Self-Efficacy & Perception Of Mental Well-Being, Sarah L. Capen-Becerra, Sophie K. Louis, Abigail Danzig, Olimpia Sansone Apr 2022

Self-Efficacy & Perception Of Mental Well-Being, Sarah L. Capen-Becerra, Sophie K. Louis, Abigail Danzig, Olimpia Sansone

Psychology Presentations

When young adults have high self-efficacy, they tend to exhibit more resilience to stress and other mental health problems. Additionally, women are reported to experience depression at higher rates than men, which might be explained by potential gender bias in current diagnostic criteria. Our study examined the influence of gender and mental health self-efficacy on depression symptoms as well as the interaction of these two variables on depression outcomes in college aged-students. Participants (N = 58) were tasked to fill out an anonymous Qualtrics survey based on the Gender Inclusive Depression Scale (GIDS; Martin et al. (2013), and an additional …

The Microbial Load On Used Disposable Face Masks: Exploring Sustainable Disinfection Methods, Clara Ray Apr 2022

The Microbial Load On Used Disposable Face Masks: Exploring Sustainable Disinfection Methods, Clara Ray

GS4 Student Scholars Symposium

Face masks have become common-place in public settings since the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, with many people choosing to wear masks in order to mitigate the risk of becoming infected with viral or bacterial infections. Two of the most widely-available types of masks are cloth masks, which may be reused if cleaned properly, and disposable surgical masks. Despite the fact that surgical masks are intended for one-time use, many people chose to store and re-wear them. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in biological contamination on surgical face masks after daily wear and overnight …

To What Extent Has Covid19 Impacted Substance Use Among Homeless Populations In Portland, Maine, Daniela Mason, Madison Chadbourne

Thinking Matters Symposium

COVID19 pandemic has vastly impacted all populations within our society, homeless populations in particular. This study aims to uncover how the COVID19 pandemic has affected substance use among the homeless population in Portland, Maine. In particular, this study asks to what extent has COVID19 impacted substance use among homeless populations in Portland, Maine? We asked individuals to participate via convenience sampling, whereby anonymous surveys were completed through Survey Monkey by staff members employed at Preble Street in Portland, ME, who have worked directly with the homeless population during the COVID-19 pandemic. We expect the results to suggest an increase in …

Impact Of Religion And Green Space On Local Suicide Rates In The United States, Linsie Zou Apr 2022

Impact Of Religion And Green Space On Local Suicide Rates In The United States, Linsie Zou

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This study aims to understand whether access to green spaces, such as forests, or affiliation to religious groups had an impact on American suicide rates in the years 2000 and 2010, times of economic expansion and recession, respectively. Multivariate regressions are estimated using a variety of county-level data, and the results will be compared for changes between 2000 and 2010. The results and analyses illustrate that urban spaces (rather than forested areas) have relatively lower rates of suicide. Counties with higher rates of adherents to the Catholic religion also had relatively lower rates of suicide when controlling for other economic …

Genetic Variation In Fat Depot Weights Is Diet- And Sex-Dependent In Mice, Nafia Naila Apr 2022

Genetic Variation In Fat Depot Weights Is Diet- And Sex-Dependent In Mice, Nafia Naila

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

The epidemic of obesity has been affecting individuals globally, with roughly 650 million adults obese in 2016 (WHO, 2021). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity increases the risk of multiple life-threatening diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, and overall results in a reduced standard of living. In this study, we manipulate animals’ diets with isocaloric high- (42% of kcals from fat) and low-fat (15% kcals from fat) diets. Here we report on the genetic basis for variation in fat depots, levels of sexual dimorphism, and in dietary response.

Susceptibility To Phishing And Victims’ Views Of Love, Romance And Red Flags: Economic And Psychological Coercion In Virtual Space, Anna Hart Apr 2022

Susceptibility To Phishing And Victims’ Views Of Love, Romance And Red Flags: Economic And Psychological Coercion In Virtual Space, Anna Hart

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Romance scams have increased 50% since 2019 and have cost victims about $304 million dollars in the last year (Federal Trade Commission, 2/10/2021). Romance scams also cause emotional distress (Buchanan & Whitty, 2014; Cross, Dragiewicz & Richards, 2018), with distress increasing for lonely victims and those who also were deceived into giving money. There is very little research on how an individual’s definitions of love and knowledge about potential ‘red flags’ in relationships contribute to becoming a victim of romance scams and monetary loss due to these scams. This study addresses this gap.

The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu Apr 2022

The Mediation Basic Psychological Needs Has On Leaderships Styles And Outcomes, Eric Zhu

Symposium of Student Scholars

There has been a focus on which leadership styles relate to certain outcomes, such as burnout, organizational commitment, and positive/negative affect. It appear that what predicts whether or not a person feels positively or negatively about their organization and how much burnout they experience is not predicted by leadership styles in and of itself, but rather how the leadership style satisfies or frustrates basic psychological needs. Although organizational commitment does not seem to be predicted by basic psychological needs solely and that leadership style does play a significant, if secondary, role in its prediction, I believe that to be due …

Thematic Use Of Non-Conformity In "Changing My Major" (Ft. Gay Panic), Yazmeen Mayes Apr 2022

Thematic Use Of Non-Conformity In "Changing My Major" (Ft. Gay Panic), Yazmeen Mayes

Symposium of Student Scholars

CW: Presentation includes references to sex and suicide.

This presentation is an in-depth score analysis of “Changing My Major” from the musical Fun Home by Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori, which is based on Alison Bechdel’s autobiographical memoir by the same name. The musical examines the similarities and differences between Alison and her father as she attempts to contruct a future without a queer elder to model it. This presentation demonstrates the collaborative, tight structure of thematic messaging in musical theatre. Overall, ““Changing My Major” personifies the show at large and celebrates the process of questioning as its own epic, …

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes Apr 2022

Understanding Humanity: Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Black Masculinity And Feminity For The Psyche, Kandice Fowlkes

Symposium of Student Scholars

As the intersection of race and gender is a feat for the strong Black man and strong Black woman, the double edged sword is the deterioration of mental health overlooked by the need to maintain the guise of perfection. The social disadvantages of this intersection include a myriad of traumas such as financial stability, violence and oppression, and the internal stigma of judgment, which causes Black men and Women to delay or go undiagnosed for mental health disorders. In turn, this enables an unstable community to unite for mental health reform. Aside from seeking medical help, the conversation of mental …
