Tasteful Cookie Lingo, Sheldon Baringer Mar 2020

Tasteful Cookie Lingo, Sheldon Baringer

Scholars Week

In stores today, several brands of cookies use selective word choices directed towards the consumer, for example, by using the words organic or natural. Prior research has analyzed in a similar fashion, but to my knowledge has not used this specific test group. In this research, I show how packaging for cookies affect buyer’s choice, as well as, price in comparison to health. Importantly, as claims on package towards a healthier product increase, so does price. I further examine how cost changes the focus of the product from healthy to delicious, or bulk size, in order to demonstrate how consumers …

Smart Guns, The Law, And The Second Amendment, Dru Stevenson Mar 2020

Smart Guns, The Law, And The Second Amendment, Dru Stevenson

Penn State Law Review Symposia

Smart guns, which originally meant personalized guns that only the owner could fire, had a false start as a promising new technology several years ago. Nevertheless, policymakers have shown renewed interest in the wake of highly publicized incidents of gun violence, as well as advances in technology. The first generation of smart guns foundered on problems with the reliability of the technology, as well as a legislative misstep that would have banned all other guns as soon as smart guns appeared in the retail market, triggering massive boycotts of certain manufacturers and dealers, and a subsequent abandonment of the project …

Standing Under The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act, Michael J. O'Connor Mar 2020

Standing Under The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act, Michael J. O'Connor

Penn State Law Review Symposia

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) provides civil and criminal penalties for computer intrusion. Current scholarship seeks to determine when a putative defendant has accessed a system without authorization. But no academic articles address who can bring suit for the intrusion. The system owner seems the natural complainant; after all, the CFAA punishes cyber-trespass. But the few courts to address the issue thus far have come to a surprising and contrary conclusion: anyone with confidential information on the system may bring suit. This turns the CFAA from a cyber-trespass statute into a more expansive tool, guarding against trade secret …

On-Demand Aviation: Governance Challenges Of Urban Air Mobility ("Uam"), Timothy M. Ravich Mar 2020

On-Demand Aviation: Governance Challenges Of Urban Air Mobility ("Uam"), Timothy M. Ravich

Penn State Law Review Symposia

The first generation that has never known a world without smartphones and social media may be close to making the world forget about traditional cars. Investment is pouring into urban air mobility (“UAM”)—the local, on-demand movement of people and goods by air using a range of piloted and semi- and fully autonomous electric aircraft that take off and land vertically. In fact, the innovation of aerial ridesharing at scale—a technology that is still very much associated with the 1960s cartoon series “The Jetsons”—may be at market as soon as 2025, according to some estimates.

UAM—which is also referred to as …

To be eligible to speak in the series, each student must have used resources from the Special Collections Division as part of their work. This initiative highlights the research graduate students are engaged in, and draws attention to the university’s …

Librarian At The Colloquium: Delivering Unique Library Content For Phd Students, Susan Franzen Mar 2020

Librarian At The Colloquium: Delivering Unique Library Content For Phd Students, Susan Franzen

Transforming Libraries for Graduate Students

PhD students have unique needs and require different resources and services from the library than undergraduates, which is especially true of professionals in a nursing program. As clinicians, many do not have experience with the research and writing intensive requirements of a doctoral degree. The majority have not taken classes for years, and their master’s degrees were more hands-on, clinically-based. They often do not feel confident in their ability to search the literature, read closely, or write expansively. A unique avenue through which to meet their needs and share library resources is a PhD colloquium course.

Students take the colloquium …

Increasing Student Academic Outcomes Through Intentional Layering Of Academic Intervention And Navigation Supports, Heather Krenzer, Donna Meyer Ms

National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference

EnCompass: Resources for Learning, an educational non-profit organization in Rochester NY, established in 2002, started providing targeted academic support to students through small group instruction, teaching study skills and executive functioning skills, test preparation, and after school programming through collaboration with the Rochester City School District and several local charter schools. While these programs and services directly supported students’ academic progress, it became increasingly clear that many students who need the additional support had sporadic attendance, and in some cases faced much greater barriers as a result traumatic life experiences, including living in conditions of poverty. The organization determined that …

In particular, insufficient testosterone production can have a detrimental effect on spermatogenesis and fertility. Few studies have explored the potential social, environmental, physiological and physical factors that influence bull testosterone levels in a zoo environment. The present study will collect endocrine and metabolic information from weekly fecal and blood serum samples taken over the course of the six-month study period. Social and environmental data will be collected in a survey provided to the institutions. Results will highlight the key factors contributing to fluctuations in testosterone …

A Melting Pot Of Medications: Issues Regarding Over-Prescribing In Dementia Populations, Angela Gifford Mar 2020

A Melting Pot Of Medications: Issues Regarding Over-Prescribing In Dementia Populations, Angela Gifford

