The Influence Of Politics On Modern Art: A Curated Exhibit Of Art Reflecting The 2016 Presidential Election, Naama Malomet
Senior Honors Projects
This project explores the ways in which recent politics in America has inspired contemporary artists to engage in the current political climate and use art as a means of expressing political ideals. Art has been, and always will be, used as one of the ways artists express opinions and ideas. Art engages individuals in visual dialogue, creating conversations between the artist and viewer. It has the power to influence and inspire viewers, directing them towards new ideas and opinions as well as new perspectives on social and political issues. Throughout the history of art, politics and social issues have inspired …

Mental Health & The Modern Educator, Samantha Nousak
Mental Health & The Modern Educator, Samantha Nousak
Honors Projects
Mental health issues are far more prevalent than most are aware; according to the National Institute of Mental Health (2017), 49.5% of 13 to 18-year-olds will qualify for any mental illness. Mental health concerns will impact students in every single classroom, yet curriculum for Education majors does not include more than rudimentary information on this topic. This presentation aims to provide basic facts pertaining to mental health (including incidence rates, educators' responsibilities, and the impact mental health issues can have on students), discuss broad strategies to employ with students with mental health concerns (basic do's and do not's), and provide …

Pediatric Neurocognition And Literacy Acquisition, Laurie Shapiro
Pediatric Neurocognition And Literacy Acquisition, Laurie Shapiro
Graduate Publications
Research- based practice in the teaching profession has had a growing importance over the past few decades. While the field of neurocognitive literacy is infantile, researchers have begun looking at how instruction can be impacted by understanding brain capabilities when learning to become literate in a language. This has been accomplished through neuroimaging to explain how a child’s brain functions on a neurological level when engaging in literacy tasks. Research suggests the reading brain is flexible and dynamic. This has been determined through examination of various neurocognitive systems that explain how functional and anatomical brain alterations can occur in children …

Course Designing With Maps, Marsha Beal
Course Designing With Maps, Marsha Beal
Andrews University Teaching and Learning Conference
According to the Chicago Center for Teaching, “planning a course is arguably the key ingredient in pedagogical success.” A great metaphor for course design is like planning a trip to some place you have never gone before. To get there efficiently, a good road map is a must; because without one the driver may end up there eventually but not without detours and missed directions. The great news for teachers is that there are many (20+) instructional design “maps” called models. The ADDIE, Kirkpatrick, and SAM models are three of those models. This session will give an overview of each …
The Right To Dream: Educators Supporting Undocumented Students In Boston Public Schools, Heidi K. Rausch, Claudia Martinez
The Right To Dream: Educators Supporting Undocumented Students In Boston Public Schools, Heidi K. Rausch, Claudia Martinez
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
Undocumented youth are among the most vulnerable groups in the United States. Their achievements are many and the obstacles they face sometimes seem unsurmountable. There are a few immigration policies that assist these students, but not nearly enough. Despite the challenges they face (financial, lack of information, institutional, anxiety, increased responsibility) and the invisibility that comes from silence regarding their immigration status, many are indeed able to achieve personal and academic success. Key to that success are the families, teachers, counselors and other adults in their lives. This presentation highlights the work of Unafraid Educators, a committee of the Boston …
Making Visible: More Of The Picture, Sarah Slavick
Making Visible: More Of The Picture, Sarah Slavick
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
In Linda Nochlin’s essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?, “ she demonstrates how, for centuries, institutional and societal structures had made it “impossible for women to achieve artistic excellence, or success, on the same footing as men, no matter what the potency of their so-called talent, or genius.” As the Guerilla Girls noted, only 1 woman had a solo museum show in NY in 1985, and, in 2015, 30 years later, it wasn’t much better with 1 at the Guggenheim, Met and Whitney, and 2 at MOMA. On International Women’s Day, March 1, 2017, I began a …
Ego Development, Defense Mechanisms, And Adaption In Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals, Jack Girardi
Ego Development, Defense Mechanisms, And Adaption In Transgender And Gender Nonconforming Individuals, Jack Girardi
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This presentation talks about ego development, starting in early childhood, for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals and how that in turn manifests into defense mechanisms. These defense mechanisms are being misattributed to other factors as a result of societal stigmas that also play out in the immediate home, school community, and clinical atmospheres of the individual. Early psychoanalytic theories are used to explain the transgender and gender nonconforming individual's negative sense of self and low self-worth. This negative sense of self is then transformed into defense mechanisms which then have the power to destroy interpersonal relationships, career development, and academic …
Do It Yourself But Never Alone: Creating Social Change From Punk To Politics, Joe Mageary
Do It Yourself But Never Alone: Creating Social Change From Punk To Politics, Joe Mageary
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
This presentation will use punk rock culture as a context within which to address the question of how decentralized social movements can focus the energy of concerned citizens on direct action and meaningful change-making. Goals of the presentation include: addressing how do-it-yourself (DIY) punk culture is engaging in social activism as a response to social injustice; demonstrating how punk is using the arts for social engagement; and providing an example of how punk can be a form of empowerment via radical education.
These points will be illustrated through the presentation of original qualitative research conducted by the presenter during a …
Assessing Bias Among Boston Monument Attendees, Allison Rodgers, Keren Tersooi
Assessing Bias Among Boston Monument Attendees, Allison Rodgers, Keren Tersooi
Lesley University Community of Scholars Day
Boston is a city, which is conflicted by the disparity between its liberal beliefs, as it is ranked the 5th most liberal city in the U.S, and the reality of its culture (Tausanovitch & Warshaw, 2013; Johnson, 2017). Studying Boston monuments, which are a large tourist attraction and significant financial revenue stream, can provide additional insight into the contributing factors surrounding Boston’s racist reputation (Southern Poverty Law Center, 2016; Gaertner & Dovidio, 2005; Franca & Monteiro, 2013; Scennell & Gifford, 2017; Gurler & Ozer, 2013). Relevant theories such as implicit bias, aversive racism, place attachment, compositional hierarchy, and the …

