Analyzing The Value Of Mixed Use Urban Infill: An Exploratory Analysis On Changes In Property Values And Demographics In Local Initiatives Of Dallas And Fort Worth Texas, Matthew A. Ables

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

Mixed-use infill development has gained national attention as a strategy for revitalization and redevelopment for cities. The strategy is viewed by "Smart Growth" proponents and New Urbanists as a potential solution to sprawling urban forms and a potential cure for many problems associated with auto-dependence. However, this strategy is not new, and it has been debated through different disciplines in relation to its true impacts on communities and cities. Yet, the discussion on infill has centered upon measuring the amount of infill occuring, and the economic impacts of residential infill. This thesis utilizes a descriptive analysis to observe property value …

Weight Modules Of Orthosymplectic Lie Superalgebras, Thomas Lynn Ferguson Jan 2014

Weight Modules Of Orthosymplectic Lie Superalgebras, Thomas Lynn Ferguson

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

A long-standing problem in representation theory is the classification of all simple weight modules of the classical Lie superalgebras. This problem was reduced to the classification of simple bounded highest weight modules. The latter classification has been accomplished for all classical Lie superalgebras except for the orthosymplectic series osp(m|2n) where m = 1, 3, 4, 5, 6. In this thesis, we complete the classification of the simple bounded highest weight modules of osp(1|2n) (i.e., for m = 1). The classification is obtained by developing constraints on primitive vectors in tensor products of bounded (Weyl) and finite-dimensional osp(1|2n)-modules.

Differential Equation Models Of Foreign Body Fibrotic Reactions For Assessing Roles Of Macrophage Phenotypes And Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Larrissa Owens

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

Implant failure due to fibrotic encapsulation is an ongoing challenge in the bio-medical field. We develop two mathematical models based on partial differential equations in two spatial dimensions, and use them to gain quantitative insights regarding the dynamics of immune cells and proteins following the insertion of a foreign body. We focus heavily on incorporating a distinction between varied phenotypes of macrophage cells and analyzing their effects on healing processes. We extend our research to a new model that incorporates mesenchymal stem cells that influence the chemical reactions of immune regulators. Stability analysis is conducted on a family of equilibria …

Evaluation Of Physico-Mechanical Properties Of Clayey Soils Using Electrical Resistivity Imaging Technique, Golam Kibria Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Physico-Mechanical Properties Of Clayey Soils Using Electrical Resistivity Imaging Technique, Golam Kibria

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Resistivity imaging (RI) is a promising approach to obtaining continuous profile of soil subsurface. This method offers simple technique to identify moisture variation and heterogeneity of the investigated area. However, at present, only qualitative information of subsurface can be obtained using RI. A study on the quantification of geotechnical properties has become important for rigorous use of this method in the evaluation of geohazard potential and construction quality control of landfill liner system. Several studies have been performed to describe electrical resistivity of soil as a function of pore fluid conductivity and surface conductance. However, characterization tests on pore water …

Non-Destructive Sasw Evaluation Of Controlled Low Strength Material As A Pipeline Bedding Material, Rathna Phanindra Mothkuri

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Evaluation of stiffness properties of subsurface soil layers provides vital insight into the performance of a geotechnical entity. Stiffness properties can be determined by both field and laboratory tests. Owing to their advantages over laboratory tests, the field tests are often given priority. non-destructive seismic method Spectral Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) has been implemented in the current research to investigate the stiffness properties of buried materials. The SASW technique works on the principle of wave propagation. The surface wave velocity obtained through the test is used to determine the shear modulus, and thus the stiffness, of the geotechnical entity. In …

Effects Of Climate Change And Perturbation In Biogeochemical Cycles On Oxygen Distribution And Ocean Acidification, Teresa Marie Beaty-Sykes Jan 2014

Effects Of Climate Change And Perturbation In Biogeochemical Cycles On Oxygen Distribution And Ocean Acidification, Teresa Marie Beaty-Sykes

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

Dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the ocean is an important component of the marine biogeochemical cycles. In this study a global oceanic carbon cycle model (HAMOCC 2.0) was used to address how oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) respond to changes due to CO₂ radiative forcing. Atmospheric pCO₂ was increased at a rate of 1% annually and the model is stabilized at 2 X, 4 X, 6 X, and 8 X preindustrial pCO₂ levels. With an increase in CO₂ radiative forcing, the OMZ in the Pacific Ocean was controlled largely by changes in particulate organic carbon (POC) export. In contrast, the vertical …

Applications Of Cubical Arrays In The Study Of Finite Semifields, Kelly Casimir Aman

Mathematics Dissertations - Archive

It is well known that any finite semifield, S, can be viewed as an n-dimensional vector space over a finite field or prime order, Fp, and that the multiplication in S defines and can be defined by an n x n x n cubical array of scalars, A. For any element a E S, the matrix, La, corresponding to left multiplication by a can be determined from A. In this paper we show that there exists a unique monic polynomial of minimal degree, f E Fp[x], such that f(a) = 0, and which divides the minimal polynomial of La. Furthermore, …

Development And Analysis Of Low Calcium Flyash Based Geopolymer For Structural Applications, Gaurav Nagalia Jan 2014

Development And Analysis Of Low Calcium Flyash Based Geopolymer For Structural Applications, Gaurav Nagalia

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Geopolymers are an innovative ceramic material composed of long chains and networks of inorganic molecules are being used as an alternative to conventional Portland cement for infrastructure construction, replacement of intersection and localized repairs. Some of the advantages of this material is due to its ultra-fast setting time, rapid strength development and the phenomenal reduction in carbon foot print as compared to Portland cement. However, this material is yet to be commercialized due to the variability in its mechanical strength when using flyash from different sources. In this study aluminosilicate geopolymers with different alkali oxides (feldspars) have been prepared by …

