The Impact Of A Mindfulness Mobile Application On Compassion And Psychological Well-Being, Marie Chamberlain, Carol Hundert Gonzales M.A., Colleen Conley Ph.D.
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The present study examined how the use of a mindfulness app affects compassion and mental health, specifically depression. Participants were randomized to a mindfulness intervention or waitlist control. We predicted the intervention would increase self-compassion, which, in turn, would decrease depression (i.e., self-compassion would act as a mediator). Further, we expected the intervention would increase compassion for others, which would decrease depression. Self-compassion mediated the relationship such that the intervention predicted increased self-compassion, which predicted decreased depression. Compassion for others did not significantly mediate the relationship. Findings provide evidence for an everyday tool to improve self-compassion and psychological well-being.

The Underrepresented And Unheard Voices: Children's Literature, Neira Hujdur, Orly Wolf
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
This presentation explores diversity and its prevalence/benefits within children's literature. It aims to present and promote the value of incorporating underrepresented and unheard voices in the classroom. The study also introduces resources and newly published books to educators through creative outlets like book talks and book trailers as well as through elaboration on specified children's book awards.

Healthcare With A Focus In Neurological Disease Solutions, Andrea Hernandez
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
There is a need for patient-centered care that is easily accessible to all PD patients given the serious implications of falls. Our goal was to examine the feasibility of delivering specialized physical and occupational therapy directly to the patient’ s home using telemedicine. As a result of this internship, I have had the privilege of participating in several other projects, such as Dr. Afshari’s iteration of this program to the NIH in a career development award. I am pleased to begin a new project alongside Dr. Afshari to expand our understanding of freezing of gait experienced by patients with PD.
Depressive And Anxiety Symptoms And Their Association With Sleep Consistency In Female College Students, Lora Djambov
Depressive And Anxiety Symptoms And Their Association With Sleep Consistency In Female College Students, Lora Djambov
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Sleep is a critical part of daily functioning. Recent work has highlighted the consistency of a person’s sleep schedule as an important factor in health (Phillips, 2017). College students often have inconsistent sleep patterns, including irregular increased napping (Adriansen et al., 2017), and increased wake time variability (Roane et al., 2015). These patterns adversely impact cognitive functioning, physical health, and mental health (Bei et al., 2016; Phillips et al., 2017; Murray et al., 2017), including higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Studies, however, have not examined sleep regularity and its association with these symptoms in college students (Fang et …

Human Phlp-3 (Txndc9) Database Research Project, Arden Luers, Stefan M. Kanzok
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
Human PhLP3, called TXNDC9, is a highly conserved protein within the eukaryotic domain but its function remains unknown. Previous work in our lab leads us to hypothesize that PhLP3 associates with microtubules and may be involved in the cytoskeletal organization of developing sperm, thus contributing to male fertility. This is a multi-database research project on the protein expression of PhLP3 in human cells, and a delve into relevant recent research findings, in preparation for an upcoming project in the Kanzok lab involving human PhLP3 overexpression to determine whether it binds to microtubules.
Rearing Malaria Mosquitos Of The Species Anopheles Stephensi, Giovanni Rodriguez
Rearing Malaria Mosquitos Of The Species Anopheles Stephensi, Giovanni Rodriguez
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The LUC insectary maintains a small colony of Anopheles stephensi, a genus of mosquito best known for being a transmission vector of blood-borne diseases such as Malaria. This colony is kept in a walk-in incubator held at 75-80% humidity with a temperature of about 27°C. Adult mosquitos are kept in trap buckets with mesh lids that allowed for blood-feeding using ketamine anesthetized mice. We were recently challenged with an unexpected significant die-off of most of our colony. Over the course of the last few months, we managed to sustain the living mosquitos enough to restore the colony to almost …