In this session, Sandy Avila, Science Librarian, Ven Basco, Engineering Librarian, and Sarah Norris, Scholarly Communication Librarian will share information about open access, predatory publishing, and how to differentiate between credible and predatory journals, with an emphasis on STEM-focused publications. Areas to be explored will include how to identify spam email, fake metrics, predatory conferences, and other issues associated …
Does The Fungal Pathogen (Botryosphaeria Dothidea) Exceed The Dehydration Tolerance Of Its Chaparral Host?, Cristian M. Garcia
Does The Fungal Pathogen (Botryosphaeria Dothidea) Exceed The Dehydration Tolerance Of Its Chaparral Host?, Cristian M. Garcia
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
We tested the hypothesis that an opportunistic endophytic fungus Botryosphaeria dothidea that frequently infects and causes dieback in several different species of chaparral shrubs in the Santa Monica Mountains continues to elongate and grow in host tissues at dehydration levels that exceed host survival. This was done by collecting several large branches from the field from three dominant species of co-occurring chaparral shrubs, Malosma laurina, Ceanothus spinosus, and Ceanothus megacarpus. We allowed branches to dehydrate at increasing lengths of time, from a few days to one week, in an air-conditioned laboratory, then sealed in plastic bags to allow tissuewater equilibration, …
Investigation Of Antimicrobial Properties Of Rhus Ovata Extracts, Sydney T. Adams
Investigation Of Antimicrobial Properties Of Rhus Ovata Extracts, Sydney T. Adams
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
Native peoples of Southern California historically used a variety of local plants as remedies for illnesses. Chaparral species such as Rhus ovata (sugar bush) were widely available and were used to ease headaches, coughs and chest pains, and colds. In light of the historical importance of this plant and other chaparral species, recent fungal pathogen-induced diebacks of Malosma laurina, a species closely related to R. ovata, have raised questions regarding the innate defenses of these plants against fungal pathogens. We attempted to scientifically evaluate the traditional medicinal use of R. ovata and its antifungal resistance by testing two …
Left-Wing And Right-Wing Terrorism In The United States, Alex Rant, Paul Jones, Nathanael Robinson
Left-Wing And Right-Wing Terrorism In The United States, Alex Rant, Paul Jones, Nathanael Robinson
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
This paper assesses whether there is causality between Left-Wing and Right-Wing Terrorist attacks in the United States. A Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) Model is estimated for the two variables. A Granger Causality test and Impulse Response Functions are examined to understand the relationship between the two variables. Both terrorist attacks appear to Granger Cause each other, but an analysis of the Impulse Response Functions reveals that Right-Wing Terrorism yields a stronger response from Left-Wing groups than Left-Wing terrorism does from Right-Wing groups. Nonetheless, there are strong elements of causality and response between the two groups.

Computational Investigation Of The Ring-Opening Homo- And Co-Polymerizations Of Lactide And Ε-Caprolactone, Diego Garcia, Benjamin Wilson, Joe Fritsch
Computational Investigation Of The Ring-Opening Homo- And Co-Polymerizations Of Lactide And Ε-Caprolactone, Diego Garcia, Benjamin Wilson, Joe Fritsch
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
The mechanism for the ring-opening polymerization of lactide and ε-caprolactone is presented here with an aluminum-centered catalyst featuring a tridentate ligand and two alkoxide initiating ligands. In each homopolymerization, the addition of electron-withdrawing groups on the tridentate ligand lowers the activation energy of the reaction by increasing the electrophilicity of the central Aluminum. We further investigated the polymerizations by comparing the energy difference between copolymerization and homopolymerization following the initial ring opening as well as the potential for dual polymer chains from the insertion of both initiating ligand. Single chain polymerization is favored in every case, due to lower bond …
