Ground Arthropod Community Survey In Grassland, Shrubland, And Woodland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This data set contains records for the numbers of selected groups of ground-dwelling arthropod species and individuals collected from pitfall traps at 4 sites on the Sevilleta NWR, including creotostebush shrubland, both black and blue grama grasslands, and a pinyon/juniper woodland. Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

Effect Of Long-Term Nitrogen Fertilization On Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated With A Dominant Grass In A Chihuahuan Desert Grassland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2005), Andrea Porras-Alfaro, Robert Sinsabaugh, Don Natvig
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
We studied the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in a semiarid grassland and the effect of long-term nitrogen (N) fertilization on this fungal community. Root samples of Bouteloua gracilis were collected at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (New Mexico, USA) from control and N-amended plots that have been fertilized since 1995. Small subunit rDNA was amplified using AMF specific primers NS31 and AM1. The diversity of AMF was low in comparison with other ecosystems, only seven operational taxonomic units (OTU) were found in B. gracilis and all belong to the genus Glomus. The dominant OTU was closely related to …

Water Balance Modeling Project At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Vegetation Plot Data (1995-1998), Bruce Milne, Yuelong Yang
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
The water balance vegetation plots were part of a larger water balance monitoring project at the Sevilleta LTER. The plots were designed to measure the percent cover of photosynthetic/transpiring (green) plant species at specific sites where time domain reflectometry (TDR) probes and weather stations were already installed. In 1995, there were three sites (Field Station, Deep Well and Rio Salado). A 30m x 30m plot was installed at each site, and collection of vegetation data commenced in July 1995. Percent cover (green) and species identities were recorded monthly at a representative sample of 1m square quadrats within each plot.

Ocotillo Plant Demography Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, 2003, Joanna Redfern, William Pockman, Tim Lowrey
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
In order to better understand the life history of Ocotillo, a re-sampling of Ocotillo plants originally marked and studied in 1991 was done in the southeast corner of the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. All plants measured in 1991 were re-censused and re-tagged with new numbers. Measurements of plant height and branch number were repeated along with measurements pertaining to overall plant size.
Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear Permeation Flow Of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymers, Zhenlu Cui
Small Amplitude Oscillatory Shear Permeation Flow Of Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymers, Zhenlu Cui
College of Health, Science, and Technology
We investigate the small amplitude oscillatory shear permeation flow (SAOSPF) of cholesteric liquid crystal polymers (CLCPs) using a mesoscopic model obtained from the Doi kinetic theory for flows of CLCPs. We model the system by Stokes hydrodynamic equations coupled with orientational dynamics and study the frequency-locked solutions of the system by employing a coarsegrained approach. The leading order solutions exhibit boundary layers of thickness of the order of the cholesteric pitch in low frequency regimes but in the order of 1/?w in high frequency regimes, where ! is the plate driven frequency. The response of CLCPs has been calculated. Viscoelastic …
Continuum Theory Of Carbon Phases, A. Umantsev, Z. Akkerman
Continuum Theory Of Carbon Phases, A. Umantsev, Z. Akkerman
College of Health, Science, and Technology
We constructed a continuum theory of carbon phases based on the Landau theory of phase transitions. Our theory ties up many seemingly unrelated data on the carbon system. Transformations between graphite, diamond, and liquid-carbon are described by the Landau-Gibbs free-energy which depends on two order parameters: crystallization and structural. The barrier-height and gradient-energy coefficients were calculated from the nucleation data obtained in the studies of diamond/graphite and diamond/liquid-carbon systems. The boundary of the absolute stability of the graphitic phase was interpreted as the spinodal point of the free-energy, which allowed us to calculate the pressure dependence of the barrier-height coefficient. …
Ground-Truthing Satellite Imagery With Phenological Observations: Visual Observations From Grasslands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, Kristin Vanderbilt, Bethany Bradley
Ground-Truthing Satellite Imagery With Phenological Observations: Visual Observations From Grasslands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, Kristin Vanderbilt, Bethany Bradley
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Phenology is the study of recurring natural phenomena. The seasonal "greening-up" and "greening-down" of dominant vegetation can be used as a predictor for a variety of processes and variables at local to global scales. The use of satellites to monitor land surface phenology is important for understanding local and regional ecosystem variability, identifying change over time, and potentially predicting ecosystem response to short and long-term changes in climate. However, the relationship between how phenology is expressed on the ground and how it is interpreted from satellites is poorly understood because phenological stages do not always correspond well to changes in …

