Implementing The Option For 8-Hour Shifts Compared To 12-Hour Shifts To Protect The Well-Being Of Nurses And Patients, Savannah G. Bison, Madison R. Harden
Scholars Week
This project addresses the negative aspects of twelve hour shifts within the nursing profession and how a change to eight hour shifts leads to decreased burnout, increased job satisfaction, and a more positive work-life balance. The term ‘nursing shortage’ is often improperly used to imply only a deficit in registered nurses across the country; however, it is instead due to practicing nurses leaving the profession before retirement, especially in bedside positions. Nurses are searching for different paths for multiple reasons, but a common factor among all of them is burnout caused by the current system in place. This project addresses …

Leading With A Difference, Mark Bowen
Title III Professional Development Reports
An effective leader recognizes the differences of opinions among the team. In addition, the leader should encourage individuals to express their ideas to resolve the problem from their perspective. Their social and economic experiences will contribute to the narrative at hand. An effective leader will empower members to develop confidence in expressing their opinions. A confident leader will not be judgmental of the group's voice, allowing their contribution to be defined and contribute to the solidarity and growth among participants.

Sea-Phages Research Opportunity, Sarah Ballarin
Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
Research opportunity targeted for freshmen and sophomores through the SEA-PHAGES program. The goal of the research is to discover new bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) to help combat antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is a promising alternative to conventional antibiotics. Phages have also been widely used in the food industry to prevent microbial growth on certain foods and are currently being explored as a method for bioremediation of oil spills and wastewater treatment.
Last year, my research team discovered two new bacteriophages: Genamy16 and NovaSharks that were able to infect the bacteria Gordonia rubripertincta. These phages can possibly be used for …

Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
The goal of Science Alive is to provide a “sense of wonder” not only for the grade-school children but for the college students and their faculty as well. Science Alive serves to reinforce the scientific knowledge of local grade-school students and community members, while enhancing the education and career development opportunities for college students. Our group does this by providing opportunities for youth to explore science beyond the textbooks through hands-on, interactive discovery, which stimulates interest and fosters confidence for college and grade-school students alike. Our groups lead on-campus and in-class workshops, weekend clubs, after-school programs, and other community events. …

Pfizer Summer Growth Experience, Arman Kakkar
Trick to the Treat of Internships and Research
From May 9, 2022 till July 29, 2022, I served as a Research Intern at Pfizer. Specifically, I worked in the Vaccine Research and Development Sector in the High Throughput Clinical Immunoassays and Diagnostics Group (HCID). In this group, I was responsible for Phase 3 testing of clinical trial material for the Covid-19 Vaccine. Over this time, I learned a great deal about the process of vaccine production from start to finish. Additionally, I was able to make numerous connections. This is definitely an experience I would recommend to others.

Exploring Edi Strategies In Metadata And Cataloging, Tomeka Jackson, Jessica Serrao
Presentations
This webinar examines equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) strategies and challenges in metadata and cataloging. The presenters first investigate what EDI is and why it is essential to the field of librarianship. Next, they explore a brief historical timeline that shaped the events of EDI in metadata and cataloging. After exploring its origins, they then examine the strategies academic institutions have formulated, and particularly the work at Clemson University with the Libraries' Digital Collections metadata. This webinar aims to explore, analyze, and understand EDI techniques in librarianship and how they can be added to or addressed in participants' collections. The …

