Participation In Curriculum And Cultural Ambassador Group To Enhance Student Belongingness, Jake Tuft, Jacob Schvaneveldt

Annual Research Symposium

COVID-19 negatively impacted students' abilities to participate in live, in-person events; students were unable to interact with peers or build relationships critical to success and well-being. Quarantine, social distancing and video conferencing did not create this problem however, it simply amplified the fact that dental students seemingly lack camaraderie and a sense of belongingness. The Curriculum and Cultural Ambassador group was created to allow students to bond over shared goals in the hopes of improving their experiences within dental school. This group gives students the ability to “Be the Change” on campus and enact real-time change to foster a sense …

Knowledge of Relative Energy Deficiency Among Collegiate Athletes

Low energy availability (LEA) can produce negative health and performance effects for collegiate athletes. It is defined as a deficit between the athlete’s caloric intake and the energy expended during competition or training. The body is then unable to support certain physiological functions that are needed to maintain optimal health. One component of the female athlete triad is disordered eating which can result in low energy availability. Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport is an extension of the female athlete triad, created to take a more holistic approach and include male athletes as …

Human Adaptation And Morphological Variation: Expanding Diversity In Anatomy Curriculum, Jordan Cass, Cooker Storm Mar 2022

Human Adaptation And Morphological Variation: Expanding Diversity In Anatomy Curriculum, Jordan Cass, Cooker Storm

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Introduction: The recent upturn in our nation’s socio-political conversation has fueled interest in ensuring that college curricula is diverse and inclusive. Because human anatomy is ubiquitous across colleges, it may be a valuable avenue to purposefully incorporate topics of diversity in a way that positively impacts our socio-cultural relationships. Providing students with a scientific understanding of our visible differences may mitigate subconscious bias when we see others who have different features. Purpose: We investigated the biogeographical factors that contribute to the morphological variability of the face, hair, and body size; with the secondary aim of developing diverse and …

Isolation Of Oral Bacterial Dna For 16s Rrna Sequencing To Determine Nitrate-Sensitive Oral Microbiota Following Acute Beetroot Juice Supplementation, Luka Sharabidze, Leah Stiemsma, Courtney Merrill, Chandler Riley, Maya Hammer, Ryan Kenney, Alyssa Riley, Katie Price, Adam Pennell, Rachel Tan Mar 2022

Isolation Of Oral Bacterial Dna For 16s Rrna Sequencing To Determine Nitrate-Sensitive Oral Microbiota Following Acute Beetroot Juice Supplementation, Luka Sharabidze, Leah Stiemsma, Courtney Merrill, Chandler Riley, Maya Hammer, Ryan Kenney, Alyssa Riley, Katie Price, Adam Pennell, Rachel Tan

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Dietary nitrate (NO3-) supplementation, provided as beetroot juice, improves cardiovascular, cognitive, and contractile function by augmenting nitric oxide (NO) biosynthesis; however, the specific taxa responsible, and whether NO3- ingestion can promote a favorable microbial composition to produce NO is yet to be established. To determine whether acute NO3- supplementation is associated with specific microbial taxa in females, 15 healthy adult females consumed an acute dose of NO3--depleted beetroot juice (PL) and NO3--rich beetroot juice (BR). Bacterial DNA from the buccal cells were isolated for subsequent 16s DNA sequencing for preserved regions in their 16s rRNA gene. Concentrations were assessed with …

Endogenous Cftr Expression In Human Epithelial Cell Lines, Zithlaly Amezquita Mar 2022

Endogenous Cftr Expression In Human Epithelial Cell Lines, Zithlaly Amezquita

Undergraduate Research Conference

CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane-conductance Regulator) is a plasma membrane protein that functions as a chloride ion channel on many epithelial cells. There are over 1000 mutations that affect the function of this protein; however, the most common mutation is DF508. CFTR mutations target many secretory organs like pancreas and lungs causing the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF), common among Caucasians of northern European origin. Detection of endogenous CFTR expression is possible by a difficult and costly immunoprecipitation method but not by the most used western blotting method. Therefore, the goal of this project was to detect the endogenous CFTR expression …
