The severity of Cushing's Syndrome (CS) depends on the duration and extent of the exposure to excess glucocorticoids. Current measurements of cortisol in serum, saliva and urine reflect systemic cortisol levels at the time of sample collection, but cannot assess past cortisol levels. Hair cortisol levels may be increased in patients with CS, and, as hair grows about 1cm/month, measurement of hair cortisol may provide historical information on the development of hypercortisolism. We attempted to measure cortisol in hair in relation to clinical course in six female patients with CS and in 32 healthy volunteers in 1cm hair sections. Hair …

Multi-National Licensure In Landscape Architecture: Searching For Its Impact On The Profession, Madhavi B. Sonar
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
This thesis summarizes the knowledge base and understanding of key informants regarding multi-national licensure in landscape architecture, a topic made timely because of the increase in international practice by landscape architects, and differences in the profession's standards and regulations globally. It also examines the potential impacts of multi-national licensure on the profession. To accomplish this, the thesis examines licensure practices in both landscape architecture and architecture (which is more familiar with issues of international practice,) and it focuses on implications of the issues on professional practice and academic practice in landscape architecture. This research is based on the hypothesis that the …

Providing quality urban spaces including plazas and pedestrian malls encourages use of the Central Business District (CBD) and stimulates a vibrant atmosphere for casual strolling, window shopping, and browsing (Rubenstein, 1992). Dallas, Texas, which in many people's minds defines the term `automobile city', has developed and implemented a visionary plan since the early 1990s' for using light rail as a tool for economic growth and community development. Thus, Dallas Area Rapid Transit's (DART's) starter system of light rail opened in June 1996, and a city that grew up with the automobile embraced transit as an integral part of its future …

Each individual perceives the world differently and attains knowledge in distinct ways (Rapoport 1977). With regard to perception about specific places, some individuals function as "insiders." This means their perceptions are engaged with place through daily experiences familiarizing them with the landscape. Others function as "outsiders," ¬¬unconcerned with or unaware of landscape events, thereby perceiving only the surfaces meaning of such events (Dearden 1984, Craik 1970, Bourassa 1991). One example of this dichotomy between insiders and outsiders can be found among design experts and non-experts. Design experts, such as landscape architects, architects, and planners, are directly involved with landscape aesthetics …

Green roofs are not a new technology. The first recorded green roof was the Hanging Gardens of Babylon built by King Nebuchadnezzar for his wife Amyitis who missed her lush homeland (Osmundson 1999). However, since the late 1990s, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social significance beyond its seemingly simplistic description. The term has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and urban heat islands, for large scale mitigation of storm water run-off, and for maximum utilization of urban land (Cantor 2008). This research examines perceptions about extensive green roofs held by developers, city officials, architects, …

Field studies were done of the responses of Glossina palpalis palpalis in Côte d'Ivoire, and G. p. gambiensis and G. tachinoides in Burkina Faso, to odours from humans, cattle and pigs. Responses were measured either by baiting (1.) biconical traps or (2.) electrocuting black targets with natural host odours. The catch of G. tachinoides from traps was significantly enhanced (∼5x) by odour from cattle but not humans. In contrast, catches from electric targets showed inconsistent results. For G. p. gambiensis both human and cattle odour increased (>2x) the trap catch significantly but not the catch from electric targets. For …

Methodological Development In Nationalism, Ethnicity And Migration, Victor Asal, Stephen Shellman, Tiffiany O. Howard
Political Science Faculty Research
In terms of methods, researchers working in nationalism, ethnicity, and migration have used everything from broad historical narratives to automated coding and event data analysis. Traditionally, narratives were the dominant methodological approach implemented to study these areas. The narrative approach allowed for explication of groundbreaking theoretical arguments generating testable hypotheses, the deep inspection of particular areas of the world or particular issues with richness of detail and process, and the investigation of a small number of cases. In addition, the use of formal theory to explore issues related to nationalism, ethnicity, and migration also has a long tradition. Formal theory …

The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei, is the most important pest of coffee throughout the world, causing losses estimated at US 500 million/year. The thrips Karnyothrips flavipes was observed for the first time feeding on immature stages of H. hampei in April 2008 from samples collected in the Kisii area of Western Kenya. Since the trophic interactions between H. hampei and K. flavipes are carried out entirely within the coffee berry, and because thrips feed by liquid ingestion, we used molecular gut-content analysis to confirm the potential role of K. flavipes as a predator of H. hampei in an organic …

Objectives: This study sought to examine the relationship between proximal aortic dilation and systemic vascular function in men with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). Background: Proximal aortic dilation in subjects with BAV is associated with structural and functional abnormalities in the ascending aorta. Methods: We studied 32 men (median age 31 years [range 28 to 32 years]) with nonstenotic BAV categorized into 2 subgroups according to proximal ascending aorta dimensions (nondilated ≤35 mm and dilated ≥40 mm, respectively). Sixteen healthy men were studied as control subjects. Flow-mediated dilation in response to hyperemia (a marker of endothelial dysfunction) and carotid-femoral pulse wave …

