Toward An Ontology Of Design Philosophy In Landscape Architecture: Developing A Personal Design Philosophy, Rhonda Erin Fields
Toward An Ontology Of Design Philosophy In Landscape Architecture: Developing A Personal Design Philosophy, Rhonda Erin Fields
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
This thesis uses qualitative inquiry to examine the process for developing a personal design philosophy. The larger goal of the study seeks to understand the universal and particulars of design as philosophy with the intent to develop an ontology for design philosophy in landscape architecture. "Design is a crucial factor in the relation between beings and worlds as they shape each other, yet as a philosophy, design itself hardly exists" (Willis, 2009). Willis and others in the field of design philosophy suggest that design as a philosophy has only recently begun to be studied. Further, to begin an understanding of …

Background: Pre-adult stages of malaria vectors in semi-arid areas are confronted with highly variable and challenging climatic conditions. The objective of this study was to determine which larval habitat types are most productive in terms of larval densities in the dry and wet seasons within semi-arid environments, and how vector species productivity is partitioned over time. Methods: Larval habitats were mapped and larvae sampled longitudinally using standard dipping techniques. Larvae were identified to species level morphologically using taxonomic keys and to sub-species by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methods. Physical characteristics of larval habitats, including water depth, turbidity, and presence of …

Eberhardt School of Business Faculty Articles
A new construct, called social and emotional development (SED) which is defined as the desirable, sustainable enhancement of personal capacity to utilize emotional information, behaviors, and traits to facilitate desired social outcomes, is presented. The SED model, which includes self awareness, consideration of others, connection to others and impacting change, links the social emotional intelligence and competence development literatures. The purpose of SED is to provide a framework to understand and facilitate increasing student social and emotional capacity to recognize emotional cues, process emotional information, and utilize emotional knowledge to adapt to social challenges in higher education.

The nucleus pulposus is an avascular and aneural tissue that has significant influence on the homeostasis and overall function of the intervertebral disc. The nucleus pulposus is comprised of a heterogeneous population of cells including large notochord cells and smaller chondrocyte-like cells. Loss of notochord cells has been correlated with the pathogenesis of disc degeneration and consequently, it has been hypothesized that regeneration of the disc could be mediated by notochord cells. Attempts to grow and expand notochord cells in vitro have thus far been limited by cell availability and ineffective culturing methodologies. As a result, co-culturing techniques have been …

