Vocabulary! Supporting Diverse Students’ Mastery Of The Vocabulary, Lissa Power-Defur
Summer Literacy Institute
Mastering vocabulary is challenging for second language learners, students with disabilities, and students who are at risk. Given the vast number of words students must master prior to graduation (over 100,000), it is impossible for teachers and specialists to teach students all the words they need to know. Hart and Risley’s landmark study of the language of children from diverse families informs us that all school personnel need to focus on vocabulary. The Virginia Department of Education’s analysis of students performance on the Standards of Learning indicates that weaknesses in vocabulary knowledge adversely effect student’s performance in the general curriculum …

Leading School-Based Coaching To Evaluate Open Education Resources, Kathryn Moyle
Digital learning research
This presentation was a people's choice session at the 2018 ISTE conference and engaged participants in conversations about coaching approaches that when coupled with strategies to evaluate Open Educational Resources (OER) can build the capacity of teachers and improve the learning by students. The session provided participants with opportunities to discuss leadership approaches to the evaluation of OER resources that are consistent with education policies, build the capacity of educators and improve the quality of learning by students; and coaching methods for school leaders that enables the identification, analysis, curation and incorporation of OER resources into classroom practices.

Using Experiential Learning In Course Curriculum: The Case Of A Core Engineering Graphics Course, Martha Marie Snyder, Manuel Salinas, Molly J. Scanlon
CCAC Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
This work-in-progress paper overviews how an experiential education program was established at a private, non-profit university in the southeast, describes the process for certifying experiential courses using a formal course review process and qualification rubric, and details the case of a freshman engineering graphics course.
Grounded in the early works of Dewey, Lewin, and Piaget, experiential learning theory has become increasingly popular in higher education. Experiential learning serves as a foundation for lifelong learning and the development of the whole self as a citizen, family member and human being (Kolb, 2015). Austin and Rust (2015) define experiential learning as “‘hands-on’ …

A library construction project led our library’s Science & Engineering Department to take on a massive evaluation of the entire science print collection and reduce the collection footprint by at least 36% within a 12 month period. In order to improve access, reduce the footprint, strengthen the robustness of our collection, and complete the project in an effective and timely manner, a methodology of how to choose, select, evaluate, and move the entire collection of over 360,000 items had to be established and vetted. A plan was developed between the library’s Science & Engineering Department and teams from collection development, …

An Inspirational Talk about Task Management and Team Motivation:
Managing large-scale digitization projects in academic environment with a blend of full-time and part-time staff and handling daily collaboration with project partners, advisory board and outsourcing vendors can be very stressful. Luckily, nowadays, there are free browser-based apps that sync with mobile apps and bring structure into the project mess. In this session, the panelist will share her 3+ years’ experience in successfully managing large-scale digitization projects with very rigid deadlines, limited human resources, multiple production lines and dozens of milestones along the way. To a great extent, the high productivity …

For our service learning project, our group decided to make dog treats and sell them to raise money for the local animal shelter. On the side of making dog treats, we also accepted blanket donations and cash donations. It was more difficult than anticipated to sell the dog treats but we eventually did it and raise around $70 for the animal shelter to use to keep the animals warm and healthy through the winter. There were challenges in the beginning trying to meet up with everybody and assign specific duties to group members but overall we were successful and learned …

Sinonimia Y Disponibilidad Léxica, Orlando Alba
Sinonimia Y Disponibilidad Léxica, Orlando Alba
Faculty Publications

In 2015, the Libraries began scanning theses and dissertations that were housed in our offsite storage facility. Many of these were single copies that were not held by any other library in the world, so we have insured their long term preservation in both print and electronic forms. We began scanning theses and dissertations in a then-cramped Gunnin Architecture Library, and are now scanning theses and dissertations housed in Cooper. The digitization process results in the removal of the circulating copies from Cooper and Gunnin, the creation of an electronic copy that is accessible anywhere on campus, and one non-circulating …

How many times do you discover duplicated content in your site? How often do you find yourself linking endlessly from one section of your site to another in order to make passageways for users between two different areas for similar content? This session will explain how creating, extending and using multiple taxonomies to tag content types can: 1) help reduce or eliminate senseless duplication, 2) allow re-cycling of content through views which aggregate like tags into single locations, 3) reduce content editor work time and errors, and 4) improve user experience of your site content by enhancing discoverability. Examples will …

Clemson University and the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) have collaborated since 2010 to develop the Open Parks Network, an open repository of over 230,000 digital objects and metadata records chronicling the diverse cultural and natural history of our nation’s parks, historic sites, and other protected areas. Initially funded by an Institute of Museum and Library Services National Leadership Grant that ended in 2014, this joint effort to deliver wider public access to the unique resources located in NPS libraries, museums, and archives across the U.S. and territories is an intriguing case study in the dynamics of a relationship between …
