First-Principles Studies On N-Type And P-Type Doping In Cuprous Oxide, Qiong Bai
First-Principles Studies On N-Type And P-Type Doping In Cuprous Oxide, Qiong Bai
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
We have performed studies on n-type and p-type cuprous oxide with and without doping by first principles methods. Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) is used for the geometry optimization. The total energy and the final electronic structure calculations are conducted using the nonlocal screened Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid density functionals approach for cuprous oxide. The HSE hybrid density functionals overcome the shortcoming of GGA, which gives a much reliable value of the band gap. The formation energies of native point defects in undoped cuprous oxide have been studied by HSE hybrid functional theory in two conditions, which are vacuum based condition and …
Properties Of Concrete With Tire Derived Aggregate And Crumb Rubber As A Ligthweight Substitute For Mineral Aggregates In The Concrete Mix, Gideon Momanyi Siringi
Properties Of Concrete With Tire Derived Aggregate And Crumb Rubber As A Ligthweight Substitute For Mineral Aggregates In The Concrete Mix, Gideon Momanyi Siringi
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Scrap tires continue to be a nuisance to the environment and this research proposes one way of recycling them as a lightweight aggregate which can substitute for mineral aggregates in concrete. Aggregates derived from scrap tires are often referred to as Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA). First, the focus is how much mineral aggregate can be replaced by these waste tires and how the properties of concrete are affected with the introduction of rubber. This is being mindful of the fact that for a new material to be acceptable as an engineering material, its properties and behavior has to be well …
Growth Mechanism And Interface Effects On Microstructure Of Perovskite-Type Barium Titanate-Based Epitaxial Films, Jie He
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
This work was motivated and focused on the growth mechanism, microstructures and interfaces of barium titanate, BaTiO3 (BTO), based epitaxial thin films. Transimission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution TEM (HRTEM), electron diffraction (ED) have been mainly employed in this study for microstructure investigations of BTO-based epitaxial thin films with the assistance of other materials characterization methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Nanoindentation testing, etc. As a basic studying model, epitaxial BTO films were first deposited on the (001) MgO substrate using RF magnetron sputtering to provide fundamental knowledge of the film growth for BTO based thin …

Syntheses, Characterization, And Applications Of Injectable Citrate-Based Mussel-Inspired Biodegradable Adhesive (Icmba) Polymers And Hydrogels, Mohammadreza Mehdizadeh
Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Tissue adhesives are increasingly gaining more popularity in various areas of biomedical applications. They are utilized as surgical adhesives, as a replacement or adjunct to conventional wound closure and bleeding control techniques such as suturing, as well as in other applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery.Unfortunately, the existing surgical adhesives are not ideal for wet tissue adhesion required in many surgeries such as those for internal organs. Developing surgical adhesives with strong wet tissue adhesion, controlled degradability and mechanical properties, and excellent biocompatibility has been a significant challenge. Herein, learning from nature, we report a one-step synthesis of …
Alternatives To Standard Minimum Parking Requirements: A Study Of Best Practices And Its Application To Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rachel May, Andrew Whittemore
Alternatives To Standard Minimum Parking Requirements: A Study Of Best Practices And Its Application To Dallas, Texas, Sarah Rachel May, Andrew Whittemore
Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive
Development in Dallas would be more compact and multi-modal if the city refocuses its parking policies away from parking quantity to parking quality. To validate this hypothesis, this professional report compares and contrasts parking policies and best practices of municipalities that have adopted alternatives to standard minimum parking requirements to draw suggestions to present to the City of Dallas. Current parking policy in Dallas has a simple minimum parking requirement (MPR) based on the size and type of use, calculated by recommended industry standards circa 1950 and adjusted through the mid 1980's as automobile ownership has increased. This has made …
Learning From Los Ramblas, Matthew Crowley
Learning From Los Ramblas, Matthew Crowley
Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive
This report seeks to create a catalog of urban design elements that can be used as a professional reference for practicing planners. It will use the Ramblas, a series of streets in Barcelona as the area of study to understand how urban design elements can be successful. The historical evolution of the streets and how they developed into what they are today is presented. It is not suggested that the Ramblas would be recreated in another context but instead elements would be understood for their value and use within their context. Those elements will be catalogued to create a set …

Reservoir Simulations Of Low-Temperature Geothermal Reservoirs, Madhur Ganesh Bedre
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The eastern United States generally has lower temperature gradients than the western United States. However, West Virginia, in particular, has higher temperature gradients compared to other eastern states. A recent study at Southern Methodist University by Blackwell et al. has shown the presence of a hot spot in the eastern part of West Virginia with temperatures reaching 150°C at a depth of between 4.5 and 5 km. This thesis work examines similar reservoirs at a depth of around 5 km resembling the geology of West Virginia, USA. The temperature gradients used are in accordance with the SMU study.;In order to …

