What Are The Effects Of A Sheet Energy Strip On Maximal Exercise Performance?, Nancy Rico

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

One of the newest ways to consume energy is by taking Sheet Energy Strips. This new supplement was recently introduced to the market in July 2011. These strips are placed on the tongue and dissolve 100 mg of caffeine per strip and B vitamins into the body. It claims to have the same effects as energy drinks but with no sugar, calories, or after crash effects.

Influence Of –Carrageenan, Pectin, And Gelatin On The Physicochemical Properties And Stability Of Milk Protein-Stabilized Emulsions, M. Tippetts, Silvana Martini Feb 2012

Influence Of –Carrageenan, Pectin, And Gelatin On The Physicochemical Properties And Stability Of Milk Protein-Stabilized Emulsions, M. Tippetts, Silvana Martini

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

This study evaluated the stability of bilayer emulsions as a function of secondary layer composition and pH. Primary emulsions were formulated with 5% soybean oil, 1% protein from nonfat dry milk (NDM) powder as emulsifier and ι-carrageenan (ι-carr), low-methoxyl pectin (LMp), high-methoxyl pectin (HMp), or gelatin as secondary layers. ζ-Potential values increased for each emulsion as the pH decreased, with ι-carr emulsions being consistently more negatively charged than primary emulsions and significantly more stable. ζ-Potential values were not always correlated to emulsion stability. Gelatin secondary emulsions at pH 3 and HMp secondary emulsions at pH 7 were unstable due to …

Identification And Quantification Of Flavor Attributes Present In Chicken, Lamb, Pork, Beef, And Turkey, Curtis Maughan, Silvana Martini Feb 2012

Identification And Quantification Of Flavor Attributes Present In Chicken, Lamb, Pork, Beef, And Turkey, Curtis Maughan, Silvana Martini

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The objectives of this study were to use a meat flavor lexicon to identify and quantify flavor differences among different types of meats such as beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and turkey, and to identify and quantify specific flavor attributes associated with “beef flavor” notes. A trained descriptive panel with 11 participants used a previously developed meat lexicon composed of 18 terms to evaluate the flavor of beef, chicken, pork, turkey, and lamb samples. Results show that beef and lamb samples can be described by flavor attributes such as barny, bitter, gamey, grassy, livery, metallic, and roast beef. Inversely related to …

The Effect Of Caffeine On Blood Lactate After A Maximal Exercise Test., Heidi Holloway Feb 2012

The Effect Of Caffeine On Blood Lactate After A Maximal Exercise Test., Heidi Holloway

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Numerous studies exist on the use of caffeine for both endurance exercise and short-term, higher intensity exercise. Consumption of caffeine is known to help athletes train harder and longer. This study examined the effectiveness of the caffeine supplement NoDoz on blood lactate and selected indicators of maximal cardiorespiratory fitness in male and female UTA students.

The Effect Of Exercise Intervention On Community-Dwelling Seniors' Fitness Level., Samuel Hoops Feb 2012

The Effect Of Exercise Intervention On Community-Dwelling Seniors' Fitness Level., Samuel Hoops

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Amongst the many health problems plaguing the elderly, falling is of major concern. Approximately 30% of community-dwelling seniors older than 65 endure an injurious fall each year with the most serious outcome reported as death. Research shows that physical activity can be utilized as a preventive measure in reducing the occurrence and risk of falls by improving or maintaining balance and activities of daily living (i.e. getting up and down from a seated position, reaching for seatbelt, combing one’s hair, dressing oneself, going to the bathroom, lifting items, walking the mall, climbing stairs).

Effects Of Warm-Up On Anaerobic Performance., Andrea Prempeh Feb 2012

Effects Of Warm-Up On Anaerobic Performance., Andrea Prempeh

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Warm-up is a common practice among athletes and those who partake in physical activity. According to McMillian et al. (2006) warm- up increases muscle and tendon elasticity, stimulates blood flow to the periphery, increases body temperature, and enhances coordinated body movement.

Academic Achievement In Relation To Improved Physical Activity, Cassie Duff Feb 2012

Academic Achievement In Relation To Improved Physical Activity, Cassie Duff

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents require 60 minutes or more of physical activity per day. In 2006, only 3.8 percent of elementary schools, 7.9 percent of middle schools, and 2.1 percent of high schools offered students daily physical education or its equivalent for the entire school year. Research shows that keeping physical education programs does not have an adverse effect on academics. This research study was conducted to see how adding the recommended daily physical activity would affect academic achievement.

The Acute Effects Of Microhydrin On Blood Lactate During Exercise Test., Hoa Nguyen Feb 2012

The Acute Effects Of Microhydrin On Blood Lactate During Exercise Test., Hoa Nguyen

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

During an exercise bout, aerobic energy comes from oxidative phosphorylation. When the intensity exceeds the body’s ability to utilize oxygen, the body switches over to anaerobic sources for energy production. Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is now formed through the breakdown of phosphocreatine to replenish ATP and the conversion of pyruvate to lactate following the breakdown of glycogen and glucose. The lactate decreases the pH level intramuscularly causing an environment that is not optimal for exercise and leads to exhaustion and decreased performance. Microhydrin, a supplement developed to release reduced hydrogen or hydride ions (H-) into the blood stream acting as an …

Warming-El Nino-Nitrogen Deposition Experiment (Wenndex): Meteorology Data (4/30/2007 - 8/5/2009), Scott Collins

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Humans are creating significant global environmental change, including shifts in climate, increased nitrogen (N) deposition, and the facilitation of species invasions. A multi-factorial field experiment is being performed in an arid grassland within the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) to simulate increased nighttime temperature, higher N deposition, and heightened El Niño frequency (which increases winter precipitation by an average of 50%). The purpose of the experiment is to better understand the potential effects of environmental change on grassland community composition and the growth of introduced creosote seeds and seedlings. The focus is on the response of three dominant species, all …
