Effect Of Quality Of Wheat And Maize Flour In Tempura Batter, Chew Kwee Tan
Effect Of Quality Of Wheat And Maize Flour In Tempura Batter, Chew Kwee Tan
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Tempura batters are stand-alone systems that are not further breaded. They provide a protective coating which can range in texture from crispy/crunchy to cake-like. Recipes for batter systems are adjusted empirically, and the choice of ingredients, especially flour, will determine the quality and acceptability of coating. This study aims to characterise wheat and maize flours that would optimise fried tempura quality, and to study their effect on behaviour of batters, and quality of fried products. In aqueous ethanol, results showed RVA to be useful to characterise wheat flours for batter applications. There is a close relationship between flour attributes and …

"Everything Beautiful Is Far Away": (Collected Short Stories): Embedded Autobiography, Estrangement And The (Re)Discovery Of Self In Contemporary Short Fiction, Lucy Charlotte Durneen
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis comprises a collection of short stories entitled Everything Beautiful is Far Away, supported by a commentary which explores ideas of self within the short story and locates my creative writing practice within the field of contemporary short fiction and theories of autobiography. The collection Everything Beautiful is Far Away is made up of eleven stories that experiment with a variety of forms, from rhyming flash fiction to the novella, and fairy tale to psychotherapy, and as a substantial example of original creative practice stands as the main body of my thesis. The accompanying critical element is divided into …

A Narrative In Relief - The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The groups of painters in England who experimented with new visual expressions of modernity between 1910 and 1915 are the subject of this historiographical research. More precisely, the accounts of Vorticism, Bloomsbury post-Impressionism and the modern art of painters associated with Sickert, (principally the Camden Town Group), have been critically examined over a forty year period in order to trace the narrative of their place in contemporary art criticism and their entry into histories of what soon became the recent past. This textually-based methodology has produced an insight into the forces acting upon the critical reception of a particular period …
The Plymouth Community Justice Court And The Concepts Of Multi-Agency Problem-Solving And Community Engagement: A Process Review, Michelle Jolley
The Plymouth Community Justice Court And The Concepts Of Multi-Agency Problem-Solving And Community Engagement: A Process Review, Michelle Jolley
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The emergence of Community Justice Courts (CJC) in the UK is a relatively new approach to doing justice. Founded upon the broad principles of community justice they present a challenge to traditional criminal justice practice. This thesis is based on a qualitative ethnographic study, employing an interpretivist methodology to develop knowledge and understanding of the Plymouth CJC. Furthermore it sought to review three specific areas, firstly the operations of the CJC and whether these processes varied from those of traditional magistrates’ court, secondly the development and operationalisation of problem-solving multi-agency working, and thirdly the identification and implementation of community engagement …

The invasive larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) is the most important pest of farm-stored maize in Africa. It was introduced into the continent from Mesoamerica in the late 1970s and by 2008 had spread to at least 18 countries. Classical biological control using two populations of the predator Teretrius nigrescens Lewis achieved long-term and cost effective control in warm-humid areas, but not in cool and hot-dry zones. The present study investigated the phylogenetic relationships between geographical populations of the predator. Ten populations of T. nigrescens were studied using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR), sequence analysis of …

Belonging to a size category that makes them vulnerable to a wide variety of predators, spiders have evolved a bewildering array of anti-predator adaptations, which can be clustered under two broad categories, primary and secondary defence. Primary defences are ploys by which the spider avoids provoking pursuit by, and interaction with, the predator. Camouflage and masquerade are especially common examples. Secondary defences come into play once an interaction with a predator is under way, and these are the defences that have been most thoroughly studied. However, elements of anti-predator defence may often be integrated into other aspects of the spider's …

Dissemination Of Entomopathogenic Fungi Using Busseola Fusca Male As Vector, Nguya K. Maniania, Elizabeth Ouna, Peter Ahuya, Brigitte Frérot, Anne Emmanuelle Félix, Bruno Le Ru, Paul André Calatayud

The stem borer, Busseola fusca (Fuller), is an important pest of maize Zea mays L. and sorghum Sorghum bicolor (L.) in eastern and southern Africa. To control this pest, biological control methods including the use of entomopathogenic fungi are being considered. The pathogenicity of one isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. and one isolate of Beauveria bassiana Bals. (Vuill.) were first tested on different developmental stages of B. fusca including eggs, neonate, 2nd and 3rd-instar larvae. Both fungal isolates were pathogenic to all the stages tested. However, differences in mortality were observed among larvae that hatched from treated egg masses. …
Flexibility In The Foraging Strategies Of Spiders, Ximena J. Nelson, Robert R. Jackson
Flexibility In The Foraging Strategies Of Spiders, Ximena J. Nelson, Robert R. Jackson
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Although many spiders build prey-capture webs, spider foraging strategies include species that, instead of building webs, deploy silk in other ways for prey capture. Additionally, there are species that capture prey, either by ambush or by active pursuit, without making notable use of silk in the process. There are striking examples of predatory specialisation from spiders, particularly among the Salticidae, suggesting that assumptions about adaptive trade-offs, in which the small nervous systems of spiders might constrain their cognitive or sensory abilities, need to be carefully evaluated. Predatory versatility, whereby an individual spider adopts a conditional strategy with which it classifies …

Oviposition Preferences Of The African Wild Silkmoth, Gonometa Postica Walker (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) On Different Substrates, Ken O. Fening, Esther N. Kioko, Jones M. Mueke, Suresh K. Raina

Gonometa postica Walker (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) is currently being utilised for commercial wild silk production in Eastern Kenya. The oviposition preferences of female G. postica on four substrates in a net-sleeved cage was studied in the laboratory in the long and short rainy seasons in 2007 for two generations, i. e. early (late March to April) and late flights (late September to October) of the moth. The first generation moths laid the highest number of eggs on net sleeves followed by plastic pot, twigs and wooden plank, whereas the second generation moths preferred wooden plank and net sleeves over the plastic …
