Overcoming The Challenges Of Implementing Standardized Metadata Practices In A Digital Repository, Sai Deng
Overcoming The Challenges Of Implementing Standardized Metadata Practices In A Digital Repository, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
While implementing standards in cataloging digital collections is often a Metadata Librarian’s conscience or inner desire, sometimes it’s a challenge to do so if a system is not built to accommodate such standardized practices. This kind of dilemma is not uncommon in the metadata and digital repository arena. This presentation will address the various challenges in working with metadata in digital repositories such as, name authority control for authors, departments and colleges, type values selection, keywords and subject choices, whether to add linked data URIs to various fields in the records and data discrepancies in harvesting data into the OCLC’s …

Diving Into The University Knowledge Community: Navigating The Expanded Role Of The Metadata Librarian, Sai Deng
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Metadata librarians' engaging in the university knowledge community is becoming a trend in recent years. In preparing for this change, it can be challenging for the metadata librarians to step out of the "back room", engage in scholarly communication and actively participate in the university knowledge community. This presentation discusses the shifting environment, the required changes for the metadata librarians such as developing professional and technical competency, acquiring new knowledge and skills and getting into the new world to be more connected to students, faculty and researchers, and various factors that will affect the situation. It concludes that the best …

Reference Mode Preferences Of Community College And Four-Year College Students, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak
Publications and Research
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the reference service mode preferences of community college (two-year) students and four-year college students.
Methods: The researchers administered a paper-based, face-to-face questionnaire at two institutions within the City University of New York system: Hunter College, a senior college, and Queensborough Community College, a two-year institution. During the summer of 2015, the researchers surveyed 79 participants, asking them to identify their most and least preferred medium for accessing library reference services.
Results: Nearly 75% of respondents expressed a preference for face-to-face reference, while only about 18% preferred remote reference services (online chat, …

Need Vs. Supply Analysis Of The New Haven Public Bus System, Stan Mathis
Yale Day of Data
ABSTRACT:
The aim of the study was to assess how well the public transportation system of New Haven County was matched to the public transit need using publicly available geospatial datasets from state and federal sources. Geospatial bus stop data was extracted from public State of Connecticut data sets. Census tract geography was extracted from US Census TIGER files while census tract aggregated household vehicle access data was queried from the American Community Survey data access server. A census tract’s Need was defined as percentage of households reporting access to zero vehicles; its supply was defined as the number of …

Cultures, Madeline Martinson
International Journal of Undergraduate Community Engagement
This document is a poster I created after making and reading my book to the children on the Bells for Books book mobile. First I created a book about culture and diversity. Once I finished the book I went to the book mobile and read it to the children that were on the bus that day. After reading the book I reflected on culture and diversity and put my conclusions on this poster. The poster rejects on my process through my book Culture and reading it to the children and our class conception of diversity and ethics. I talk about …

Diversity Through Musical Reading, John Waits
International Journal of Undergraduate Community Engagement
This poster is an overview of the children's book I wrote and the research, writing, and reading that went into it. The book uses animals from the main countries that Boise's refugee population comes from as characters and gives them all different musical instruments that they play together to make beautiful music to show that, even though people may be different, it's better when everyone is included.

Teaching And Learning Mathematics In The Ar/Vr Environment, Alexander Vaninsky
Teaching And Learning Mathematics In The Ar/Vr Environment, Alexander Vaninsky
Publications and Research
This presentation discusses teaching and learning mathematics in augmented (AR) or virtual (VR) reality created by a combination of goggles and earphones. It claims that interactive learning in such an environment is more attractive and efficient. It increases motivation and interest in the subject matter. The approach is underlain by the findings of educational neuroscience considering the learning process as the formation of domains in the brain forming mathematics knowledge centers. The teaching process provides sensory excitation and establishes connections among these and other domains. Hardware and software are available in the market. The suggested approach allows for practical implementation …
The Fate Of Methylcyclohexane Methanol In Soil And Effect On Enzyme Activity, William Doggett, Frieda Eivazi
The Fate Of Methylcyclohexane Methanol In Soil And Effect On Enzyme Activity, William Doggett, Frieda Eivazi
Research Posters
Methylcyclohexane methanol (MCHM) is the chemical that leaked into the Elk River, in Charlestown, West Virginia on the 9th of January, 2014, causing state of emergency called for use of drinking water contaminated with the chemical. Methylcyclohexane methanol is an organic compound classified as a saturated higher alicyclic primary alcohol. It is commonly used in air fresheners and as frothing agent for coal processing and cleaning. The full toxicity of this chemical to humans was unknown at the time of spill and there is still lack of information on exact toxic effects of the crude MCHM. In a recent study …

Effect Of Silver Nanoparticles On Select Soil Enzyme Activities Involved In Nutrient Cycling, William Doggett, Frieda Eivazi, Zahra Afrasiabi, L. Jose
Research Posters
Soils are being continuously exposed to large amounts of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), especially silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). These materials can interact with microbial enzyme activity, stability and/or specificity affecting their role in nutrient cycling. Specific enzyme activity measurements have potential to serve as bioindicator in identifying major changes in the soil environment. Present study investigated the effect of AgNPs on soil enzymes known to play a critical role in mineralization of C, N, P and S in the soil. Soil samples were collected from surface layer (0-10 cm) of a Wrengart silt loam series. The study used two sizes (10 and …

Epigenetic Silencing Of Socs3 Expression Contributes To Fibrosis In Crohn’S Disease, Emily T. Marshall, Chao Li, John K. Kuemmerle
Epigenetic Silencing Of Socs3 Expression Contributes To Fibrosis In Crohn’S Disease, Emily T. Marshall, Chao Li, John K. Kuemmerle
MD Student Summer Research Fellowship Program Posters
Identified risk polymorphisms affecting the Jak-STAT3 pathway in patients with Crohn’s disease could affect TGF-β1 and collagen I expression and in the pathway’s negative regulator, SOCS3. Genetic factors, however, account for only ~25% of disease. Epigenetic events also shape gene expression. Recent experiments showed that autocrine IL-6 production in mesenchymal cells, subepithelial myofibroblasts (SEMF) and muscle cells, of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease causes sustained Jak-STAT3 activity, excess TGF-β1 and Collagen I production and fibrosis. SOCS3 paradoxically decreased in these cells. We now identify epigenetic mechanisms that silence SOCS3 expression in SEMF of patients with fibrostenotic Crohn’s disease. In a …

Complicated Catalog - Teaching Students To Use One Search, Jennifer A. W. Joe
Ex Libris Bluegrass Users Group Newsletter
A frequently heard complaint about One Search from the user experience end is that it is "complicated" or "over-whelming," but it has its positive points, too. The key is in teaching patrons who may have never had any experience outside of Google and traditional OPACs how to use it. This presentation covers best practices on how to teach One Search to new users in a thoughtful, less stressful manner using the very tools inherent in the discovery system - and how the thought and practice of teaching searches in One Search differs from the traditional OPAC.