Differentiated trophoblast cell lineages arise from trophoblast stem (TS) cells. To date such a stem cell population has only been established in the mouse. The objective of this investigation was to establish TS cell populations from rat blastocysts. Blastocysts were cultured individually on a feeder layer of rat embryonic fibroblasts (REFs) in fibroblast growth factor-4 (FGF4) and heparin supplemented culture medium. Once cell colonies were established REF feeder layers could be replaced with REF conditioned medium. The blastocyst-derived cell lines, in either proliferative or differentiated states, did not express genes indicative of ICM-derived tissues. In the proliferative state the cells …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Subjects With Acute Unilateral Neck Pain And Restricted Motion: A Prospective Case Series, Gary Fryer, James Hughes Adams
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Of Subjects With Acute Unilateral Neck Pain And Restricted Motion: A Prospective Case Series, Gary Fryer, James Hughes Adams
All KCOM Faculty Publications
Background context: Zygapophyseal joint injury and inflammation have been proposed as causes of acute benign spinal pain, but this etiology has not been investigated. Purpose: To investigate the presence of periarticular tissue inflammation and zygapophysial joint synovitis in the cervical region using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in subjects with acute unilateral cervical pain and limited motion (acute "crick in the neck" <48 hours from onset), as well as the feasibility of recruiting these subjects. Study design/setting: Three-month case series in a university setting and private radiology clinic. Patient sample: Five subjects (three women and two men; mean age, 31.6 years; standard deviation [SD], 12.4). Methods: Each subject was examined by a researcher experienced in manual medicine to assess active range of neck movement and the side and symptomatic segmental level of pain. Subjects then underwent a blinded MRI investigation, which included sagittal images through the entire neck and cervical spine and axial images from C2 to T1. Evidence of capsule or periarticular edema and joint space T2 increase was recorded and scored. Additionally, signs of muscle edema, alignment, disc disease, facet arthritic change, and spinal stenosis were recorded. Results: Subjects presented with mean current pain of 4.8 (SD, 1.6; visual analog scale, 0-10), worst pain since onset of 7.0 (SD, 0.7), and duration of symptoms of 12.4 hours (SD, 14.1). The plane of active motion most commonly limited was rotation to the painful side, followed by side bending to the painful side and extension. No MRI findings demonstrated clear evidence of synovial effusion or inflammation around the joints of the cervical spine. In some individuals, signs of muscle edema, altered alignment, disc and facet arthrosis, and spinal stenosis were noted, but these did not appear to be related to the side of pain or symptomatic level. Conclusions: No evidence of cervical joint inflammation was detected, and more sensitive imaging methods may be required to detect inflammatory changes in or around the cervical joints of subjects with acute benign neck pain. Recruitment of subjects with acute "crick in the neck" pain (<48 hours duration) is difficult but feasible over a long data collection period. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This research evaluates the effect of sunflower oil wax (SFOw) addition on the crystallization behavior and functional properties of anhydrous milk fat (AMF). Induction times of nucleation, melting behavior, microstructure of crystals, and hardness were evaluated for samples of pure AMF and AMF with 0.1 and 0.25% SFOw. Results from this research show that the addition of waxes induced the onset of crystallization of AMF by inducing its nucleation, as evidenced by decreased induction times of nucleation and the formation of smaller crystals. Crystal growth after tempering was also promoted by waxes, and significantly harder lipid networks were obtained. Results …

Coyote Scat Survey In The Chihuahuan Desert Grasslands And Creosote Shrublands At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico (1992-2004), Robert Parmenter
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
This study measured the population dynamics of coyotes in the grasslands and creosote shrublands of McKenzie Flats, Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge. The study was begun in January, 1992, and continued quarterly each year. Â Coyotes were sampled via scat counts along the roads of McKenzie Flats during winter, spring, summer, and fall of each year. The entire road transect was 21.5 miles in length. Scat counts over a week period (number of scats/mile/day) in each season along the roads were used to calculate the densities of coyotes (number of coyotes per square kilometer). Results from 1992 to 2002 indicated that …
Litter Fall Collection Study In Pinyon-Juniper, Cottowood, And Spruce-Fir-Aspen Forests At The Sevilleta Nwr, Bosque Del Apache Nwr, And The Cibola National Forest, New Mexico (1992-1993), Robert Parmenter
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
The litterfall study was designed to assess the quantity of biomass (leaves, twigs, reproductive materials) falling from tree species in different ecosystem types. Three study sites selected were:  (1) the pinyon-juniper woodland site near Cerro Montoso on the Sevilleta NWR; (2) the cottonwood forest LTER site along the Rio Grande at Bosque del Apache NWR; and (2) the old-growth spruce-fir-aspen site near South Baldy in the Magdalena Mountains (Cibola National Forest).  The study was conducted over two years (1992-1993) to compare litterfall rates and quantities among sites, seasons and years.

2003 Prescribed Burn Effect On Chihuahuan Desert Grasses And Shrubs At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico: Shrub Recovery Study (2003-2009), Burton Pendleton
Sevilleta LTER Program Data
Disturbance from fire can affect the abundance and distribution of shrubs and grasses in arid ecosystems. In particular, fire may increase grass and forb production while hindering shrub encroachment. Therefore, prescribed fires are a common management tool for maintaining grassland habitats in the southwest. However, Bouteloua eriopoda (black grama), a dominant species in Chihuahuan Desert grassland, is highly susceptible to fire resulting in death followed by slow recovery rates. A prescribed fire on the Sevilleta National Wildlife refuge in central New Mexico in 2003 provided the opportunity to study the effects of infrequent fires on shrub invasion in this region. …
