The Effect Of Physical Stress Signals On Conspecific Interactions In Green-And-Black Poison Frogs (Dendrobates Auratus), Gabriella E. Chan, Maxwell A. Kenyon, Summer Ngo, Lee B. Kats

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Amphibian declines have been a major focus of the scientific community for nearly three decades. Many studies describe the leading causes of amphibian decline related to disease, with chytridiomycosis as the most notable example. However, little is known about behavioral conspecific interactions among ill or stressed amphibians, particularly neotropical species. Previous observational research on poison frogs determined that stressed Dendrobates auratus flip onto their backs in a reaction that is similar to fainting in other species. In this study, we examine conspecific interactions of green-and-black poison frogs (D. auratus) with “healthy” and “sick” model frogs, in order to …

Changes In The Proliferation And Gene Expression Of Huvecs In Response To Treatment With Plant Secondary Metabolites, Caleigh Howard

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Medicinal plants have historically been a valuable source of new drugs, and Southern California possesses a rich collection of native plants which have been used as medicines by native people groups for thousands of years. Angiogenesis is the biological process of new blood-vessel growth from endothelial cells. It is an essential part of the wound-healing process, and increased angiogenesis has also been implicated in the growth of some types of cancerous tumors. In this study, extracts of the Southern Californian native plants Red shanks (Adenostoma sparsifolium) and the alkaloid extract of Jimson weed (Datura wrightii) were …

Potential Spread Of The Fungal Pathogen Botryospharea Dothidea From Chaparral Shrubs To Grape Vineyards In The Santa Monica Mountains, Alexandra N. Case, Natalie M. Aguirre, Rodney L. Honeycutt, Stephen D. Davis Mar 2018

Potential Spread Of The Fungal Pathogen Botryospharea Dothidea From Chaparral Shrubs To Grape Vineyards In The Santa Monica Mountains, Alexandra N. Case, Natalie M. Aguirre, Rodney L. Honeycutt, Stephen D. Davis

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

We tested the hypothesis that an opportunistic endophytic fungus, Botryosphaeria dothidea, that frequently infects and causes dieback in species of chaparral shrubs in the Santa Monica Mountains during drought events, may spread to grape vineyards in the Santa Monica Mountains. Recently a dominant chaparral species in coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malosma laurina, has undergone extensive dieback in low elevation, dry sites, in response to historic drought in California, but less dieback in high elevation moist sites. M. laurina frequently grows adjacent grape vineyards. Thus we hypothesized that fungal isolates from a low elevation, dry vineyard …

Marketing Analysis Of Scholarly Journals In A Social World, Hunter Watson

Discovery Day - Prescott

The next methodology to the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) Social Media metrics is to determine if scholarly platforms for future use can benefit the AQR. The AQR authored by Dr. Brent Bowen and Dr. Dean Headley introduced the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) in 1993 as an objective method for comparing and scoring airline performance in areas deemed to be important for consumers. The quantitative metrics from utilizing new marketing techniques have increased the audience members attracted to this report. With a digitalized driven society, social media has been the main benefactor in gaining new attention. Continuing on the process to …

A Longitudinal Analysis On The Cyclical Pattern Of The Us Airline Industry, Michelle Bennett

Discovery Day - Prescott

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) is the nation’s most comprehensive study of airline performance and quality for over two decades. The AQR sets the industry standard, providing consumers and industry watchers a way to compare performance quality among different US airlines using objective performance-based data (Bowen and Headley, 2014). The quantitative weighted average is computed monthly for every airline and divided by the sum of the weight to create the index. Criteria weighted in this formula include baggage handling, customer complaints, denied boarding and on time arrivals. This research employs the application of a longitudinal analysis methodology resulting in finding …

Featured Research

Botryosphaeria dothidea is an opportunistic pathogen found in some of the cavitated branches of the vegetation in the Santa Monica Mountains. In this study, we focused on finding the presence of Botryosphaeria dothidea in Ceanothus spinosus located on Pepperdine University’s campus. We wanted to test this hypothesis because we observed a large amount of dieback in the Ceanothus spinosus population and wanted to identify a possible contributor. Because of the large number of cavitated branches the Ceanothus spinosus contained, we hypothesized they contained fungus. To test this, we took twenty samples of twenty different Ceanothus spinosus, isolated the fungus …

Does A Correlation Exist Between Coping Skills And Economic Realities?, Xeryus Johnson Mar 2018

Does A Correlation Exist Between Coping Skills And Economic Realities?, Xeryus Johnson

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Coping skills are the physiological and behavioral strategies that one employs to negotiate stressful events. (Moskowitz & Folkman, 2004) Those of lower socioeconomic status are exposed to chronic, uncontrollable stress endemics in impoverished environments. (Wadsworth, 2015) Therefore, it can be hypothesized that there is an inverse relationship between adaptive coping skills of and socioeconomic realities. Coping is the body’s way of responding to stress. Any type of perceived threat that a person encounters cause a neuroendocrine reaction of events. It is proposed that atypical self-regulation to chronic, uncontrollable stress is directly associated with environmental adversity. (Wadsworth, 2015) Conceptual framework of …

Exploring Reasons For Opting Out Of Hpv Vaccination Among Patients And Health Care Providers, Megan Masters Mar 2018

Exploring Reasons For Opting Out Of Hpv Vaccination Among Patients And Health Care Providers, Megan Masters

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that can infect both males and females, potentially causing genital warts, vaginal, cervical, anal, and vulvar cancers. According to CDC guidelines, the HPV vaccine can be given to boys and girls age 9 to 26 (CDC, 2017). Although cases of HPV have dropped as the number of HPV vaccinations rise, vaccine rates are still far below the Health People 2020 target of 80% coverage. With current rates of 49.5% coverage in females, and 37.5% in males through 2017, it is evident that current routes of vaccine education are not adequate (CDC, 2017).
