Paediatrics Publications

Objective To examine the contribution of adolescents' sleep problems and tiredness to psychological symptoms after accounting for shared risk and psychological co-morbidity. Methods Secondary analyses of cross-sectional data on 12-16-year-old (N = 980) adolescents without chronic illness, functional limitation, or developmental delay. Adolescents rated sleep problems, tiredness, and psychological symptoms. Parents provided information about risk factors, adolescent tiredness, and psychological symptoms. Results Prior to accounting for psychological co-morbidity, most sleep variables were significant correlates of adolescent-, but not parent-rated, psychological symptoms. After accounting for psychological co-morbidity: nightmares were associated with adolescent-rated anxiety/depression; sleeping more than others was associated with adolescent-rated …

Peripheral Pariah Or Regional Rebel? The Allied Democratic Forces And The Uganda/Congo Borderland, Lindsay Scorgie Jan 2011

Peripheral Pariah Or Regional Rebel? The Allied Democratic Forces And The Uganda/Congo Borderland, Lindsay Scorgie

Faculty Publications

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) have inflicted damage and insecurity on the Rwenzori region of Uganda for over a decade and, although their strength has diminished, still constitute a threat. This article argues that it is inadequate to see the ADF primarily as an internal Ugandan rebel group. Rather, the group's cross-border dimension with the Democratic Republic of the Congo should be conceptualised as a transnational phenomenon. A borderland analytic framework offers the best means of understanding the movement.

Larrea Seedling Monitoring Study At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1999- ), Douglas I. Moore

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

The germination rate of creosote (Larrea tridentata) on the Sevilleta appears to be very low. During the early years of the LTER project it was attempted to quantify such germination through the use of seedling plots which were monitored on a bi-annual basis (spring and fall). During the period from 1989 through 1992 there were no creosote seedling that germinated on the monitoring plots. In 1999 a rather sizeable population of small seedlings was observed in one quite localized area in the vicinity of Five Points. This rather large number of individuals in one very limited area raised several questions:1. …

Pinon-Juniper Dendrometer, Height, And Crown Area Measurements At Cerro Montosa, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (2006-2009), Esteban Muldavin

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Allometry is a standard method of determining biomass and Net Primary Production of many trees. One of the standard variables used in such allometric regressions is bole diameter. On straight trunk trees measurements at breast height (DBH) taken using a DBH tape is adequate for quantifying changes in diameter over time. However, in scrub forests such as the Pinon Juniper PJ woodlands, common on the Sevilleta, both the pinon and particularly the junipers are relatively short and multi-trunked so that measurements must be taken near the ground and the consistency between measurements often lead to erroneous growth analysis. To reduce …

Small Business Entrepreneurships In The United States, Ram Mohan R. Yallapragada, Mohammad Bhuiyan

College of Business and Economics

A small business entrepreneur is defined as an individual who establishes and manages a business for the principal purpose of profit and growth. Small businesses constitute an increasingly large proportion of businesses generally in the United States' economy. They account for 39 per cent of the United States' gross national product and create two out of every three new jobs in our economy. Seven important prerequisites are identified as being necessary for successfully operating a small business. These include adequate financing, qualified personnel, efficient operation and production, marketing and sales, customer service, information management and administration. One of the most …

Correlations Of Physiological Activities In Nocturnal Cheyne-Stokes Respiration, Alexander Umantsev, Alexander Golbin

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We have conducted a power-spectrum-density (PSD) analysis of the distinct sleep stages of a previously diagnosed nocturnal Cheyne-Stokes respiration patient (NCSR) and studied the correlations of different physiological activities. This is the first study where the correlations were analyzed separately for different sleep stages and the influence of arousals was completely eliminated. Mathematical analysis of the polysomnographical records revealed clear indicators of the disorder in the form of large peaks in a very-low frequency range of f ? 0.02 Hz. We have shown existence of the significant entrainment of the cerebral and cardiac activities with respiration during different stages of …

Coparenting : A Conceptual And Clinical Examination Of Family Systems., James P. Mchale, Kristin M. Lindahl

Faculty Books

The past 15 years have seen the explosive growth of a new field of study that has come to be known as coparenting (McHale & Sullivan, 2008). Since the turn of the new millennium, fresh new insights and thoughtful empirical research studies explicitly guided by coparenting frameworks have made their way into the peer-reviewed literature almost every few months. But what is coparenting, and why is there a need for an entire volume taking stock of such a relatively new field of study? Broadly speaking, coparenting is an enterprise undertaken by two or more adults who together take on the …

My Child And My Life: Sacrificial Obligation And Chaucer, Gary Scott Montano Jan 2011

My Child And My Life: Sacrificial Obligation And Chaucer, Gary Scott Montano

English Dissertations - Archive

Medieval literature demonstrates that Christians of that era took their Bible seriously, particularly the Old Testament account of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. For them, the story was both fascinating and perplexing. Not only was Abraham one of the most revered figures, but he was also one of the most frustrating. He was admired for his ability to obey God's directive to sacrifice Isaac, but because he does so without displaying an ounce of emotion, that admiration is often coupled with irritation. How could a father as loving as Abraham remain expressionless and emotionless as he raised the knife to kill …

Extension Of A Progressive Failure, Energy Dissipation, Composite Tailoring Concept To A Healing Configuration, Shailesh Jayant Divey

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

A composite failure tailoring concept that results in a yield type response under tension has been proposed, modeled, and experimentally verified in prior research. The concept capitalizes upon a sequential, progressive failure of a set of redundant load paths of tailored strength and length. It has been shown in prior publications that the concept is functional and by comparison with experimental results that the analytical models of response developed are accurate. The limits of performance of the proposed tailoring concept have recently been investigated via a parametric study using one of the response models developed and significant improvements have been …

