Workshops Toolkit: Tailoring Learning To Schedules And Needs, Zachary W. Elder Apr 2016

Workshops Toolkit: Tailoring Learning To Schedules And Needs, Zachary W. Elder

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

George Washington University Libraries were tasked with transforming support for graduate students while taking into account increasing numbers of online students, off-campus programs, and students working full-time. In addition, due to librarian turnover and other factors, we needed to accomplish our goal with a reduced workforce and without reducing services and instruction to our undergraduate population. Our solution focuses our graduate instruction on in-person workshops and digital objects (research guides and “How-Do-I?” videos), along with a “toolkit” with scripts, handouts, presentations, and outlines so that, while one librarian may be the expert (e.g. citation management), any librarian can have the …

This study examined the reciprocal relations between self-compassion and romantic relationship variables longitudinally. Participants included a community sample of 107 U.S. adults (46% female, 54% male, Mage = 34.53 years) who were in the same relationship at both data-collection points. The cross-sectional correlational analyses demonstrated that at both time-points, self-compassion was positively associated with both relationship quality and satisfaction. Structural equation modeling was used to test a longitudinal mediation model, which represented a good fit to the data (χ² = 28.49, df = 13, χ²/df = 2.19, p = .008; GFI = .95; CFI = …

The Reliability Of Crowdsourcing: Latent Trait Modeling With Mechanical Turk, Matt Baucum, Steven Rouse Dr., Cindy Miller-Perrin, Elizabeth Mancuso Dr.

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Mechanical Turk, an online crowdsourcing platform, has recently received increased attention in the social sciences as studies continue to suggest its viability as a source for reliable experimental data. Given the ease with which large samples can be quickly and inexpensively gathered, it is worth examining whether Mechanical Turk can provide accurate experimental data for methodologies requiring such large samples. One such methodology is Item Response Theory, a psychometric paradigm that defines test items by a mathematical relationship between a respondent’s ability and the probability of item endorsement. To test whether Mechanical Turk can serve as a reliable source of …

Naked And Afraid: Or, Giving Graduate Students The Clothes And Confidence For Data-Analysis Success, Amanda J. Swygart-Hobaugh M.L.S., Ph.D.

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

Abstract:

While masters- and doctoral-level graduate students in the social sciences are likely to have past undergraduate experience in doing secondary research such as literature reviews, they often have minimal to no experience in collecting and/or analyzing data (be it quantitative or qualitative in nature), a requisite for their completing theses or dissertations. Likewise, they are likely to be crunched for time and money resources that prohibits ambitious collections of new data, and thus they need guidance in finding existing data and accessible research software/tools for their original analyses. This presentation will give an overview of the specialized services I, …

Unique Library Services For Graduate Students: Support Throughout The Graduate Lifecycle, Susan Smith, Erin M. O'Toole, Rebecca Barham

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

In response to changing needs of graduate students, the University of North Texas Libraries have created unique services, spaces, and instruction. The transformation began with the recent creation of the Library Research Support Services (LRSS) department, a department focused on serving graduate students. The department quickly identified needs that fell into two categories: everyday needs and academic lifecycle needs. Everyday needs of graduate students include quiet study and writing space, writing assistance, and research assistance. Academic lifecycle needs are different, as needs vary depending on where a student is in the cycle: new graduate student, graduate student completing coursework, graduate …

A Putative Dual Role For Yorkie In Hippo Pathway Signaling, Caroline Hall Apr 2016

A Putative Dual Role For Yorkie In Hippo Pathway Signaling, Caroline Hall

Celebration of Scholarship 2012-2017

The Hippo Pathway inactivates genes involved in organ size and when aberrant, can lead to cancer. To control organ size, the Hippo Pathway inhibits Yorkie (Yki), a transcriptional co-activator that works with Scalloped (Sd), a DNA binding protein. When active, Yki translocates into the nucleus and initiates transcription. Conversely, when inactive, Yki remains in the cytoplasm. However, my work shows that cytoplasmic, inactive Yki interacts with other proteins in the Hippo Pathway by recruiting them to the plasma membrane. Accordingly, this study challenges the notion that cytoplasmic Yki is inactive and instead, may play a dual role in the Hippo …

Celebration of Scholarship 2012-2017

This study describes the anatomy of the chondrocranium of Lepidochelys olivacea (Cryptodira, Cheloniidae) through embryonic development, and aims to understand the taenia marginalis. Cleared and double-stained embryos were dissected and observed. The taenia marginalis is present as a thin, ribbon-like process that extends posteriorly from the dorsal margin of the planum supraseptale, and was found to be present as a transient anatomical bridge between the planum supraseptale and the otic capsule in a late Stage 24 specimen. Though present and well-formed for a short period of time, the taenia martinalis is quickly resorbed and is absent in all later specimens …

Lactate Dehydrogenase Is Crucial For Tumor Associated Macrophage Protection Of Multiple Myeloma Cells Against Chemotherapy, Carolyn Stierhoff Apr 2016

Lactate Dehydrogenase Is Crucial For Tumor Associated Macrophage Protection Of Multiple Myeloma Cells Against Chemotherapy, Carolyn Stierhoff

Celebration of Scholarship 2012-2017

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a cancer characterized by an accumulation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. Although chemotherapy is the most effective treatment, the majority of patients experience relapse. The major cause of treatment failure is the development of multidrug resistance. Thus, overcoming drug resistance will greatly improve patient survival. The enzyme lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) plays an important role in anaerobic respiration by converting pyruvate into lactate in the absence or low supply of oxygen. It has been observed that tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) present in tumor environments can protect MM from chemotherapy treatment. We discovered that an LDH …

Celebration of Scholarship 2012-2017

Chronic kidney disease (CKD), prevalent in more than 10% of the United States population, is a progressive, degenerative disease affecting the renal function of afflicted individuals. CKD has gained awareness among clinicians due to growing concern about the many complications that arise in patients with CKD. The KDIGO (Kidney Disease; Improving Global Outcomes) 2012 clinical guidelines for the treatment of CKD created uniform measures aimed to improve quality care and effective treatment of the CKD population. This study investigates the extent to which these measures are being implemented and adhered to among providers at the practice level.