A Hmm-Based Prediction Model For Spatio-Temporal Trajectories, Sakthi Kumaran Shanmuganathan Jan 2014

A Hmm-Based Prediction Model For Spatio-Temporal Trajectories, Sakthi Kumaran Shanmuganathan

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Spatio-temporal trajectories are time series data that represent movement of an object over the time. Hidden Markov Models (HMM), a variant of Markov Models (MM), were first applied at a large scale to speech recognition but have also been used in time series prediction by analyzing trends in historical time series data. In this research, we propose a storm prediction model using a HMM built from overall storm trajectories derived from raw rainfall data. This HMM is built by assuming the states are associated with clusters created by clustering the locations of each storm from the overall storm trajectories. Then …

The buckwheat Eriogonum corymbosum is widely distributed throughout the southwestern United States, forming a complex of eight varieties. Eriogonum corymbosum var. nilesii is a primarily yellow-flowered taxon reported only from Clark County, Nevada. A previous genetic study by our research group found that variety nilesii is genetically distinct from other E. corymbosum varieties, based on a limited number of populations. Here, we assess genetic variation in 14 newly sampled yellow-flowered populations from southern Nevada, southern Utah, and northern Arizona, and compare them to genetic variation in six populations of previously determined E. corymbosum varieties. Of the new populations, we identified …

Seismic Stratigraphy And Tectonic Evolution Of A Transform Continental Margin, Offshore Sierra Leone, Chinwendu A Elenwa

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

The offshore Sierra Leone basin is an exploration frontier area with commercial hydrocarbon potential. The basin is located at the northernmost end of the equatorial Atlantic margin in the South Atlantic; it is bound to the South by the Gulf of Guinea Petroleum province. The Sierra Leone margin has not had the exploration attention like most basins in the equatorial Atlantic, such lack of attention may be explained by the structural complexity of the basin. Despite the recent successful petroleum activities in the basin, very little geological information have been placed in the public domain by the operators. This research …

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated that induction of heme oxygenase-1 results in weight loss in several rodent models of obesity. However, the specific role of the heme oxygenase-1 metabolite, carbon monoxide (CO), in this response has yet to be established. We recently reported that chronic treatment with CO releasing molecules results in prevention of weight gain in mice fed a high fat diet. In the present study, we sought to determine the effect of chronic CO inhalation on the development and reversal of high fat diet induced obesity. Results: CO inhalation at both levels initially resulted in a prevention and …

First Principles Computational Modeling Of The Surface Properties Of Uranium Dioxide, Megan Hoover Jan 2014

First Principles Computational Modeling Of The Surface Properties Of Uranium Dioxide, Megan Hoover

Physics Theses - Archive

The interaction of uranium dioxide (UO₂) with environmental elements occurs at its exposed surface and a fundamental understanding of this interaction process begins at the atomic scale. In this regard, atomic scale modeling of the properties of clean and adsorbate-covered uranium dioxide (UO₂) surfaces can be used to elucidate UO₂ surface mechanisms such as corrosion and the formation of complex species via environmental gas adsorption. In this thesis, structural and electronic properties of clean and adsorbatecovered low index UO₂ surfaces were modeled using regular and hybrid density functional theory. Specifically, the properties of the clean (111) and (110) surfaces were …

Cutoff Frequencies For Alfven Waves In The Solar Atmosphere, B L Harsha Kalpanie Perera Jan 2014

Cutoff Frequencies For Alfven Waves In The Solar Atmosphere, B L Harsha Kalpanie Perera

Physics Dissertations - Archive

Propagation of linear Alfven waves in the isothermal and non-isothermal solaratmosphere is investigated numerically and analytically. It is shown that thetwo wave variables, the velocity and magnetic field perturbations, behave differently and that there is a range of wave frequencies for which the wave behavior changes from propagating to non-propagating. The so-called transition and turning points corresponding to this change are determined analytically, and their locations in the atmosphere are calculated and verified against the numerical results. The transition and turning points are then used to introduce cutoff frequencies, which are different for different wave variables. The main result is …

Response Of Free-Living Nitrogen-Fixing Microorganisms To Land Use Change In The Amazon Rainforest, Babur S. Mirza, C. Potisap, K. Nusslein, B. Bohannan, J. L.M. Rodrigues

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The Amazon rainforest, the largest equatorial forest in the world, is being cleared for pasture and agricultural use at alarming rates. Tropical deforestation is known to cause alterations in microbial communities at taxonomic and phylogenetic levels, but it is unclear whether microbial functional groups are altered. We asked whether free-living nitrogen-fixing microorganisms (diazotrophs) respond to deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, using analysis of the marker gene nifH. Clone libraries were generated from soil samples collected from a primary forest, a 5-year-old pasture originally converted from primary forest, and a secondary forest established after pasture abandonment. Although diazotroph richness did not …

Volatile Phytochemicals As Mosquito Semiochemicals, Vincent O. Nyasembe, Baldwyn Torto Jan 2014

Volatile Phytochemicals As Mosquito Semiochemicals, Vincent O. Nyasembe, Baldwyn Torto

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Plant biochemical processes result in the release of an array of volatile chemical substances into the environment, some of which are known to play important plant fitness enhancing functions, such as attracting pollinators, thermal tolerance of photosynthesis, and defense against herbivores. Cunningly, phytophagous insects have evolved mechanisms to utilize these volatiles to their own advantage, either to colonize a suitable host for feeding, reproduction and oviposition or avoid an unsuitable one. The volatile compounds involved in plant-insect chemical interactions have been widely exploited in the management of agricultural pests. On the other hand, use of plant volatiles in the management …