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship
Diffusion is a principle in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The rate of diffusion is affected by temperature, particle size, concentration, and material type. Students can model the rate of diffusion based on particle size by contrasting blue and yellow dyes. Two petri dishes containing agar-agar receive a drop of dye at the center. The radius of expansion is recorded over time. The variance of the distribution grows as 2=4, where 2 is the variance, D is the diffusion constant, and t is time. Graphing variance versus time gives a slope of 4D. Diffusion constants vary by particle size, allowing for …
Exploring The Role Of Emotional Stability And Remote Work As Resources In Detaching From Work, Brittany N. Ikner, Kristen Jennings Black
Exploring The Role Of Emotional Stability And Remote Work As Resources In Detaching From Work, Brittany N. Ikner, Kristen Jennings Black
River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The sizable increase in remote jobs within the last two years has led researchers to question how remote and in-person workers recover differently and what organizations can do to best facilitate their recovery from work. Yet, few empirical studies identify which individual and situational characteristics assist or inhibit recovery from work. Using Sonnentag and Fritz’s (2015) stressor-detachment model as theoretical framework, the proposed study investigates attentional resources (i.e., work location) and personal resources (i.e., emotional stability) that moderate the relationship of job stressors and well-being which is mediated by psychological detachment from work during non-work hours. Specifically, one’s levels of …

Higher education institutions are becoming increasingly diverse, and Latinx students are a major contributor to this diversity, as they are the largest and fastest growing minoritized population in the United States. Nevertheless, retention and completion gaps for Latinx students persist (Kolluri, 2021). Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) play a pivotal role in promoting educational equity for Latinx students, but they have traditionally been concentrated in urban areas and a small number of states. In future years, new HSIs will emerge largely in rural environments and states with rapidly growing Latinx populations, such as Georgia.
Informed by community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005), this …

This study explored the experiences of four pre-service science teachers while participating in a virtual book club. The participants were science education MAT students that were enrolled in a “Learner Differences” course during the summer semester. The participants read “Teaching Science for Social Justice” from Angela Calabrese Barton. They met virtually for an hour each week to discuss the ideas presented within the different book chapters. A total of 13 science education MAT students were part of the book club, but only four agreed to participate in the study. Data was collected in the form of course artifacts that included …
Facing Some Hard Truths: A Caep Action Research Project Results In Reflexivity, Reflection, & Revision, Melissa Comer, Nancy Kolodziej
Facing Some Hard Truths: A Caep Action Research Project Results In Reflexivity, Reflection, & Revision, Melissa Comer, Nancy Kolodziej
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
Per Ojeda (2010), for reflection to be effective it must include opportunity to improve performance. Writing the self-study report for the Council for the Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP) provided a perfect chance for the researchers to put effective reflection into action. Situated within a graduate-level literacy program, they implemented a collaborative action research project simultaneously with writing the CAEP self-study report. Guided by the research questions below, they learned valuable lessons, validated the program’s strengths, and faced some hard truths about its weaknesses.
- What practical applications can be learned from the CAEP self-study report?
- How can critical reflection be …

Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Learning Styles Reconsidered, Peter Tagtmeyer
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Study of individual differences in learning processes has a long history across several lines of psychology inquiry. Learning style theory (LST) is arguably a broadly recognized approach to education, embraced by educators theoretically and practically. Accommodation of individual learning styles with differential instruction is supported and endorsed globally, and well-funded. Yet empirical evidence in the literature that examines augmented learning achieved via learning styles accommodation in pedagogical practices is not compelling. Learning style theories are regularly researched in psychological and educational literature, and questions about the validity of findings persist. Currently LST research gives cause for many to regard learning …

E-Books Need Call Numbers To Be Discoverable, Henrik Spoon, Adam Chandler, Laura Daniels
Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference
Call numbers play a central role in the ability of libraries to shelve books next to other books on the same or similar subject. With e-books making up an increasing proportion of library holdings, it is important that e-books can be e-shelved and discovered along with their print counterparts. At the start of 2021, e-books in the Cornell University Library Catalog did not have the same detailed classification numbers in their MARC records that print books receive. This hobbles attempts to make e-books available on virtual shelves for serendipitous discovery and to distinguish collections of e-books in related subjects like …

Librarian Publications
This presentation details remediation work done on harmful legacy metadata as part of the Syracuse University Libraries digital collections migration of the Sideshow Performers Collection, which contains digitized images from the Ronald G. Becker Collection of Charles Eisenmann photographs. The discussion focuses on deconstructing the legacy information and reconstructing it in ways that center the individual performer depicted, rather than portraying them as a medicalized specimen.