Responses of plant communities to mammalian herbivores vary widely, due to variation in plant species composition, herbivore densities, forage preferences, soils, and climate. In this study, we evaluated simultaneous changes in 11 plant assemblages on the 100,000 ha Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR) in central New Mexico, USA, over a 20-yr period following removal of the major mammalian herbivores (livestock and prairie dogs) in 1972-1975. Thirty study sites were established in 1976 within and outside of the SNWR, and these sites were resampled in 1986 and 1996 using line transect methods. At the landscape scale, repeated measures ANOVA of percentage …
Hydraulic Constraints On Two Life History Stages Of Larrea Tridentata In A Chihuahuan Desert Creosote Shrubland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2002-2003), Juliana Medeiros
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Maintaining high rates of water loss during times of high resource availability could allow establishing woody desert perennials to grow quickly by allowing them to take advantage of the fleeting but abundant monsoonal moisture typical of warm deserts like the Chihuahuan. However, a plant cannot endlessly increase water loss in order to grow faster --there are hydraulic constraints on rates of water loss. The hydraulic properties of each particular plant xylem and soil microsite, as well as the AR:AL absorbing root area to transpiring leaf area ratio) interact to set limits on rates of water loss. If transpiration rates become …

Long-Term Core Site Grasshopper Dynamics For The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2013), David Lightfoot
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Grasshoppers are important animals in semi-arid environments, both as herbivores and as food resources for higher level consumer animals. Grasshoppers tend to be numerous and represented by many species in semi-arid environments, especially in desert grasslands. Grasshopper species range from environmental specialists, to environmental generalists. Grasshopper populations tend to change considerably from year to year, often in response to annual variation in rainfall and plant production. The purpose of this study was to monitor grasshopper species composition and abundance over a period of many years from black grama grassland, blue grama grassland, creosotebush shrubland, and pinyon/juniper woodland environments at the …
Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang
Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang
College of Health, Science, and Technology
Let µ(?(1)) denote the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional nonabelian Lie algebra ?(1) over a base field K. We study the maximal abelian ad-nilpotent (mad) associative subalgebras and finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of µ(?(1)). We first prove that the set of noncentral elements of µ(?(1)) admits the Dixmier partition, µ(?(1))?K=? 5i=1 ?i, and establish characterization theorems for elements in ?i, i=1,3,4. Then we determine the elements in ?i, i=1,3, and describe the eigenvalues for the inner derivation ad Bx,x??i, i=3,4. We also derive other useful results for elements in ?i, i=2,3,4,5. As an application, we find all framed mad subalgebras of …
How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers
How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers
Faculty Articles
We posit that contexts in emerging markets are different from developed country contexts. These contextual differences necessitate the development and deployment of unique capabilities and strategies on the parts of companies operating there. While all emerging market countries are not uniform across all of the characteristics described below, there is a great deal of commonality on these conditions within the group of emerging market countries, by virtue of their similar stages of development. Thus, companies that develop their skill sets and products/services in one emerging market are likely to more easily be able to extend them to others. Conversely, there …

