Balancing Acquisition And Sorting Policies Of Remanufacturing, Taeuk Kang
Balancing Acquisition And Sorting Policies Of Remanufacturing, Taeuk Kang
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
A remanufacturer struggles with uncertainty of returns and quality of products. With regard to the remanufacturing process, this study focuses on the determination of the following policies: a) Acquisition policy and b) Sorting policy. The purpose of this study is to find the optimality of both acquisition and sorting which, to meet demand with the maximization of profits over time, may need to be changed. More specific research questions are as follows: a) How much product returns should be obtained to meet demand through remanufacturing?, b) What level of sorting discrimination should be used for disassembly to meet demand at …

An Assessment Of User Response To Phishing Attacks: The Effects Of Fear And Self-Confidence, Deanna House
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
Phishing attacks have threatened the security of both home users and organizations in recent years. Individuals of varying levels of computer proficiency are potential targets for a phishing attack; all that is needed is an email address and Internet access. Phishing uses social engineering to fraudulently obtain information that is confidential or sensitive. Individuals are targeted to take action by clicking on a link or providing information. At present, phishing research is lacking in both theory and actual behavioral data. This research aims to fill that gap by introducing a new model and collecting data from multiple sources (including an …
The Competitive Dynamics Of A Firm's Capacity Position And Inventory Leanness Activities: Evidence From Us Manufacturing Industries, Rajat Mishra
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
The notion of `perennial gale of creative destruction' by Schumpeter and Austrian economics has been researched in the field of strategic management to study the competitive dynamics among firms' rivalrous activities. However, its application is sparse in operations management. With the advancement of the field and the increasing pressure on the firms, the strategies regarding operations planning and control are argued to be not just internal according to the conventional norms of operations management, but these strategic moves will be impacted by the moves of their immediate rivals. This competitive imitation is studied in the areas of inventory management and …
The Utilization Of Social Spaces Near Soccer Fields By Attendees Of Hispanic Soccer League Matches In Dallas, Texas, Blake Samper
The Utilization Of Social Spaces Near Soccer Fields By Attendees Of Hispanic Soccer League Matches In Dallas, Texas, Blake Samper
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive
The purpose of this research is to observe and identify the social interactions in pedestrian spaces immediately surrounding soccer fields during Hispanic soccer league matches in Dallas, Texas. The research uses passive observation of spectators at Hispanic soccer league matches in the Dallas area to determine which activities are prevalent and which types of spaces are most commonly used and for what purpose. Recent immigration has greatly boosted the numbers of Hispanics living in North Central Texas (Price & Whitworth, 2004). This population increase is leading to wide demographic changes where immigrants settle. One of these shifts is occurring in …

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion
The study of rhetoric usually concerns itself with analysis of discourse more clearly identifiable as a text, but often overlooked is how apparently non-textual elements may shape our own personal narratives. However, rhetorical theory can indeed be applied to something like LEGO, that beyond marketing and branding, most people do not immediately consider textual. Ultimately by using the Burkeian pentad as a terministic screen, this project aims to determine how the act of playing with LEGO, and even the LEGO brick itself, serve to construct realities, and how those realities impact our own.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) are often underrepresented in major percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) trials. Use of PCI for STEMI, and associated outcomes in patients aged ≥65 years with STEMI needed further investigation. METHODS: We used the 2001-2010 United States Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database to examine the temporal trends in STEMI, use of PCI for STEMI, and outcomes among patients aged 65-79 and ≥80 years. RESULTS: During 2001-2010, of 4,017,367 patients aged ≥65 years with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), 1,434,579 (35.7%) had STEMI. Over this period, among patients aged 65-79 and ≥80 years, STEMI decreased by …