Noninvasive measures of limb muscle strength are quite useful in preclinical translational studies that use mouse models of muscle disease, peripheral nerve disease, and movement disorders. The present study uses a simple protocol for assessing both inter-trial and inter-examiner reliability for two noninvasive methods of assessing limb strength in dystrophic (mdx) and wild type mice. One method, termed the whole body tension (WBT) method or escape test, measures the total phasic pulling tension exerted by the fore- and hindlimbs while a mouse attempts to escape into a darkened tube. Another procedure, termed the four limb wire grid holding test, measures …

Two correlative approaches to the challenge of ecological niche modeling (genetic algorithm, maximum entropy) were used to estimate the potential global distribution of the invasive fruit fly, Bactrocera invadens, based on associations between known occurrence records and a set of environmental predictor variables. The two models yielded similar estimates, largely corresponding to Equatorial climate classes with high levels of precipitation. The maximum entropy approach was somewhat more conservative in its evaluation of suitability, depending on thresholds for presence/absence that are selected, largely excluding areas with distinct dry seasons; the genetic algorithm models, in contrast, indicate that climate class as partly …

Infectious diseases affecting livestock and human health that involve vector-borne pathogens are a global problem, unrestricted by borders or boundaries, which may be exacerbated by changing global climate. Thus, the availability of effective tools for control of pathogen vectors is of the utmost importance. The aim of this article is to review, selectively, current knowledge of the chemical ecology of pathogen vectors that affect livestock and human health in the developed and developing world, based on key note lectures presented in a symposium on "The Chemical Ecology of Disease Vectors" at the 25th Annual ISCE meeting in Neuchatel, Switzerland. Start Making Sense! Introducing Students To Karl Weick’S Principles Of Organizational Communication, John S. Seiter, Deborah Dunn
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Although rambunctious school children throwing paper airplanes are often credited as the premier creators of chaos in classrooms, we recommend that instructors turn the tables. Specifically, we suggest that professors, armed with their own paper airplanes, create chaos in their classrooms as a means of teaching students about Karl Weick's principles of organizational communication. In keeping with Weick's notions that communication and organizing are required to reduce uncertainty, and that members of organizations are interdependent, this exercise presents students with an ambiguous problem that requires communication, organizing, and sense-making to solve.

The process of strain selection is an important step in the development of insect pathogens for biological control. Bioassays were conducted in the laboratory to evaluate the efficacy of different methods of inoculation using Rhipicephalus pulchellus Gerstäcker (Acari: Ixodidae) as a model. Initially, an oil-based formulation of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) titred at 109 conidia ml-1 was applied to R. pulchellus adults using a Burgerjon spray tower or a microapplicator. Inoculation by microapplicator yielded poor results (25.0% tick mortality) compared to Burgerjon's spray tower (52.3% tick mortality), although the mean number of fungal conidia on R. pulchellus adults …

Bdf-Like Methods For Nonlinear Dynamic Analysis, S. Dong
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
We present several time integration algorithms of second-order accuracy that are numerically simple and effective for nonlinear elastodynamic problems. These algorithms are based on a general four-step scheme that has a resemblance to the backward differentiation formulas. We also present an extension to the composite strategy of the Bathe method. Appropriate values for the algorithmic parameters are determined based on considerations of stability and dissipativity, and less dissipative members of each algorithm have been identified. We demonstrate the convergence characteristics of the proposed algorithms with a nonlinear dynamic problem having analytic solutions, and test these algorithms with several three-dimensional nonlinear …

Pinon Juniper Net Primary Production Quadrat Data From The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: 1999-2001, Esteban Muldavin
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This three-year study at the Sevilleta LTER was designed to monitor net primary production (NPP) across two distinct ecosystems: pinon/juniper woodland (P) and juniper savannah woodland (J). Net primary production (NPP) is a fundamental ecological variable that measures rates of carbon consumption and fixation. Estimates of NPP are important in understanding energy flow at a community level as well as spatial and temporal responses of the community to a wide range of ecological processes. While measures of both below- and above-ground biomass are important in estimating NPP, this study focused on estimating above-ground biomass production (ANPP).To measure ANPP (i.e., the …

Rainfall Manipulation Study Vegetation Data From The Chihuahuan Desert Grassland And Creosote Shrubland At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2003-2011), William Pockman
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
The overall goal of the rainfall manipulation project is to understand the coupled ecological and hydrological responses of a grassland, shrubland and a mixed grass-shrub vegetation community to extended periods of increased or decreased rainfall. Rainfall manipulation plots have been established in each of these three vegetation communities in the Five Points area of Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. In each vegetation community, three control plots, three drought treatment plots, and three water addition plots have been installed, each approximately 10 x 15 m in size. In each plot, vertical profiles of soil moisture probes have been installed under each cover …

Precipitation Chemistry Data For The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1989-Present), Douglas I. Moore
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This data set includes precipitation chemisty from 20 funnel collectors on the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Variables measured include volume, NO3-N, NH4-N, SO4, Cl, Na, K, Ca, Mg, and PO4. The sample interval depends on the frequency of significant precipitations events. Field collection of precipitation chemistry samples occurred as soon after a significant precipitation event as possible (usually within a week after the event). In some cases collection of precipitation chemistry samples occurred more often than meteorlogical station samples (summer, fall), and sometimes less often (winter, spring). Precipitation chemistry samples were collected only when there was enough sample to …