William Bartram, The Search For Nature's Design: Selected Art, Letters, And Unpublished Writings., Thomas Hallock, Nancy Hoffmann
Faculty Books
An important figure in early American science and letters, William Bartram (1739–1823) has been known almost exclusively for his classic book, Travels. William Bartram, The Search for Nature’s Design presents new material in the form of art, letters, and unpublished manuscripts. These documents expand our knowledge of Bartram as an explorer, naturalist, artist, writer, and citizen of the early Republic. Part One, the correspondence, includes letters to and from Bartram’s family, friends, and peers, establishing his developing consciousness about the natural world as well as his passion for rendering it in drawing. The difficult business of undertaking scientific study and …
A Construction Of A Hopf Algebra For Manifolds: A Construction Of A Hopf Algebra For Manifolds Of 2 And 3 Dimensions With Applications., Leon Hardy
Faculty Books
We assume the combinatorial viewpoint of Joni and Rota in using Hopf algebras to separate and build an object from its fundamental pieces. We construct the Hopf algebra of polynomials and determine its endomorphisms and automorphisms. Then, the set of orientable, low-dimensional manifolds with and without boundary can be given a Hopf algebraic structure with the connected sum as the multiplication and the disjoint union as the addition. The automorphisms prove useful when we consider the Prime Factorization Theorems of low-dimensional manifolds. Factorization systems of this type often enable one to classify manifolds in a given dimension. When the classification …

(Re)Using Women: The Image Debate In Early Modern Allegory, Sandi J. Hubnik
English Dissertations - Archive
This project is concerned with how, during the reign of Elizabeth I, early modern writers use the representations of certain allegorical women characters to discuss the issues central to the image debate and the need for proper interpretation. The relationship between women and images makes such a movement possible. The well-established misogynistic discourse on women lends itself well to the reconstruction of the discourse concerning images; both express a certain amount of anxiety over the outward sign - the body - and its unreliability as a conduit for moral or spiritual purity. Early modern Protestant and Catholic writers often use …

A Study Of Diamond Nanoparticles, Rajarshi Chakraborty
Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Diamond nanoparticles grown previously by Hot Filament Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition have been characterized by utilizing Atomic Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and X Ray Diffraction. AFM and SEM data shows increase in nanoparticle size with growth period ranging from about 20 nm for 15 minutes to 200 nm for 105 minutes growth. Raman spectra have been analyzed by using optical phonon confinement in nanometer size crystals. Based on the SEM, Raman spectroscopy and XRD data, we present clear evidence for nanometer size (10-200 nm) diamond particles in CVD-grown diamond thin films.
Chicken And Dumplings: The Motif Of Food In Appalachian Literature, Cynthia L. Sibley Thayer
Chicken And Dumplings: The Motif Of Food In Appalachian Literature, Cynthia L. Sibley Thayer
English Dissertations - Archive
Food is an important element of literature. It can help to establish setting, conflicts, a hero and heroine, relationships with nature and other humans, comfort to readers as well as characters in fictional texts, class structure, and survival of a culture. For the reader, Appalachian literature invokes a sense of home, memories, and family. Appalachian food is also a catalyst for infamous stereotyping of the culture in the United States. The names of Hawthorne and Thoreau represent New England; Twain and Faulkner represent the South; and authors like Robert Morgan, Silas House, and Charles Frazier represent Appalachia putting it on …
Aircraft Conceptual Design - An Adaptable Parametric Sizing Methodology, Gary John Coleman
Aircraft Conceptual Design - An Adaptable Parametric Sizing Methodology, Gary John Coleman
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Aerospace is a maturing industry with successful and refined baselines which work well for traditional baseline missions, markets and technologies. However, when new markets (space tourism) or new constrains (environmental) or new technologies (composite, natural laminar flow) emerge, the conventional solution is not necessarily best for the new situation. Which begs the question "how does a design team quickly screen and compare novel solutions to conventional solutions for new aerospace challenges?" The answer is rapid and flexible conceptual design Parametric Sizing. In the product design life-cycle, parametric sizing is the first step in screening the total vehicle in terms of …

