Designing Dape- Inhibitors Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Kristeen Bebla Apr 2021

Designing Dape- Inhibitors Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, Kristeen Bebla

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Development of new classifications of inhibitors are essential in order to control infectious diseases. Currently the only antibiotics available follow two approaches: inhibition of cell wall remodeling and protein synthesis. DapE is part of the succinylase biosynthetic pathway and is important to the production of lysine and mDap (meso-diaminopimelate) both of which synthesize protein and bacterial peptidoglycan cell wall remodeling. Due to increasing bacterial resistance, a new method of treatment is critical through inhibition of the enzymatic activity of DapE. There is no evidence of DapE in mammals, therefore, inhibition should be selective in thwarting bacterial growth. High-Throughput Screening (HiTS) …

Detecting Polyomaviruses In The Urinary Microbiome, Rita Mormando Apr 2021

Detecting Polyomaviruses In The Urinary Microbiome, Rita Mormando

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The polyomaviruses JC virus (JCPyV) and BK virus (BKPyV) are thought to be common viruses in the human urinary tract, and prior studies estimate JCPyV infects between 20-80% of older adults and BKPyV infects between 65-90% of individuals by age 10. These estimates largely stem from PCR-based tests. Recent shotgun metagenomes of the urinary microbiota have similarly reported the presence of these two polyomaviruses based on sequence homology searches. However, JCPyV and BKPyV encode for the same six genes and share 75% nucleotide sequence identity across their genomes. This prompted our in-depth investigation into the detection of and distinguishing between …

Gene Annotation Of Heterochromatic Dna Across. D. Ananassae Species, Trisha A. Patel Apr 2021

Gene Annotation Of Heterochromatic Dna Across. D. Ananassae Species, Trisha A. Patel

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Heterochromatic regions are expressed in a temporal and spatial manner. One example is the Muller F element of Drosophila melanogaster. The goal of this project is to provide insights into the evolutionary impacts of changes in chromosome size. Therefore, it is necessary to have gene annotations for genes on the heterochromatic F-element and the control D-element for comparison across Drosophila species. As part of the GEP, we annotated CG7458 and Chitin synthase 2 (Chs2). This annotation will contribute to an understanding of how eukaryotic genomes help identify DNA characteristics for the regulation of genes in heterochromatic regions.

Bacteriophage Characterization Of Isolates From The Human Urinary Microbiome, Zubia Merchant Apr 2021

Bacteriophage Characterization Of Isolates From The Human Urinary Microbiome, Zubia Merchant

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The interactions of microbiota in the urinary tract may give rise to disease formation and progression. Escherichia coli is widely studied for its association with UTIs and other urological diseases. Many urinary E. coli strains harbor bacteriophages (phages) within their genomes. Generally speaking, phagesdrive bacterial evolution and diversity. They also can carry genes coding for virulence factors, antibiotic resistance, and toxins, thus contributing to their host’s overall fitness and community interactions. The role of E. coli-infecting phages within the urinary tract is unknown. We were able to induce phage from urinary isolates of E. coli. These phages were plated on …