Evaluating The Ability Of Different Weak Acids When Combined With Hydrogen Peroxide To Develop Latent Fingerprints On Post-Fired Cartridge Cases, Casey Nicholas Oleksa
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This study examined the effectiveness of different weak acids in developing fingerprints on different types of cartridge cases when combined with hydrogen peroxide due to a process known as chemical etching. Chemical etching involves an oxidation-reduction in which the metal is oxidized by the acid. Three types of cartridge cases were used: bi-metal, brass, and aluminum. Five different acids of varying pKa were used: acetic, citric, lactic, maleic, and propanoic. Each acid was made up to a different concentration to reflect the same pH as 1.0M H+ ions. Phase I involved testing each acid with each case printed after firing …

Histologic Findings In Biopsies/Resection Specimens From The Small Intestine With Special Emphasis On Celiac Disease: Experience From A Developing Country In South Asia, Huma Arshad, Zubair Ahmad
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Biopsies from the small intestine especially the duodenum are now being performed much more frequently than in the past. The most frequent reason for performing duodenal biopsies is to evaluate for malabsorption. In the last few years, increased awareness has resulted in more biopsies sent for evaluation of malabsorption, especially celiac disease (CD). In the duodenum, features of malabsorption (increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, villous shortening, and atrophy) were the most common histologic finding seen in 63.4% of cases. Serum tTG levels were available for correlation in 52.8% of cases. In patients with confirmed CD, 53.4% were MARSH IIIb, and 29.5% were …

Ammonia (NH3) is an important trace gas species in the atmosphere that can have negative impacts on human, animal, and ecosystem health. Agriculture has been identified as the largest source of NH3, specifically livestock operations. NH3 emissions from a commercial dairy in California were investigated during June 2008. Cattle were held in open-lot pens, except for young calves in hutches with shelters. Solid manure was stored in the open-lot pens. Liquid manure from feed lanes was passed through a solids settling basin and stored in a holding pond. Passive sensors and open-path Fourier transform infrared spectrometers (OP-FTIR) were deployed around …

Oplostomus haroldi Witte belongs to a unique genus of afro-tropical scarabs that have associations with honey bee colonies, from which they derive vital nutrients. Although the attributes of the honey bee nest impose barriers to communication among nest invaders, this beetle still is able to detect conspecific mates for reproduction. Here, we show, through behavioral studies, that cuticular lipids serve as mate discrimination cues in this beetle. We observed five steps during mating: arrestment, alignment, mounting, and copulation, and a post-copulatory stage, lasting ~40-70 % of the total mating duration, that suggested mate guarding. Chemical analysis identified the same nine …

Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) production in western Kenya is severely affected by insect pests, resulting in poor yields in spite of the growing demand for the commodity. One of the key constraints to establishing effective pest management approaches for smallholder farmers is the lack of adequate information about farmers' knowledge, perceptions and practices in pest management. This study was therefore conducted to (1) evaluate farmers' knowledge and perceptions of cotton pests; (2) examine farmers' current practices in managing cotton pests; (3) identify pest management challenges and intervention opportunities in order to develop efficient integrated pest management (IPM) approaches. A total …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis addresses the treatment of knowledge and the absence of knowledge in " Superman," a collection of his short stories where apocalyptic flares illume against the backdrops of everyday miracles. In " Superman," seemingly oppositional terms and concepts are presented as variable parts of a greater context that embraces the inversion of correspondent harmony flowing to disorienting dissonance; it also embraces simulations, where perplexity takes on the guise of clarity. | 125 pages

A writer's journey. Many writers talk about the journey to create a work. They discuss where the work began, then took the writer, the places they have travelled in the time to create the work. During the course of this work I have travelled from the abstraction of experience to the concrete of realization. This book of poetry is the guidebook of those travels. It has the early stops into the terrible and great miserableness of tragic violence as well as the moments at rest as these moments are digested, quietly disturbing moments of emotionless behavior, the desire to recede, …

The boll weevil, Anthonomus grandis, has been monitored through deployment of traps baited with aggregation pheromone components. However, field studies have shown that the number of insects caught in these traps is significantly reduced during cotton squaring, suggesting that volatiles produced by plants at this phenological stage may be involved in attraction. Here, we evaluated the chemical profile of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by undamaged or damaged cotton plants at different phenological stages, under different infestation conditions, and determined the attractiveness of these VOCs to adults of A. grandis. In addition, we investigated whether or not VOCs released by …

