Soil Nutrient Distributions In Chihuahuan Desert Grasslands And Shrublands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1989), Anne Cross
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Vegetation throughout the southwestern United States has changed from perennial grassland to woody shrubland over the past century. Previous studies on the development of 'islands of fertility' focused primarily on only the most limiting, plant-essential element, soil nitrogen (N). The research presented here addressed the question of whether other plant-essential elements, namely phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), showed similar concentration gradients under the desert shrub Larrea tridentata (creosotebush). It also examined whether the spatial distribution of N, P, and K differed from that of essential, but non-limiting nutrients, namely calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S), and non-essential elements, namely …
Calibration Of The Atlas Intermediate Tile Calorimeter, Heather Brianna Brown
Calibration Of The Atlas Intermediate Tile Calorimeter, Heather Brianna Brown
Physics Theses - Archive
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland is the world's largest particle collider. UTA contributes to the ATLAS detector at the LHC. There are many detection systems within ATLAS, and the hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) is the main interest of the HEP group at UTA. A piece of the TileCal was constructed at UTA and is called the Intermediate Tile Calorimeter (ITC).The ITC is installed in a service region of the detector and the ITC behave differently from other TileCal cells. Due to a different geometry, the ITC cells require special attention and a different method of calibration. …

On The Electronic And Geometric Structure Properties Of Silicon-Germanium Nanoclusters: A Hybrid Density Functional Theoretic Study, Sarah Elizabeth Duesman
Physics Theses - Archive
Hybrid density functional theory has been used to study the electronic and geometric structure properties of silicon-germanium nanoclusters containing up to eight atoms. The hybrid functional used is Becke's three-parameter exchange functional with the exchange-correlation functional of Lee, Yang, and Parr (B3LYP). A large 6-311G(3df,3pd) basis set as implemented in the suite of software Gaussian 03/09 has been used for accurate determinations of all properties of the SimGen (m + n [lesser or equal to] 8) nanoclusters. For each cluster, various different isomers have been studied to arrive at a global minimum energy structure, and for each of these isomers …

Measurement Of Single Diffractive Differential Cross Section (Dσ/(D|T|)) At √(S ) = 1.96 Tev Using The D0 Forward Proton Detectors, Arnab Kumar Pal
Measurement Of Single Diffractive Differential Cross Section (Dσ/(D|T|)) At √(S ) = 1.96 Tev Using The D0 Forward Proton Detectors, Arnab Kumar Pal
Physics Dissertations - Archive
The analysis described in this dissertation uses the Forward Proton Detectors (FPD) installed at the D0 detector in the Tevatron collider at Fermilab to measure the single diffractive differential cross section (d&sigma/(d|t|)) at sqrt(s ) = 1.96 TeV center of mass energy. The single diffractive events are selected using the D0 central detector and the FPD system and |t| of the forward proton are measured using the FPD system. The analysis presents the measurement of the differential cross section of the single diffractive events as a function of |t| in the range 0.2 < |t| < 1.3 GeV2. The differential cross section measurement is within the theoretical and experimental expectations. The total single diffractive cross section (&sigma_sd ) in the region 0.0 < |t| < 1.3 GeV2 is found to be 9.682 ± 0.048(stat.) ± 1.219(syst.) mb.

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
Major research areas from 1958 to 2009 were examined in the four journals of the Academy of Management indexed by the online database Business Source Complete (through EBSCO). Research topic areas are identified that (1) have received the most scholarly attention over the years, (2) have fallen out of favor, and (3) have re-emerged after falling out of favor. Possible explanations are discussed for why certain management research topics gain or lose popularity over time and identified directions for future research.
Victorian Children's Book Illustrations, Melinda Muscato
Victorian Children's Book Illustrations, Melinda Muscato
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
In the nineteenth century, as society in Victorian Britain adjusted to the effects of urbanization and industrialization, social roles began to shift, changes that were reflected in the children’s book illustrations of Randolph Caldecott, Henry J. Ford, and Beatrix Potter. This time period was considered the golden age of children’s book illustrations due to a large boom in both number and quality available. These children’s books illustrators had a lasting impact on culture and aesthetics and reinforced the social constructions of the new urban middle class. Randolph Caldecott’s illustrations of nursery rhymes gave new interpretations to familiar texts, some of …

In the current international environment characterized by globalization and regionalization, the importance of the transport and logistics system integration which is the basis of regional economic cooperation has been highlighted. Northeast Asian Region which covers 5.7% of the total world’s area and has around 25.8% of the total world’s population has been one of the most active regions of economic and social development in recent two decades largely due to the emergence of China and Russia in the world market. However, different from the EU which provides an excellent example of economic and transport integration, the transport and logistics system …
The Exploration Of Neurophysiological Spike Train Data Using Visual Analytics, Jared Somerville
The Exploration Of Neurophysiological Spike Train Data Using Visual Analytics, Jared Somerville
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Neuroscientists are increasingly overwhelmed by new recordings of the nervous system. These recordings are significantly increasing in size due to new electrophysiological techniques, such as multi-electrode arrays. These techniques can simultaneously record the electrical activity (or spike trains) from thousands of neurons. These new datasets are larger than the traditional datasets recorded from single electrodes where fewer than ten spike trains are usually recorded. Consequently, new tools are now required to effectively analyse these new datasets. This thesis describes how techniques from the field of Visual Analytics can be applied to detect specific patterns in spike train data. These techniques …

Plasticidad Sináptica En La Enfermedad De Alzheimer: Hacia Una Detección Temprana Utilizando Protocolos No-Invasivos, Daniel A.C. Montoya
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
It has been proposed that Alzheimer's disease is a synaptic failure associated with subtle memory loss during the early stages of the disorder. If this is the case, it should prove useful to elucidate the mechanisms of synaptic plasticity during early stages of the condition. On the other hand, Long Term Potentiation, one of the best-known mechanisms of synaptic plasticity has been recently confirmed absent in Alzheimer's disease patients. This link may lead to focus efforts in early detection of synaptic failure and development of preventive approaches aiming to improve synaptic plasticity. Here we review some new evidence in the …

: A new methodology is developed to analyze existing monitoring networks. This methodology incorporates different aspects of monitoring, including vulnerability/probability assessment, environmental health risk, the value of information, and redundancy reduction. A conceptual framework for groundwater quality monitoring is formulated to represent the methodology‚Äôs context. Relevance vector machine RVM plays a basic role in this conceptual framework, and is employed to reduce redundancy and to create probability map of contaminant distribution, and accordingly to estimate the expected value of sample information. Disability adjusted life years approach of the global burden of disease is used for quantifying the health risk consequences. …
Motivational Factors In The Placebo Response: The Role Of Effort And Intrinsic Motivation On Well-Being In Therapeutic Interventions, Linda Carolina Gaitan-Sierra
Motivational Factors In The Placebo Response: The Role Of Effort And Intrinsic Motivation On Well-Being In Therapeutic Interventions, Linda Carolina Gaitan-Sierra
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
One of the most interesting aspects of human beings is their ability to choose a course of action and strive to achieve it. When participating in therapeutic interventions involving physical activities, people may allocate different amounts of effort, persistence and commitment to succeed in them. The reason for this difference lies in their motivation. The present thesis focuses on the energising of behaviour, that is, the differential effort and motivation that people put into therapeutic activities. Placebo responses are generally explained by the mechanisms of response expectancy, conditioning and motivational concordance. Findings presented in this thesis partially supported motivational concordance, …