Preliminary Design Of A Pressurization System For Small Bipropellant Rocket Engines, Steven Stanley Jan 2011

Preliminary Design Of A Pressurization System For Small Bipropellant Rocket Engines, Steven Stanley

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

A study was conducted on the feasibility of developing a device or system that would improve the performance of small, bipropellant rockets through pressurization of the propellants. Due to the limitations in the space industry, namely high development costs and resistance to change, the new approach needed to be as simple and robust as possible. After reviewing several different potential methodologies, a concept was developed from first principles based on small gas turbine engine fuel injection approaches. The concept is simple and has heritage in the field of gas turbine engines, but it is new for the field of rocket …

Analysis Of Pulse Detonation Turbojet Engines, Ronnachai Vutthivithayarak Jan 2011

Analysis Of Pulse Detonation Turbojet Engines, Ronnachai Vutthivithayarak

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Research over the last two decades has shown the potential advantages of pulse detonation engines (PDEs) over existing aero-engines in terms of improved thermodynamics efficiency, improved thrust performance, simplicity of design, and exibility to operate over a wide speed range. The inherently unsteady characteristic of PDEs makes it difficulty to analyze and evaluate their performance. The conventional method that relies on steady-state assumptions cannot be directly applied. PDE studies have to employ unsteady gasdynamics behavior. In this study, the thermodynamic cycle of a PDE, which can be called the ZND cycle, is theoretically analyzed. A parametric analysis of turbojet PDEs …

Mode Truncation Analysis In Forced Response Of Structural Dynamics, Sravan Kumar Neela Jan 2011

Mode Truncation Analysis In Forced Response Of Structural Dynamics, Sravan Kumar Neela

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Mode truncation in Modal analysis is an important problem and should be addressed with an effective truncation criterion. The truncation errors are considered as error forces and these error limits can be used to select the number of modes in the solution. Usually frequency based approach is used in selection of modes. But this method ignores the error forces in truncation and not effective if the cutoff frequency is greater than highest natural mode. An effective criterion would limit error forces, thereby minimizing errors in the response solution. To overcome the inaccuracies due to truncation, Mode Truncation Augmentation was used …

Influences Of Decision-Making: A Qualitative Analysis Of Primiparae's Birthing Plan Decisions, April Nicole Blount

Communication Theses - Archive

In the U.S., the rate of delivery by cesarean section has increased more than 50% since 1996. On the other hand, home births increased 5% since 2005 and continue to be on the rise. Previous research is limited in examining the factors that influence the choices surrounding the birthing plan. Existing research indicates that few women ask questions and make an effort to learn about birthing options as they prepare for delivery. The common perception is that medical events dictate what will eventually happen; thus, responsibility is relinquished to the healthcare provider. This study used 12 in-depth interviews with primiparae, …

Korean American Matters And Identity In Korean American Novels, Seung-Won Kim Jan 2011

Korean American Matters And Identity In Korean American Novels, Seung-Won Kim

English Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation focuses on the intersection between the maturation of young Korean American protagonists in fiction and the writers' own growing-up of ethnic identity as Korean descendants. I analyze nine Korean American novels written by Sook Nyul Choi, An Na, and Linda Sue Park. I approach my selected texts in two different ways. First, I explore the different exigencies of their writing projects by investigating their biographical backgrounds. Second, I examine how these authors differently represent Korean American matters such as history, community, and culture in order to create stories of Korean or Korean American protagonists' coming-of-age through their writing …

Buckling Analysis Of Thin Plates With Or Without A Hole Under Arbitrary Boundary Conditions Using The Galerkin Method, Srider Thirupachoor Comerica Jan 2011

Buckling Analysis Of Thin Plates With Or Without A Hole Under Arbitrary Boundary Conditions Using The Galerkin Method, Srider Thirupachoor Comerica

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

This thesis demonstrates how to find the critical buckling load value of thin plates with or without a hole under different boundary conditions using the Galerkin method. The use of symbolic software is essential due to the lengthy computations involved because of the complexity of the problems. Firstly, the lateral deflection of the plate is expressed in a series of polynomials each of which satisfies the given boundary conditions. Then by using the Galerkin method, the coefficients of these polynomials are found and with the help of symbolic algebra system, the matrices for the corresponding eigenvalue problem are built from …

A One Dimensional Dry Friction Microconveyor Platform: Modelling And Analysis Of Micropart Motion Due To Surface Excitation, Moshin Rizwan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Many approaches are used for micropart manipulation ranging from individual pick and place to manipulation through a workcell comprising of arrays of actuators. Existing approaches provide discrete actuation and have limitations on the lower bound on the size of the micropart to be handled. In this research, the active surface concept for non-contact micropart manipulation is investigated. The active surface deformation is generated by a set of controlled microactuators and provides for continuous micromanipulation while alleviating limitations of existing approaches. The drastic increase of surface area to volume ratio from macroscale to microscale requires the consideration of surface forces (such …

No Longer Estranged: Women, Science, Science Fiction, Christy Tidwell

English Dissertations - Archive

Feminist science fiction (SF) and feminist science studies share common concerns--the gendered perception of science and women's place in the sciences among them--but the two fields are rarely considered together. This failure to connect the two fields may be explained in part by the ongoing divide between the sciences and the humanities; it may be further exacerbated by the ghettoization of SF within literary studies. I gather together feminist SF texts, literary theories of feminist SF, and feminist science studies in order to add to the scholarship of each individual field as well as make a case for the value …