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Over-prescribing is an issue faced by many in the older population, but dementia patients statistically experience higher prescribing rates of potentially inappropriate medications compared to their peers. There are currently no FDA approved medications available for the direct treatment of dementia, but drug classes like anticholinergics and psychotropics are used for the management of behavioral symptoms associated with the disease. These drugs can cause negative side-effects in the dementia populations including gastrointestinal issues, neurological issues, increased hospitalizations, and increased mortality rates within this group. Most troubling, the benefits that are supposed to occur from taking these drugs have been show …

Combined Berry Extract And Bromelain Supplement Improves Blood Pressure, Endothelial Function, And Skeletal Muscle Oxygenation Status In Healthy Young Adults, Tesean K. Wooden

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is associated with the manifestation of increased levels of oxidative stress and inflammation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production may cause damage to the vasculature that can lead to diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and atherosclerosis. Anthocyanins are the largest class of flavonoid that are found in vegetables and fruit. Therefore, the combination of anthocyanins and bromelain may be an ideal intervention for improving or maintaining cardiovascular health. We sought to examine the effects of this combination of powerful antioxidants within healthy young adults.

Young healthy adults (n=18) volunteered to participate in this study. Participants were randomly assigned …

Widowers experience challenges related to identity confusion4, depression1, role changes10, and financial stress4, all of which can adversely impact functioning at work. These challenges exist for widowers who continue in their current employment after the death of their spouse, as well as for those who may enter the world of work out of necessity upon …

Pharmacist-Prescribed Birth Control: A Policy Analysis, Brianna Full Mar 2020

Pharmacist-Prescribed Birth Control: A Policy Analysis, Brianna Full

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Although unintended pregnancy in the United States has steadily decreased from 2008, rates are still unacceptably high as almost half (42%) of all pregnancies are not wanted or timed correctly (Finer & Zolna). In 2011, 2.8 million of the 6.1 million pregnancies in the United States each year were unintended. Public health professionals are worried about unintended pregnancy because research shows that unwanted or mistimed pregnancies come with associations to adverse maternal and child health outcomes, such as delayed prenatal care, premature birth, and negative physical and mental health effects for children (Frost, Frohwirth & Zolna, 2016). Also, two-thirds (68%) …

Psycho-Physiological Reactions To Automated Leadership, Seth Hackleman Mar 2020

Psycho-Physiological Reactions To Automated Leadership, Seth Hackleman

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

We all remember the 2008 Disney Pixar film Wall-E. This amazing children’s movie highlights the relationship between two robots and a human pilot on a mission to save the planet. Advances in artificial intelligence and computer technology are enabling new and exciting opportunities for humans to interact with machines. Where humans often change jobs or inevitably retire, machines can be employed for lifetimes. This fact makes them prime candidates for replacing human leaders in some circumstances to avoid the knowledge loss that can occur when a human leader changes position or no longer works in an organization. While human-to-human leadership …

High-Throughput Sequencing Pipeline Tool Analysis - Staphylococcus Aureus, Justin Fay Mar 2020

High-Throughput Sequencing Pipeline Tool Analysis - Staphylococcus Aureus, Justin Fay

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

In this project, I compared the tools used at each step of the high-throughput sequencing pipeline used to detect single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s). There are 11 sequences I utilized from my mentor, Dr. Kate Cooper, on this project (pertaining to Staphylococcus aureus) and I used those in the sequencing pipeline. I evaluated different tools by using different ones at different steps of the pipeline. By doing this, I was able to see how close or far the outputs are by only changing one factor. It is also important to note that, with each online tool comes its own sets of parameters. …

Automated Tool Support - Repairing Security Bugs In Mobile Applications, Larry Singleton Mar 2020

Automated Tool Support - Repairing Security Bugs In Mobile Applications, Larry Singleton

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Cryptography is often a critical component in secure software systems. Cryptographic primitive misuses often cause several vulnerability issues. To secure data and communications in applications, developers often rely on cryptographic algorithms and APIs which provide confidentiality, integrity, and authentication based on solid mathematical foundations. While many advanced crypto algorithms are available to developers, the correct usage of these APIs is challenging. Turning mathematical equations in crypto algorithms into an application is a difficult task. A mistake in cryptographic implementations can subvert the security of the entire system. In this research, we present an automated approach for Finding and Repairing Bugs …

My research focused on answering the …

Characterization Of Dimerization Domains On The Mannose-6-Phosphate/Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 Receptor, Tyler Degener Mar 2020

Characterization Of Dimerization Domains On The Mannose-6-Phosphate/Insulin-Like Growth Factor 2 Receptor, Tyler Degener

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

The mannose-6-phosphate/insulin-like growth factor 2 (M6P/IGF2) receptor is a transmembrane protein with the ability to sequester growth factors from the extracellular matrix. This behavior links the receptor to tumor suppression. On a structural level, the extracellular portion of the protein is segmented into 15 homologous repeats, which can be divided further into 5 triplet domains, labelled 1-3, 4-6, 7-9, 10-12, and 13-15. Each triplet receptor displays its own unique ligand binding affinity, including the ability to form dimers with triplets on a second M6P/IGF2 receptor. In fact, previous studies indicate that this protein functions optimally when dimerized. Thus, the purpose …