Isoschaftoside, an allelopathic di-C-glycosylflavone from Desmodium spp. root exudates, is biosynthesised through sequential glucosylation and arabinosylation of 2-hydroxynaringenin with UDP-glucose and UDP-arabinose. Complete conversion to the flavone requires chemical dehydration implying a dehydratase enzyme has a role in vivo to complete the biosynthesis. The C-glucosyltransferase has been partially characterised and its activity demonstrated in highly purified fractions. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Thanks to the recent development of integrative approaches that combine dated phylogenies with models of biogeographic evolution, it is becoming more feasible to assess the roles of dispersal and vicariance in creating complex patterns of geographical distribution. However, the historical biogeography of taxa with good dispersal abilities, like birds or flying insects, still remains largely unknown because of the lack of complete phylogenies accompanied by robust estimates of divergence times. In this study, we investigate the evolution and historical biogeography of the globally distributed pest genus Spodoptera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) using complete taxon sampling and an extensive set of analyses. The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is one of the most destructive pests of corn in North America and is currently invading Europe. The two major invasive outbreaks of rootworm in Europe have occurred, in North-West Italy and in Central and South-Eastern Europe. These two outbreaks originated from independent introductions from North America. Secondary contact probably occurred in North Italy between these two outbreaks, in 2008. We used 13 microsatellite markers to conduct a population genetics study, to demonstrate that this geographic contact resulted in a zone of admixture in the Italian region of Veneto. We show …

Background: Increasing the distribution and use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in Sub-Saharan Africa has made controlling malaria with ITNs more practical. We evaluated community effects induced by ITNs, specifically long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs), under ordinary conditions in an endemic malaria area of Western Kenya. Methods: Using the database from Mbita Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS), children younger than 5 years old were assessed over four survey periods. We analyzed the effect of bed net usage, LLIN density and population density of young people around a child on all-cause child mortality (ACCM) rates using Cox PH models. Results: During the …

Western Libraries, an academic library with an FTE of 34,000, and Ingram Coutts, have worked together to implement an e-preferred Patron Driven Acquisition (PDA) program at Western Libraries. This implementation has required collaboration between Coutts and Western Libraries collection librarians to develop effective profiles. These profiles allow the PDA collection to be filtered according to subject and non-subject parameters.
There are several aspects of this project that make it unique. First, every e-book that is selected by a PDA-preferred profile will automatically be loaded into the catalogue for PDA. Patrons will trigger a purchase if the book is accessed twice. …

Restoration Of A Declining Inner-Ring Suburban Area: Lamar-Collins, Arlington, Texas, Ashley Shook
Planning Masters Professional Reports - Archive
Inner-ring suburban revitalization and redevelopment is a growing challenge in the United States as downtowns and outer-ring suburbs receive increased investment. Greenfields in fringe cities offer less construction obstacles and more return on investment for private sector developers leaving inner-ring suburbs behind. Additionally, with aging infrastructure and housing stock, declining population, increasing crime, and regional competition for investment, inner-ring suburbs face mounting difficulty toward recovery. One neighborhood at a time, these first-tier suburbs encourage investment from within and outside of the community through various planning techniques, some for successfully than others. Adding to the mounting obstacles is the misunderstanding of …

Building upon the established foundation of research concerning the systemic marginalization of Black men in traditionally White educational spaces, this essay positions Black male educational counterstories at the center of critical communication inquiry. To do so, critical race theory (CRT) and critical communication pedagogy (CCP) are productively woven together to draw rich insights from 4 focus groups with Black male students, 1 focus group with Black male faculty and students, and 11 interviews with Black male faculty. Their reflections reveal how Black misandric ideology manifests in traditionally White educational spaces and demand that we pay close attention to what Black …

The tendency to pursue innovativeness and adopt new technologies has been found more likely with younger individuals and a strong relationship between attitude and personal computer (PC) utilization has been found. However, research in these areas is mainly focused on high-income countries. Do these findings hold for low-income countries? What are the perceptions of African youth on the factors that impact PC use? There is a dearth of micro-level studies that promote understanding about the behavior of individuals in low-income countries. This study looked at demographic data including age, gender, grade level, region, and prior experience among 228 youth from …

Walking is the fundamental form of transportation system. The mode of transportation plays a vital role in the physical form of the city. Before innovation of the automobile, cities were planned in a compact form, and anyone can cross the city by foot. But, innovation of the automobile has brought a drastic change in the urban form and the mode of transportation. Cities started to develop without sidewalks and people were forced to use automobiles. Due to energy consumption, environmental concern and household expenses on automobile, auto culture has been a costly mode of transportation. So, urban planners have developed …

Occasionally, plagiarism may occur because an individual simply does not understand the error made. However, perioperative nursing professionals need to take a stand that lack of knowledge is not acceptable and that it is imperative to attend to the six Rs. This is analogous to an RN who is scrubbed in being told, “Your glove is contaminated.” There should be no question in anyone's mind that the glove will be changed. Taking and using someone else's words or ideas is a breach of trust and authenticity to others and should not be considered a choice. Plagiarism is an act of …
