The Challenges Of College: How Students Cope With Stress, Hilary L. Jenkins, Lisa L. Scherer
The Challenges Of College: How Students Cope With Stress, Hilary L. Jenkins, Lisa L. Scherer
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The purpose of this research is to identify what types of coping mechanisms utilized by college students. Stress plays a significant role in college student’s lives and influences the types of coping mechanisms used. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach to examine work-school conflict, its accompanying demands and how it affects student use of adaptive versus maladaptive coping strategies. One-on-one interviews were conducted with 31 college students who were primarily psychology majors, female, and Caucasian. Results showed that college students who participated in this study were more likely to engage in adaptive coping mechanisms compared with maladaptive coping mechanisms. …
Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
Volunteer Perceptions Of Upward And Downward Communication Facilitate Organizational Commitment, Kelly Prange
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Retaining productive volunteers is an essential issue nonprofit organizations face, as volunteers help extend the services of their target populations. The current study examined upward and downward communication and training as important volunteer management practices with respect to facilitating volunteer engagement and commitment. Using social exchange theory as a framework, the present study investigated the reasons why organizations should stress giving volunteers training and open communication and soliciting feedback from volunteers. Doing so may initiate a social exchange relationship in which volunteers receive training and communication from organizations and in turn become more engaged and committed to the organization. As …
Influence Of Meeting Humor Styles On Meeting Satisfaction, Michael Yoerger
Influence Of Meeting Humor Styles On Meeting Satisfaction, Michael Yoerger
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Drawing from theory on humor styles, impression management, and workplace meetings, we developed a video vignette followed by a survey to examine meeting satisfaction. We began by investigating whether there were differences in meeting satisfaction based on differences in the type of humor utilized. We then investigated how individual differences in impression management affects the perception of affiliative and aggressive humor. We found that there were a variety of statistically significant differences in t-test comparisons of humor conditions utilized. Differences in impression management were not associated with differences in meeting satisfaction in the affiliative or aggressive humor condition. One finding …
The Evaluation Of Carbon Dioxide-Independent Media For Toxoplasma Gondii Growth, Matthew C. Martens
The Evaluation Of Carbon Dioxide-Independent Media For Toxoplasma Gondii Growth, Matthew C. Martens
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Toxoplasma gondii is a human pathogen that plays a role as the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, a disease that produces many deleterious effects for immunocompromised individuals and infants. Current research involving this intracellular parasite requires the use and continues maintenance of costly cell incubators attached to bulky carbon dioxide canisters. To reduce laboratory costs and space requirements, we, therefore, propose a novel procedure by which human foreskin fibroblasts, as well as Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites, may be grown in a commercially available carbon dioxide-independent media. Growth assays utilizing resazurin dye or relative fluorescence from parasites modified with a red fluorescent protein …
Establishment Of Milkweed Seeds Under Different Conditions, Marvin E. Sibrian
Establishment Of Milkweed Seeds Under Different Conditions, Marvin E. Sibrian
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Milkweed is an important food source for many insects and the only food source for monarch caterpillars. Unfortunately, the abundance of milkweed plants has been decreasing over the years due to Roundup Ready® crops and increased herbicide use in agriculture, as well as milkweed habitats being plowed under for increased corn acreage. In hopes of restoring the monarch population, conservation organizations are joining forces to grow as much milkweed as they can and to increase the number of North American milkweed individuals by one billion. However, it is unclear how many seeds must be sown to add one billion milkweed …
Effects Of Whole Body Heating During Warm-Up On Strength, Power, And Flexibility, Trevor Krzyzanowski
Effects Of Whole Body Heating During Warm-Up On Strength, Power, And Flexibility, Trevor Krzyzanowski
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Background/Hypothesis: There has been little research investigating the use of external heat to enhance muscular performance. The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between warming up in a hot (H) and neutral (N) temperature environment on muscle performance. Methods: Seven (M:3/F:4) Division I collegiate athletes (age = 20 ± 1; weight = 78.8 ± 24.7 kg; height = 176.2 ± 7.6 cm; body fat 19.7 ± 11.3%) each completed 2-trials in a randomized, counter-balanced order. Subjects warmed up in a temperature and humidity controlled chamber at 20 °C (N) and 40 °C (H), both at 40% humidity, …
Between-Day Reliability Activity Fluctuations In Young Adults At Baseline And 6-Months Follow-Up, Connor J. Wicks
Between-Day Reliability Activity Fluctuations In Young Adults At Baseline And 6-Months Follow-Up, Connor J. Wicks
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Human Daily Motor Activity (DMA) is characterized by complex temporal fluctuations and scale invariance. DMA is estimated from a time series composed of continuous amounts of activity recorded with the Actigraph GT9X monitor. The purpose of this study was to measure the complex temporal fluctuations in several young healthy adults over a 7-day period. After six months there was a follow-up of another 7-day period. Future collections will involve healthy older adults and adults with Parkinson’s disease. For the first phase of this study, 24 healthy young adults wore the monitor on their non-dominant hand for seven straight days. For …
Comparison Of Self-Paced, Fixed Speed, And Overground Walking, Ryan Hartley
Comparison Of Self-Paced, Fixed Speed, And Overground Walking, Ryan Hartley
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Because treadmills are set at a fixed speed, they constrain subjects to walk differently than walking while overground, where subjects can speed up or slow down. To help alleviate this constraint, an algorithm has been developed that allows the treadmill to change speed according to the subject’s movement. The purpose of this study was to compare self-paced, fixed speed, and overground walking. We hypothesize the walking patterns of the subjects during self-paced walking will be different from fixed speed conditions and more similar to overground. Subjects will complete three 15 minute walking conditions consisting of self-paced, fixed speed, and overground …
Foot Mechanics During Walking With Added Mass, Nikolaos Papachatzis
Foot Mechanics During Walking With Added Mass, Nikolaos Papachatzis
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The ankle and foot system is a combination of flexible and adaptable structures. which are analogous to a spring that absorbs/stores and generates/returns mechanical energy during locomotion. Studies have shown that the foot muscles are able to modulate arch compression during static loading conditions.
