glade Nelson

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Cities are a collection of designed environments. In turn, these environments consist of parts that vary in scale from districts to light fixtures. The design of outdoor urban environments is a dynamic and collaborative process of arranging these parts to create places with purpose. Evidence of this can be found in the numerous professions that participate in the design of urban environments (Eckbo, 1964). Such is the case in the city of Fort Worth, Texas. With many participants, often unilaterally, contributing to the design of built urban environments, not all of the ensuing results are intentional. The objective of this …

Tree Preservation And Its Impact On Residential Development And Real Estate Value, Melissa Gerstle

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Mature trees create more attractive residential neighborhoods and contribute a significant amount to the resale value of a home (Benotto, 2002). According to the National Arbor Day Foundation, one mature tree can amount to at least $10,000 of a home's resale value and will typically account for 15 percent of the property's value (Benotto 2002). In addition, the combined economic value of a street lined with mature trees is greater than the net sum of the value of the individual trees (Benotto 2002). While large, mature trees add substantial economic value to a residential development, tree growth is a slow …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Background. To combat malaria, the Kenya Ministry of Health and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have distributed insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for use over beds, with coverage for children under five years of age increasing rapidly. Nevertheless, residents of fishing villages have started to use these bed nets for drying fish and fishing in Lake Victoria. This study investigated the extent of bed net misuse in fishing villages. Methods. Seven fishing villages along the lake were surveyed to estimate how widely bed nets were being used for fishing and drying fish. Villagers were asked why they used the bed nets for such purposes. …

Mitigation Banking And The Problem Of Consolidation, Gorden Steinhoff Sep 2008

Mitigation Banking And The Problem Of Consolidation, Gorden Steinhoff

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

A mitigation bank is a large wetland or wetland complex that is restored or created for the sake of selling credits to private developers or government agencies to compensate for the loss of natural wetlands. Mitigation banking is now emphasized within federal environmental policy. Proponents of banking claim that banking is beneficial to the environment, but studies have shown that this practice threatens biodiversity. The problem is consolidation. With banking, wetlands in a broad geographical area are collapsed into a relatively small area. Wetlands within banks tend to be larger and they are less diverse in type than the wetlands …

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

In this study, we investigated the effects of the major green tea polyphenol, (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on high-fat-induced obesity, symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver in mice. In mice fed a high-fat diet (60% energy as fat), supplementation with dietary EGCG treatment (3.2 g/kg diet) for 16 wk reduced body weight (BW) gain, percent body fat, and visceral fat weight (P < 0.05) compared with mice without EGCG treatment. The BW decrease was associated with increased fecal lipids in the high-fat-fed groups (r2 = 0.521; P < 0.05). EGCG treatment attenuated insulin resistance, plasma cholesterol, and monocyte chemoattractant protein concentrations in high-fat-fed mice (P < 0.05). EGCG treatment also decreased liver weight, liver triglycerides, and plasma alanine aminotransferase concentrations in high-fat-fed mice (P < 0.05). Histological analyses of liver samples revealed decreased lipid accumulation in hepatocytes in mice treated with EGCG compared with high-fat diet-fed mice without EGCG treatment. In another experiment, 3-mo-old high-fat-induced obese mice receiving short-term EGCG treatment (3.2 g/kg diet, 4 wk) had decreased mesenteric fat weight and blood glucose compared with high-fat-fed control mice (P < 0.05). Our results indicate that long-term EGCG treatment attenuated the development of obesity, symptoms associated with the metabolic syndrome, and fatty liver. Short-term EGCG treatment appeared to reverse preexisting high-fat-induced metabolic pathologies in obese mice. These effects may be mediated by decreased lipid absorption, decreased inflammation, and other mechanisms.

A Behavior Based Approach To Improving Safety In A Manufacturing Facility, Laura G. Kreager

Modern Psychological Studies

Behavior-based safety has flourished in organizations committed to changing and improving their safety programs. Through the programs, organizations are focusing their attention on the individual behaviors of employees to decrease the number of accidents occurring within the organization; thus, improving the safety record. The current study analyzes the effect of a behaviorally based safety intervention, comprised of four components, on the number of accidents occurring at a local manufacturing facility over a time span of 18 months. Based on a timeseries analysis, using an ARIMA model, results indicated a statistically significantly reduction in the number of accidents by 75.6% (p < .05) after the implementation of the intervention.

Impacts Of Land Use, Anthropogenic Disturbance, And Harvesting On An African Medicinal Liana, Lauren Mcgeoch, Ian Gordon, Johanna Schmitt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

African medicinal plant species are increasingly threatened by overexploitation and habitat loss, but little is known about the conservation status and ecology of many medicinal species. Mondia whitei (Apocynaceae, formerly Asclepiadaceae), a medicinal liana found in Sub-Saharan Africa, has been subject to intensive harvesting and habitat loss. We surveyed M. whitei in Kakamega Forest, the largest of three remnant Kenyan forests known to contain the species. In 174 100 m2 plots, we quantified the status of M. whitei and investigated its relationships with land use, disturbance and harvesting. With average adult densities of 101 plants/ha, M. whitei is not locally …
