Examining Risk Factors That Inhibit Postpartum Breastfeeding For The Rural Population: An Integrated Review Of Literature, Kiara Porties
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Breastmilk is a crucial food for children’s health and development, by providing all vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antibodies that children need to grow and thrive. Organizations worldwide recommend only giving an infant breast-milk for the first 6 months of life (no other food or water), and breastfeeding (BF) for two years or beyond. Many mothers do not breastfeed their infant despite the many benefits of breastmilk and recommendations. Determining risk factors for non-initiation and early cessation of breastfeeding will allow nurses to address concerns, improving breastfeeding outcomes.
Objective: The purpose of an integrative literature review was to determine …

Medication Compliance In Elderly Alzheimer Latinos When The Caregiver Is A Family Member, Yolanda Gonzalez
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: As the Latino population is expected to expand in coming decades, it will increase cases of Alzheimer’s disease among the elderly in this group. Culture values deem family members to undertake the caregiving role of their elderly Alzheimer Latino member. The caregiver role includes that the elderly complies with the treatment regime, specifically medication compliance. Equally, the needs of the family caregivers need to be examined to determine the effects of culture, which can contribute to medication adherence.
Objectives: The purpose was to explore the needs of family caregivers and the factors of medication compliance with …

Migration Data And Brain Train Trends And Impacts Panel Discussion, Jennifer Zarek, David J. Drozd, Jill Heese
CPAR Presents: A Data and Research Series for Community Impact
Nebraska has historically suffered from a net outmigration of residents. In more recent decades, while the state has been able to achieve net inmigration overall, it still has net losses domestically with other states, specifically among non-Hispanic Whites and those with higher education. This has led to a shortage of skilled workers in key fields, an issue cited repeatedly as a top concern for area businesses and policy makers. See the numbers and trends, learn the strengths and weaknesses of various data sources and ways to analyze this issue, and the impacts that outmigration has. Our panel of experts includes …

I wrote my story book based on diversity and to show empathy to people with differences. To teach kids that we are not all the same and yet each of us has our own value to this world. I wrote the book based on my family's dog and kitten and how they live with one another. The end result is that we just need to show love to each other in order to accept our differences.

Biology
Malosma laurina is a species of chaparral shrub that dominates coastal exposures of the Santa Monica Mountains of southern California. Between 2012 and 2016, protracted drought with half normal rainfall over a five-year period (175 mm), led to severe dieback, exceeding 50% whole plant mortality at some sites. The drought dissipated in 2017 with an annual rainfall that exceeded the 140-yr normal by 108 mm. As a result of this elevated annual rainfall in 2017, we were interested in documenting the potential for full recovery of Malosma laurina as a keystone species of coastal chaparral shrub communities. We tested the …

STAR Program Research Presentations
Diels-Alder chemistry is utilized for a myriad of commercial applications during polymer synthesis, ranging from self-healing materials to heat responsive materials to emulsion coatings. In particular, the ability to regulate and control the amount and type of functional group linkages is key component for polymer applications. A common strategy that is employed is the use of phenolic maleimide as a dienophile during Diels-Alder synthesis to control the linkages on a polymer, which determines its properties and functionality. This summer was the beginning of a project to prepare a commercial scale, water-based emulsion floor coating/polish. The first step in this project …

Increasing Voter Turnout In Kentucky Elections, Luke Williams, Carter Stinnett, Mckenna Moore
GSP at Murray State University
CONCEPT STATEMENT
Due to significantly low voter participation in Kentucky elections (as low as 11% turnout in specific counties’ primary elections) the need to increase voter turnout in specific Kentucky counties and across the state has become paramount. Research and our team’s own understanding has led us to conclude that passing a bill that adds a voter education course to Kentucky high school graduation curriculum will better Kentucky democracy by increasing voter turnout.

Solar & Rain Catching Canopy "Urban Oasis" 1.1, Afolabi Ibitoye, Alexander Aptekar
Publications and Research
Accumulation of water runoff during rain storms affects New York City’s combination water system, forcing water treatment plants to release untreated excess water. Rather than allow this grey water to overfill the sewer system, pocket parks and gardens can be used to absorb rainfall. By harnessing nature’s resources through today’s technology we can also create solar and rain catching canopies to beautify, educate, and bring growth and social awareness to local businesses.
In order to design the canopies to collect the maximum amount of rainwater and maximize solar collection, we analyzed expected rainfall and optimal solar angles. The canopies will …
