Maternal use of certain drugs during pregnancy can result in transient neonatal signs consistent with withdrawal or acute toxicity or cause sustained signs consistent with a lasting drug effect. In addition, hospitalized infants who are treated with opioids or benzodiazepines to provide analgesia or sedation may be at risk for manifesting signs of withdrawal. This statement updates information about the clinical presentation of infants exposed to intrauterine drugs and the therapeutic options for treatment of withdrawal and is expanded to include evidence-based approaches to the management of the hospitalized infant who requires weaning from analgesics or sedatives. Water Efficient Urban Landscapes - Integrating Different Water Use Categorizations And Plant Types, Hongyan Sun, Kelly Kopp, Roger Kjelgren Feb 2012

Water Efficient Urban Landscapes - Integrating Different Water Use Categorizations And Plant Types, Hongyan Sun, Kelly Kopp, Roger Kjelgren

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

Little research has examined water requirements of entire irrigated urban landscapes integrating different types of plants. Three landscape treatments integrating different types of plants—woody, herbaceous perennial, turf—and putative water use classifications—mesic, mixed, xeric—were grown in large drainage lysimeters. Each landscape plot was divided into woody plant, turf, and perennial hydrozones and irrigated for optimum water status over 2 years and water use measured using a water balance approach. For woody plants and herbaceous perennials, canopy cover rather than plant type or water use classification was the key determinant of water use relative to reference evapotranspiration (ETo) under well-watered conditions. For …

Open Source Classroom Polling (Interactive Response) Facility, Ronald I. Greenberg

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The contents of the UNIX directory resulting from unzipping the .zip file provide a demonstration of a simple polling facililty that instructors can use in class any time that students have access to a web browser. This is a good way to have students work problems and see to what extent they are converging towards correct answers.

Unlike other polling facilities, this one is completely free without any restrictions on number of simultaneous users, etc. It also allows a feature most polling facilities do not in that it may be used for completely free-form answers, and the instructor can still …

Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity On The Development And Fecundity Of Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), A. Tamiru, E. Getu, B. Jembere, T. Bruce

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is one of the most important insect pests attacking maize and sorghum in Ethiopia. Recent studies have indicated that the pest is spreading to new locations where it was not reported before. In the current study, laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the combined effect of different levels of relative humidity and temperature regimes on the development and fecundity of C. partellus, as these physical factors are known to play an important role in the life cycle of insects and adaptability to local climate. Developmental time, longevity, potential fecundity and realized …

The Flipper Debate: Teaching Intercultural Communication Through Simulated Conflict, Jennifer A. Peeples, Bradford J. Hall, John S. Seiter Jan 2012

The Flipper Debate: Teaching Intercultural Communication Through Simulated Conflict, Jennifer A. Peeples, Bradford J. Hall, John S. Seiter

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Although Western cultures tend to view dolphins as friendly and benevolent, in Japanese fishing communities, "iruka" (dolphins) are often viewed as food or pests. These perspectives have led to intense conflicts between Japanese fishermen and activists from the west. This article presents an exercise that simulates intercultural conflict by asking students to role-play the parts of Japanese fishers or Western filmmakers and, along the way, sheds light on concepts such as ethnocentrism, value differences, and world views.

Rural China, Paul Marsnik Jan 2012

Rural China, Paul Marsnik

Forum, 2012 Spring

In the past 20 years, about 200 million Chinese have moved from the countryside into large cities. Most of them have done so in order to work in factories. After spendeng 5+ years visiting factories in big cities in China, I began to wonder what kind of life these factory workers were leaving behind. So I went out to the country, in rural China, and spent some time with the people who still live there. I created a 30 minute video/slide show highlighting my adventures. We can watch the video and then discuss issues relating to China.
