A new ruthenium complex, [RuBrCl(C28H32N2)], has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR-spectroscopy and a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The Ru atom in this complex is best described as having a considerably distorted octa-hedral coordination environment with the arene occupying three coordination sites. Two further coordination sites are occupied by chloride and bromide ligands, while the sixth site is occupied by the carbene. The carbene portion of the ligand is a benzimidazole ring. This ring is connected to the C6H4C(CH3)3 arene by a CH2 bridge. This leads to a system with very little apparent strain. …

Feature Preserving Continuous Level-Of-Detail For Terrain Rendering, Lucas Jay Shinkovich
Feature Preserving Continuous Level-Of-Detail For Terrain Rendering, Lucas Jay Shinkovich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the vast processing power of modern GPUs, rendering terrain geometry at sufficient frame rates is still a very difficult task. This is mainly due to the large terrain data that must be managed, displayed and modified at high frame rates. While traditional level-of-detail algorithms for terrain utilize most of the CPU and a fraction of the GPU, our algorithm exploits the parallel processing capabilities of the GPU. We represent the terrain geometry as a set of geometry images which allows us to apply image processing techniques to preserve terrain features during level-of-detail transitions and to render terrain that has …

Recently improved ECH2O soil moisture sensors have received significant attention in many field and laboratory applications. Focusing on the EC-5 sensor, a simple and robust calibration method is proposed. The sensor-to-sensor variability in the readings (analog-to-digital converter (ADC) counts) among 30 EC-5 sensors was relatively small but not negligible. A large number of ADC counts were taken under various volumetric water contents (?) using four test sands. The proposed two-point a-mixing model, as well as linear and quadratic models, was fitted to the ADC – ? data. Unlike for conventional TDR measurements, the effect of sensor characteristics is lumped into …

We combined high-resolution remote sensing techniques with detailed study of the physical and faunal characteristics at point locations in different seafloor environments within the Oyster Bay- Cold Spring Harbor Complex, the Huntington-Northport Bay Complex, and Port Jefferson Harbor, including Conscience Bay. High-resolution backscatter and bathymetric maps created by side scan and multibeam sonar surveys were used to classify the seabed into provinces. Samples for macrofauna and sediment properties were collected within each province to provide "ground truth" for the acoustic maps. Oyster Bay, Huntington Harbor, and Port Jefferson Harbor were sampled at 40, 38, and 50 locations, respectively, with two …

Physicochemical characteristics of lipid-based foods depend, among other factors, on the microstructure and the characteristics of the lipid network formed during crystallization. The objective of this study, was to evaluate the effect of the addition of sunflower oil waxes on the crystallization and melting behavior of anhydrous milk fat (AMF), a lipid with a low content of palmitic and trans-fatty acids. The crystallization and melting behavior of AMF alone and with the addition of 0.25 and 0.5% of waxes was studied using a differential scanning calorimeter. The morphology of the crystallized samples was evaluated with a polarized light microscope. The …

Females of Anopheles gambiae Giles normally oviposit in a large number of fresh, small, sunlit, and spatially spread temporary pools. Such pools are associated with lower levels of predation compared to large, longer-lasting habitats. We compared oviposition levels on preferred (water collected from natural anopheline larval habitats) and non-preferred (distilled water) aqueous substrates by gravid females that contained different densities of conspecific eggs or early and late instar larvae. The presence of conspecific larvae, but not eggs, had a positive or negative effect on the ovipositional responses of gravid An. gambiae females, depending on the quality (preferred or non-preferred by …

On Representations Of Quantum Groups Uq(Fm(K,H)), Xin Tang, Yunge Xu
College of Health, Science, and Technology
We construct families of irreducible representations for a class of quantum groups Uq(fm(K,H). First, we realize these quantum groups as hyperbolic algebras. Such a realization yields natural families of irreducible weight representations for Uq(fm(K,H)). Second, we study the relationship between Uq(fm(K,H)) and Uq(fm(K)). As a result, any finite-dimensional weight representation of Uq(fm(K,H)) is proved to be completely reducible. Finally, we study the Whittaker model for the center of U q(fm(K,H)), and a classification of all irreducible Whittaker representations of Uq(fm(K,H)) is obtained. © 2008 Australian Mathematical Society.