Our aim is to determine how humans modulate foot mechanical work across different levels of added loads (0, 15, 30% body weight). We hypothesized that the structures distal to the hindfoot (i.e., Heel Pad, Arch, MTP) will be able to maintain the same net work output during walking across a series of varying loads.
Multi-Robot Informed Path Planning Under Communication Constraints, Brad Woosley
Multi-Robot Informed Path Planning Under Communication Constraints, Brad Woosley
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Autonomous exploration using multiple robots is an important area of research with applications to extraterrestrial exploration. The use of robots to explore environments can reduce the dangers to human explorers in unstructured environments, such as after a disaster or on extraterrestrial planetary surfaces. In these scenarios, the environment is unknown or only coarsely known beforehand, and there is no pre-existing communications infrastructure to use. We propose an algorithm that balances the goals of communicating collected samples back to a base station, collecting samples from areas of the environment which are less known, and spending as little energy to do this. …
Modification Of The Ruiz-Moreno Chikungunya Seir Model, Joseph Devlin
Modification Of The Ruiz-Moreno Chikungunya Seir Model, Joseph Devlin
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The Ruiez-Moreno CHIKV model predicts the outcome of the Chikungunya disease. Chikungunya, a disease similar to the Zika virus, is vector-borne with very little treatment for patients. This experiment looks to find ways to improve the model. The model will still need further improvement, as there is no model that can predict with full certainty. However, a method of modification has been made to expedite the process, the code has been rearranged for easy input and to minimize possibility of unwanted changes, and the control files for comparison have been created. The method to modify the model can be superimposed …
Why Arriving Late To Meetings May Harm Workplace Relationships, Joseph Mroz, Nicole B. Lanowski
Why Arriving Late To Meetings May Harm Workplace Relationships, Joseph Mroz, Nicole B. Lanowski
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Individuals often attend meetings at work to which at least one person arrives late. Building from attributional theories of interpersonal behavior, we conducted an experiment to determine the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of people’s reactions to meeting lateness. Participants read one of eight experimental vignettes that described someone arriving 5 or 15 mins late to an important or unimportant meeting, after which the person who arrived late offered either a controllable or an uncontrollable reason for being late. Participants reported greater anger and a willingness to punish the late arrival who gave a controllable excuse, whereas sympathy and pro-social …
Volunteer Attrition: Reducing Incivility Among Coworkers, Sheridan Trent
Volunteer Attrition: Reducing Incivility Among Coworkers, Sheridan Trent
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
Although volunteers are vital to the success of many organizations, the rate of volunteerism in the US has been decreasing since 2002 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2016). One reason volunteers leave organizations is due to feeling burnt out from volunteer work (Chen & Yu, 2014; Winefield, Xanthopolou, & Metzer, 2012). Although multiple factors have been found to induce burnout in volunteers, studies examining relationships among volunteer coworkers as a potential stressor are sorely lacking. The current study sought to examine coworker incivility as a predictor of volunteer burnout and turnover intentions using Conservation of Resources (COR) theory. COR theory postulates …

From Ad Hoc To Intentional: One Department’S Online Journey, Jennie A. Harrop, Carol Hutchinson, Michelle Shelton
Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital
When George Fox’s Department of Professional Studies offered four online courses in the summer of 2010, the faculty did not know what would come of the experiment. Six years later, the department now offers more than 25 online classes per semester, including one online major, and the program is growing. The majority of DPS students juggle families and full-time work in addition to school, and increasingly students are seeking the convenience of online offerings for both required major and general education courses. With eight regular faculty members, more than 40 adjunct faculty members, and roughly 300 adult degree-completion students, DPS …