Detection of trypanosomes that cause disease in human beings and livestock within their tsetse fly hosts is an essential component of vector and disease control programmes. Several molecular-based diagnostic tests have been developed for this purpose. Many of these tests, while sensitive, require analysis of trypanosome DNA extracted from single flies, or from pooled tsetse fly heads and amplified trypanosome DNA. In this study, we evaluated the relative analytical and diagnostic sensitivities of two PCR-based tests (ITS and TBR) and a Trypanozoon specific LAMP assay using pooled whole tsetse flies and midguts spiked with serially diluted procyclics of a laboratory …

Camels are the most valuable livestock species in the Horn of Africa and play a pivotal role in the nutritional sustainability for millions of people. Their health status is therefore of utmost importance for the people living in this region. Streptococcus agalactiae, a Group B Streptococcus (GBS), is an important camel pathogen. Here we present the first epidemiological study based on genetic and phenotypic data from African camel derived GBS. Ninety-two GBS were characterized using multilocus sequence typing (MLST), capsular polysaccharide typing and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We analysed the GBS using Bayesian linkage, phylogenetic and minimum spanning tree …

Rainich-Type Conditions For Null Electrovacuum Spacetimes Ii, Charles G. Torre
Research Vignettes
In this second of two worksheets I continue describing local Rainich-type conditions which are necessary and sufficient for the metric to define a null electrovacuum. In other words, these conditions, which I will call the null electrovacuum conditions, guarantee the existence of a null electromagnetic field such that the metric and electromagnetic field satisfy the Einstein-Maxwell equations. When it exists, the electromagnetic field is easily constructed from the metric. In this worksheet I consider the null electrovacuum conditions which apply when a certain null geodesic congruence determined by the metric is twisting. I shall illustrate the these conditions using a …

The MAPK3 Tpl2 controls innate and adaptive immunity by regulating TLR, TNF-α, and GPCR signaling in a variety of cell types. Its ablation gives rise to an anti-inflammatory phenotype characterized by resistance to LPS-induced endotoxin shock, DSS-induced colitis, and TNF-α-induced IBD. Here, we address the role of Tpl2 in autoimmunity. Our data show that the ablation and the pharmacological inhibition of Tpl2 protect mice from antiplatelet antibody-induced thrombocytopenia, a model of ITP. Thrombocytopenia in this model and in ITP is caused by phagocytosis of platelets opsonized with antiplatelet antibodies and depends on FcγR activation in splenic and hepatic myeloid cells. …

Although much is known about the structure of adult temperament and personality, significantly less is known about the structure of child temperament. We examined the structure of child temperament in 205 seven-year-olds using observational measures. Exploratory factor analysis identified factors representing positive emotionality/sociability, disinhibition/anger, fear/behavioral inhibition, and sadness. The predictive validity of these dimensions was evaluated by examining their associations with children's internalizing and externalizing symptoms: positive emotionality/sociability showed positive associations with ADHD symptoms, disinhibition/anger showed positive associations with externalizing symptoms, fear/behavioral inhibition showed negative associations with ADHD and CD symptoms, and sadness showed positive associations with both internalizing and …

Bradykinin, acting via the bradykinin B2 receptor (B2R), is a potent stimulator of adrenomedullary catecholamine biosynthesis and release and likely plays an important role in the adrenomedullary stress response. However, the effects of stress on the expression of this receptor in the adrenal medulla are currently unclear. Here, we examined the changes in adrenomedullary B2R gene expression in male rats in response to single (1 time) and repeated (6 times) exposure to 2 hours immobilization stress (IMO). Immediately after 1 or 6 times IMO, B2R mRNA levels were increased by 9-fold and 7-fold, respectively, and returned to unstressed control levels …

This qualitative study focuses on how women of three different generations, Generation Y, Generation X and Baby Boomers, view the concept of work-life balance and what relationship these views have to their attainment of workplace leadership positions. Work-life balance was defined differently across the three generations, but the generational lines faded as most women reported struggling with finding a balance. Some women conveyed choosing not to pursue high-level leadership positions as the personal cost was too high. Those who had obtained high-level leadership positions shared what types of support were most effective in helping them juggle personal and professional obligations. …
