Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy
Reducing Pediatric Procedural Pain Using Virtual Reality, Emily Davis, Carmen Bandy
Scholars Week
Above all else, children require stability in their lives in order to develop a healthy perspective of the world. Feelings of instability can come from something as small as a change in schools. In the practice of pediatric medicine it is especially important to avoid these feelings of instability, which can lead children to develop healthcare-anxiety. Healthcare settings can be exceptionally emotionally taxing to children, because the children have a complete lack of control over their environment. This lack of control combined with fear and potentially pain can be incredibly distressing. While it is easy to disregard a child’s anxiety …
Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout
Stress Management In Nursing To Prevent Burnout And Employee Retention, Megan Mayo, Lauren R. Barto, Megan B. Trout
Scholars Week
This project was based on the fact that there is a severe nursing shortage happening in the United States. On average, nurses can have four to eight patients at one time which makes a twelve hour shift almost unbearable due to the stress of keeping all of the patients alive and satisfied with the care they are receiving. During the pandemic, staffing shortages have become one of the main issues faced by healthcare workers across the nation. Due to the staffing shortages and COVID-19 precautions, nurses have not only been taking on more patients but also have increased their workload …
Mathematical Model Of Devil Facial Tumor Disease (Dftd) Spread In Tasmanian Devils, Abigail Collins
Mathematical Model Of Devil Facial Tumor Disease (Dftd) Spread In Tasmanian Devils, Abigail Collins
Scholars Week
Applications of disease models can lead to insight on spread of diseases, population movements, and wildlife health safety. This exploration of mathematical models sought to determine the spread of wildlife disease, specifically devil facial tumor disease (DFTD). Tasmanian devil populations have been negatively affected by DFTD. The basic SIR disease model was modified to better fit the spread of DFTD, along with a network model to inspect the rate of infectivity. It was found that the population of Tasmanian devils will continue to decrease in size and multiple populations are connected to each other. Models of wildlife disease have the …

Probing Small Heat Shock Protein Chaperoning Activity Through The Interaction Between Myoglobin And Guanidine Hydrochloride, Jacob Mcdowell
Probing Small Heat Shock Protein Chaperoning Activity Through The Interaction Between Myoglobin And Guanidine Hydrochloride, Jacob Mcdowell
Celebration of Research
Myoglobin is a small biological protein found in most muscle tissues. When in the proper form (native/folded), myoglobin can serve its primary function: binding oxygen. However, like all proteins, myoglobin can denature through a variety of processes into a form that no longer binds oxygen. One denaturant, guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCl), is the biological product of protein metabolism. Another class of biological proteins is small heat shock proteins (sHSPs), which have the function of chaperoning other proteins to prevent the denaturing process. Previously, in physical chemistry lab, we explored the GuHCl-induced denaturing of myoglobin. Former Northwestern students used fluorescence correlation spectroscopy …
Enhancing The Honors Program Experience, Logan Krska
Enhancing The Honors Program Experience, Logan Krska
Research Days
The Governors State University Honors Program is now entering its 22nd year as an Honors Program. As Honors Program Co-Chair, I was tasked with researching student-centered initiatives to help enhance the honors experience by attending the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference. One such initiative is creating a “Video Lecture Series” where campus faculty, outside organizations, or students have to ability to impart their knowledge to others. As an Honors Program, we value students who have a commitment to becoming life-long learners, and a “Video Lecture Series” would facilitate beneficial professional development. Not only do we value student achievement, but we …
Critical Thinking In The Age Of Misinformation: Information Literacy For Citizenship, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jennfer Lobo Meeks, Barbara Robertson
Critical Thinking In The Age Of Misinformation: Information Literacy For Citizenship, Tamra Ortgies-Young, Jennfer Lobo Meeks, Barbara Robertson
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
As recent political events across the globe have shed a light on the fragility of democratic values, the role of the University in creating a framework for civic education becomes more urgent. Informed, caring and engaged citizenry must be a goal of higher education. Students currently face the emergence of faulty types of information - such as misinformation and disinformation, which undermines the notion of collective or public inquiry, not only within universities, but also within society as a whole. This challenge must be acknowledged and addressed by academic institutions.
Session presenters will provide an overview of their work, “Critical …

Women Reaching Women: How Mentors Can Affect Future Female Band Directors, Elisabeth Buzzell
Graduate Research Showcase
The purpose of this study is to explore what role models and mentors have on female music students, by interviewing pre-service and in-service female music educators. Seven female music educators were interviewed. All the women were sent panelist questions to prepare for the interviews. Four of the women were able to participate in a panel discussion that included students. Data was coded to find common trends within responses, such as work life balance, classroom environment, traits and gender role, equality, mentorship, as well as a focus on student questions focusing on confidence. Analysis of the discussion question answers seem to …

Single Parents Effect On Children, Danielle Harker
Single Parents Effect On Children, Danielle Harker
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
There are a ton of different family structures and one of those structures include single parent families. Single parents are parents who take care of their children on their own without the help of a significant other. A single parent can be a mom or a dad. At times it can be hard to tell how a child is affected due to how their parent became a single parent or how their family structure is. Therefore, the question my research project will be asking is how are children who have single parents emotionally and socially affected? Depending on the family …
Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan
Homosexual Persecution In The Holocaust, Ethan Ryan
Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
During the Holocaust, same-sex desiring men were persecuted alongside Jews, political prisoners, and other minority groups. The punishments that same-sex desiring men faced were directed at the act of homosexuality instead of the identity of homosexual. Incarceration in Nazi camps for same-sex desiring men included sexual violence and an attempt to convert these men to a heterosexual lifestyle. This research explores memoirs by homosexual holocaust survivors, including Heinz Heger and Pierre Seel, as well as experiences with same-sex desiring men written by a communist prisoner of Sachsenhausen, Harry Naujoks.

From Digital Commons To Alma/Primo: A Systems Interoperability Project, Sara Hoover, Jolinda L. Thompson
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
Background: In 2018 our library migrated to Ex Libris’s Alma and its discovery service Primo. Alma allows content from OAI-PMH compliant archives to be loaded to Primo for discovery. Our library has a Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) system and librarians were eager to explore including IR content in Primo. Post-migration a feed was established between the IR and Primo, but there were issues with adding all IR content and the feed was removed. Consequently, we wanted to explore alternatives that would allow for the integration of more selective IR content.
Description: For our pilot project, we explored the possibility …

Leveling Up, Nearly Falling, & Getting Back On The Ladder: Differentiating Library Research, Apa & Endnote Instruction For Even More Online Students While Not Hurting Yourself In The Process, Josette M. Kubicki
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Note to reviewers: This proposal is for a presentation that builds on what I meant to present at the 2021 conference. Due to a storm, a black-out occurred, and I couldn’t get back online in time to present most of it because my computer was so slow. The GICOIL moderator kindly offered me a break-out room at the end of the day, but only two people showed up, and an informal conversation was more suited. This proposal expands on that presentation and elaborates on what I did this year. I have a much faster computer now and will log in …
Medea Costume Design Concept, Annie Wolfzorn
Medea Costume Design Concept, Annie Wolfzorn
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Euripides’s Medea is a story about a woman’s heart being poisoned with pain and grief. Her pain demands to be felt and her grief demands to be heard. Over time, the grief sours from longing for her own death to longing for the death of others. Medea longs to ease the pain of her grief with an act of revenge. This grief is in response to her husband shattering the beautiful love they once shared. Consequently, he earns a cruel and devastating punishment—the brutal murder of his second wife, Glauce, her father, Creon, and his two children. In the process …
