In low- and lower-middle-income countries (LLMICs), delivering equitable kidney care presents substantial challenges, resulting in significant disparities in disease management and treatment outcomes for people with kidney failure. This comprehensive report leveraged data from the International Society of Nephrology-Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA), to provide a detailed update on the landscape of kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in LLMICs. Among the 65 participating LLMICs, reimbursement for KRT (publicly funded by the government and free at the point of delivery) was available in 28%, 15%, and 8% for hemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and kidney transplantation (KT), respectively. Additionally, while 56% and …

Examining Aid Fragmentation And Collaboration Opportunities In Cambodia’S Health Sector, Suyeon Lee, Eunice Y. Park

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background: Cambodia’s health sector faces significant challenges exacerbated by aid fragmentation, where development aid is dispersed among numerous small, uncoordinated projects. This study examines the distribution of health sector aid among Cambodia’s principal donors to identify priorities, overlaps, and potential collaboration opportunities, addressing the urgent need for aid efficiency and alignment with national health priorities. Methods: Utilizing OECD datasets and the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) for the years 2010–2021, this study quantifies aid fragmentation within Cambodia’s health sector. It analyzes aid allocations from the top five donors—United States, Australia, South Korea, Japan, and Germany—across various health projects and initiatives, evaluating the …

Background: Nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion in the perioperative period is a common procedure undertaken by the anesthesiologist. The conventional technique of insertion is associated with a higher failure rate under anesthesia. Additional maneuvers and instrumentation are required for a successful insertion. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the C-MAC ™ video laryngoscope system with the conventional and reverse Sellick's methods for the insertion of NGT. Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, participants aged 18–70 years who underwent elective surgeries requiring NGT insertion were randomized into three groups. The primary outcome was the first-attempt success rate. The secondary …

Dementia is a progressive deterioration in cognitive abilities that hinders one’s capacity to function independently. The present dementia treatment includes galantamine, rivastigmine, donepezil, and memantine. However, they trigger many cardiovascular complications including syncopal episodes and myocardial infarction. Herbal medications are noted for their efficacy and absence of adverse pharmacological consequences. Hence the quest for herb-based medicines is happening. ‘Terminalia bellirica fruit pulp’ alleviates an array of illnesses. The ‘aqueous extract of Terminalia bellirica fruit pulp’ (AETBFP) was examined for cognitive-enhancing effects on rodents. Hebbs William and Elevated Plus Maze models were utilized to test the cognitive-enhancing properties of the fruit pulp. …

Background: Patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSCs) represents a powerful tool for elucidating the underlying disease mechanisms. Macular corneal dystrophy (MCD) is an intractable and progressive bilateral corneal disease affecting the corneal stroma due to mutation/s in carbohydrate sulfotransferase 6 (CHST6) gene. The underlying molecular mechanisms leading to MCD are unclear due to a lack of human contextual model and limited access to affected corneal stromal keratocytes (CSKs) from MCD patients. This has restricted the current treatment option for MCD to restorative corneal transplantation thereby lending itself to the use of iPSCs. Methods: induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) were generated …

PI3K-α mutation plays a critical role in cancer development, notably in breast cancer, particularly within HR + /HER2- subtypes. These mutations drive tumor growth and survival by activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, which is essential for cell proliferation and survival. Our research aimed to identify natural compounds that can inhibit mutant and specific isoforms of PI3K-α to prevent tumor progression. e-Pharmacophore model was generated using Receptor-Ligand complex using the Inavolisib drug (PDB:8EXV) and phase screening was performed using the Molport database of natural compounds. Through molecular docking studies we identified seven promising compounds for further molecular dynamics simulations. Among these, three …

The Dual Diagnosis Of Alcohol Use Disorder And Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder—How Do They Interact With Each Other?, Savitha Soman, Rajesh Nair

Open Access archive

People with psychiatric conditions often have comorbid substance use disorders. Obsessive–compulsive disorder is frequently comorbid with alcohol use disorder. Both obsessive–compulsive disorder and alcohol use disorder share common characteristics like high levels of compulsions and impulsivity. These stem from common neurobiological mechanisms. In most patients, obsessive–compulsive disorder begins first, followed by alcohol use; however, the order of onset can vary. Various factors like genetics, gender, severity of the conditions, and comorbid depression have been known to contribute to the relationship between obsessive–compulsive disorder and alcohol use disorder. The prevalence rates in clinical studies are low as compared to epidemiological studies …

Haze can significantly reduce visibility and contrast of images captured outdoors, necessitating the enhancement of images. This degradation in image quality can adversely affect various applications, including autonomous driving, object detection, and surveillance, where poor visibility may lead to navigation errors and obscure crucial details. Existing dehazing techniques face several challenges: spatial methods tend to be computationally heavy, transform methods often fall short in quality, hybrid methods can be intricate and demanding, and deep learning methods require extensive datasets and computational power. To overcome these challenges, we present ODD-Net, a hybrid deep learning architecture. Our research introduces a comprehensive data …

Background: Dairying in India has witnessed a radical transformation from a largely unorganised activity into a thriving organised industry. However, there are only a limited number of earlier attempts that specifically evaluated the milk production pattern of India. Moreover, most of these earlier studies are quite dated and have employed autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models, which suffer from the problem of local optima. To overcome this lacuna, we have utilised a genetic algorithm (GA) in the ARIMA framework. Its suitability to forecast the annual milk production in India has also been assessed comparatively with respect to the traditional ARIMA …