Constrained Dynamics Approach For Motion Synchronization And Consensus, Divya Bhatia
Constrained Dynamics Approach For Motion Synchronization And Consensus, Divya Bhatia
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
In this research we propose to develop constrained dynamical systems based stable attitude synchronization, consensus and tracking (SCT) control laws for the formation of rigid bodies. The generalized constrained dynamics Equations of Motion (EOM) are developed utilizing constraint potential energy functions that enforce communication constraints. Euler-Lagrange equations are employed to develop the non-linear constrained dynamics of multiple vehicle systems. The constraint potential energy is synthesized based on a graph theoretic formulation of the vehicle-vehicle communication. Constraint stabilization is achieved via Baumgarte's method. The performance of these constrained dynamics based formations is evaluated for bounded control authority. The above method has been …
Ideal Cycle Analysis Of A Regenerative Pulse Detonation Engine For Power Production, Rafaela Bellini
Ideal Cycle Analysis Of A Regenerative Pulse Detonation Engine For Power Production, Rafaela Bellini
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Over the last few decades, considerable research has been focused on pulse detonation engines (PDEs) as a promising replacement for existing propulsion systems with potential applications in aircraft ranging from the subsonic to the lower hypersonic regimes. On the other hand, very little attention has been given to applying detonation for electric power production. One method for assessing the performance of a PDE is through thermodynamic cycle analysis. Earlier works have adopted a thermodynamic cycle for the PDE that was based on the assumption that the detonation process could be approximated by a constant volume process, called the Humphrey cycle. …
Rogerian Democratic Pedagogy And Its Implications In Composition Studies For Students, Service Learning, And The Public Writing Movement, Stacy Fussell Thorne
Rogerian Democratic Pedagogy And Its Implications In Composition Studies For Students, Service Learning, And The Public Writing Movement, Stacy Fussell Thorne
English Dissertations - Archive
In this project, I articulate a democratic pedagogical model, which is based onand modified from the pedagogical theories of the American psychologist, Carl Ransom Rogers (1902-1987). Rogerian Democratic Pedagogy (RDP) is based on Rogers' claim that learning that is student directed, and involves the learner emotionally as well as cognitively, is more effective than the traditional, teacher-directed model of education. RDP focuses on empowering composition students to have a sense of ownership of their process of learning and their class, to be responsible and active learners, and to participate as citizens in a democracy by completing public writing projects that …

This research examines the influences which led to the beginnings of The Rag, an underground newspaper in Austin, TX, that would last for 11 years and give voice to a generation of young adults that were intent on changing society. Students and young adults were seeking ways to voice their frustrations with government policies and newspapers were a major source of information for most of the American public. However, the large city dailies failed to adequately cover issues important to the youth culture. This historical analysis delves into big-picture influences such as the counterculture, the Students for a Democratic Society …
Stress Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beam With I-Section, Jitesh Cherukkadu Parambil
Stress Analysis Of Laminated Composite Beam With I-Section, Jitesh Cherukkadu Parambil
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The advantage of material properties and flexibility of choosing material have made composite materials a primary preference for structural application. Unlike isotropic materials, the parametric study of composite beams for optimized design is complicated due to high number of parameters involved in designing like lay-up sequence, and layer configuration. Moreover, the limitations of FEA techniques in designing have created a need for an analytical closed-form solution for stress analysis of laminated composite beams. The objective of this study focuses on the development of an analytical method for stress analysis of composite I-beam. This method includes the structural response due to …

Development Of Amphiphilic Biodegradable Photoluminescent Polymers, Shengyuan Zhou
Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
The development of amphiphilc block copolymers have been attracted much attention due to their potential use in drug delivery and targeting. Less research work focused on their prospective application as fluorescent imaging probes. Although some research reported fluorescent materials encapsulated in amphiphilc micelles has provided significant opportunities for biological labeling and imaging in biomedical fields, these fluorescent materials, such as organic dyes and quantum dots, suffer from photobleaching, cytotoxicity and lack of biodegradability. A novel and ideal amphiphilic biodegradable photoluminescent polymeric micelle was developed, which will open new avenues for biomedical filed. The objective of this reseach was to develop …
