Mid-Ir Emissivity Spectra Of Mg- And Ca- Carbonates, Oxides, And Hydroxides, Timothy Glotch

Geosciences Research Data

We used three methods—spectral index mapping, linear spectral mixture analysis, and factor analysis and target transformation—to determine if carbonate decomposition products, including lime (CaO), periclase (MgO), portlandite (Ca(OH)2), and brucite (Mg(OH)2), are present on the surface of Mars. Using an expanded spectral library that includes decomposition products of calcite and magnesite, we deconvolved a binned emissivity data set from the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS-TES). The deconvolution model indicates that anhydrous carbonates are not present at kilometer scales above the TES detection limit; however, carbonate decomposition products may be present at or above the TES detection limit in …

Background: It is increasingly recognized that the bacteria that live in and on the human body (the microbiome) can play an important role in health and disease. The composition of the microbiome is potentially influenced by both internal factors (such as phylogeny and host physiology) and external factors (such as diet and local environment), and interspecific comparisons can aid in understanding the importance of these factors. Results: To gain insights into the relative importance of these factors on saliva microbiome diversity, we here analyze the saliva microbiomes of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus) from two sanctuaries in Africa, …

Several arthropod pests including the hive beetles Aethina tumida and Oplostomus haroldi and the ectoparasite Varroa destructor have recently been identified as associated with honey bee colonies in Kenya. Here, we report the first documentation of Oplostomus fuligineus in Kenya, a related scarab of O. haroldi, and distribution, diversity and pattern of damage of the two scarab species on honey bee colonies. Sequence analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene revealed that there was sufficient sequence divergence to separate both Oplostomus beetles. The same molecular marker separated O. haroldi according to place of origin in Kenya. We further show from …

Comparison Of Volatile Blends And Nucleotide Sequences Of Two Beauveria Bassiana Isolates Of Different Virulence And Repellency Towards The Termite Macrotermes Michealseni, D. M. Mburu, N. K. Maniania, A. Hassanali

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Isolates of the fungus Beauveria bassiana have different levels of virulence and repellency against the termite Macrotermes michaelseni. In the present study, we compared the volatile profiles and gene sequences of two isolates of the fungus with different levels of virulence and repellence to the termite. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometric analyses showed quantitative and qualitative differences in the composition of volatiles of the two isolates. The repellencies of synthetic blends of 10 prominent components that mimicked the volatiles of each of the two isolates were significantly different. Subtractive bioassays showed that the repellency of each isolate was due to synergistic effects …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Rift Valley fever (RVF), a mosquito-borne zoonosis, is a major public health and veterinary problem in sub-Saharan Africa. Surveillance to monitor mosquito populations during the inter-epidemic period (IEP) and viral activity in these vectors is critical to informing public health decisions for early warning and control of the disease. Using a combination of field bioassays, electrophysiological and chemical analyses we demonstrated that skin-derived aldehydes (heptanal, octanal, nonanal, decanal) common to RVF virus (RVFV) hosts including sheep, cow, donkey, goat and human serve as potent attractants for RVFV mosquito vectors. Furthermore, a blend formulated from the four aldehydes and combined with …

Love Is In The Air: Olfaction-Based Mate-Odour Identification By Jumping Spiders From The Genus Cyrba, Ana M. Cerveira, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are known for having good eyesight, but the extent to which they rely on olfaction is poorly understood. Here we demonstrate for the first time that olfactory pheromones are used by two species from the salticid genus Cyrba (C. algerina and C. ocellata). Using a Y-shape olfactometer, we investigated the ability of adult males and females of both species to discriminate between mate and non-mate odour. A hidden spider or a spider's draglines (no spider present) were used as odour sources. There was no evident response by females of either Cyrba species to any tested odour. Males …

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu Jan 2013

Intuitive Risk Aversion And Reflective Risk Taking In Gain-Framed Economic Games, Tianwei Liu

Psychology

We typically think of risk taking as impulsive, but evolutionary pressure may actually favor playing it safe as a default strategy. In the context of dual-process theory of reasoning (Evans, 2003), we hypothesized that risk aversion is intuitive for an average decision maker and reflective thinking serves to reduce this intuition. This idea was tested in two studies using economic decision-making tasks. Information processing style was manipulated by forcing fast or slow decisions (Study 1) and by picture priming (Study 2). These manipulations did not affect decisions. We also measured participants' cognitive reflection ability as an individual difference variable in …

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Climate models predict that water limited regions around the world will become drier and warmer in the near future, including southwestern North America. We developed a large-scale experimental system that allows testing of the ecosystem impacts of precipitation changes. Four treatments were applied to 1600 m2 plots (40 m × 40 m), each with three replicates in a piñon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniper monosperma) ecosystem. These species have extensive root systems, requiring large-scale manipulation to effectively alter soil water availability. Treatments consisted of: 1) irrigation plots that receive supplemental water additions, 2) drought plots that receive 55% of …

An Evaluation Of Models Of Bare Soil Evaporation Formulated With Different Land Surface Boundary Conditions And Assumptions, Kathleen M. Smits, Viet V. Ngo, Abdullah Cihan, Toshihiro Sakaki, Tissa H. Illangasekare Dec 2012

An Evaluation Of Models Of Bare Soil Evaporation Formulated With Different Land Surface Boundary Conditions And Assumptions, Kathleen M. Smits, Viet V. Ngo, Abdullah Cihan, Toshihiro Sakaki, Tissa H. Illangasekare

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications - Archive

Bare soil evaporation is a key process for water exchange between the land and the atmosphere and an important component of the water balance. However, there is no agreement on the best modeling methodology to determine evaporation under different atmospheric boundary conditions. Also, there is a lack of directly measured soil evaporation data for model validation to compare these methods to establish the validity of their mathematical formulations. Thus, a need exists to systematically compare evaporation estimates using existing methods to experimental observations. The goal of this work is to test different conceptual and mathematical formulations that are used to …

An Overview On The Indium-Thallium (In-Tl) Shape Memory Alloy Nanowires, Zhiping P. Luo

College of Health, Science, and Technology

The binary indium-thallium (In-Tl) alloy is a classic type of shape memory alloy with a low melting temperature. In-Tl nanowires (NWs) were prepared by a simple mechanical injection of liquid metal method using anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) as a template. Sample preparation procedures are given in detail, including the AAO fabrication and mechanical injection techniques. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was utilized to characterize the NWs. It was revealed that the NWs were composed of polycrystals with high crystallinity. By in situ heating the NWs in the TEM, reversible transformations between the parent and the martensite phases were observed in both …

Investigation On Thermo-Mechanical Instability Of Porous Low Dielectric Constant Materials, Emil Hyunbae Zin Dec 2012

Investigation On Thermo-Mechanical Instability Of Porous Low Dielectric Constant Materials, Emil Hyunbae Zin

Material Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

This study investigates the structural stability of porous low dielectric constant materials (PLK) under thermal and mechanical load and the influence of contributing factors including porosity as intrinsic factor and plasma damage and moisture absorption as extrinsic factors on thermo-mechanical instability of PLK in advanced Cu/PLK interconnects. For this purpose, a ball indentation creep test technique was developed to examine the thermal and mechanical instability of PLK at relevant load and temperature conditions in the interconnect structure. Our exploration with the ball indentation creep test found that PLK films plastically deforms with time, indicating that viscoplastic deformation does occur under …
