Aligning Mapping Tools To Support Successful Learning In An Introductory Biology Course, Erin Duckett, Danilo M Baylen Mar 2016

Aligning Mapping Tools To Support Successful Learning In An Introductory Biology Course, Erin Duckett, Danilo M Baylen

Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching & Learning Conference (2012-2019) (Archived)

Most undergraduate students take a science course during their first two years. One of the challenges of teaching an introductory science course is the reality that many undergraduate students are not prepared to be self-directed learners. Many students expect to earn a grade of A or B just like in high school. However, the failing results of the first exam can be a shocker to the students. Not only do the students not know the science content they studied, they had difficulties retaining and recalling the information.

This presentation discusses and describes the use of concept or visual mapping as …

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

How does an academic library go about growing its own Scholarly Communication (SC) program with no budget, no staff, no dedicated office space, no partners, and no experience? The University of Central Florida Libraries responded to such a challenge during 2012-15 by creating a grassroots SC program staffed by a volunteer 20-member library faculty advisory group and creating an innovative “Research Lifecycle” model to help define an evolving menu of SC resources and services that could be turned on, as available, to UCF constituents.

Presentation for the Florida Library Association 2016 Annual Conference.

Β-Cell Adaptation To Elevated Palmitate Concentrations (Hyperlipidemia), Daniel R. Lathen, Jeffery S. Tessem Ph.D.

Student Works

It is estimated that over 370 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, and this number is increasing rapidly. Normally, β-cells in the pancreas secrete insulin, which is necessary for proper glucose absorption and storage. Both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are characterized by decreased functional β-cell mass and insulin production, and increased circulating glucose and fatty acid levels. Diabetics’ pancreata maintain small amounts of functional β-cells, but these surviving cells are damaged and destroyed over time due to the harmful effects of hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia. These β-cells must adapt to survive. Hence, diabetes is itself a selective process. We …
