Orienting Patients To Their Own Care: Implementing Goals And Progress On Whiteboards, Grace Beer, Leah Mcgough
Orienting Patients To Their Own Care: Implementing Goals And Progress On Whiteboards, Grace Beer, Leah Mcgough
Scholars Week
Introduction: Goal-setting within the hospital setting can be a useful tool for health care professionals. By using a white board in a patient’s room, nurses can work with patients to create goals in their plan of care. Implementing daily goals on these boards can improve patient satisfaction, increase nurse-patient communication, and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Methods: We researched scholarly articles that discuss the use of goal-setting in clinical practice. These articles engage in the idea that patients visually seeing their goals helps them stay focused and motivated in their health care. The researchers used methods such as interviews, focus …
The Positive Effects Of Delayed Immersion Bathing For Newborns, Aubrey Stuart
The Positive Effects Of Delayed Immersion Bathing For Newborns, Aubrey Stuart
Scholars Week
Problem: Newborn infants were once bathed only 2-4 hours after birth. The rate at which newborns experienced hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and a difficulty with exclusive breastfeeding was once much higher than it is today.
Methods: This project was a meta-analysis of multiple clinical trials regarding delayed infant bathing. Three main studies that implemented a 24 hour or later bathing program were chosen and reviewed to assess for trends in hypothermia, hypoglycemia, and the exclusive breastfeeding rates of newborns.
Results: In each study reviewed, the rates of hypoglycemia and hypothermia decreased while the rates of exclusive breastfeeding increased.
Implications: By delaying newborn …

Implementing Universal Design Of Instruction In Information Literacy (And Almost Anything Else): The Success Of Our Students Depends On It., Peter R. Dean
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
This proposal focuses on the importance of universal design when teaching either one-shot library instruction or semester long information literacy courses. This presentation will discuss how all students can benefit from a course that is barrier-free to students who have already self-disclosed as students with disabilites.
This presentation also will discuss the intense reluctance of students with disabilities to self-disclose at the college level. And how some students may not even be aware of the fact that they have a learning disability—making it even more importance to implement (and hence include) universal design principles into your teaching methodologies.

Population Genetics And Morphometrics Of Overwintering Swamp Sparrows (Melospiza Georgiana) At Panola Mountain State Park, Ashley Mcmahon
Population Genetics And Morphometrics Of Overwintering Swamp Sparrows (Melospiza Georgiana) At Panola Mountain State Park, Ashley Mcmahon
Graduate Research Showcase
Grassland birds are facing the greatest decline of any bird guild in North America due to widespread loss of grassland habitats. Conservation efforts tend to focus on birds that breed in grasslands, but grassland habitat loss will also negatively affect populations that overwinter in grasslands. Three Swamp Sparrow subspecies (Melospiza georgiana georgiana, M. g. ericrypta, M. g. nigrescens) segregate on at least some of their breeding grounds but may mix on wintering grounds, which often includes grasslands. Philopatric passerines often also segregate by sex on wintering grounds. Thus, loss of overwintering grasslands may disproportionately impact both subspecies and sex, leading …

Development Of A Novel Cox Ii Mitochondrial Dna Marker For Rat Fecal Contamination.**, A'Aden Redhead
Graduate Research Showcase
Rodent feces can contain dangerous human microbial pathogens that are a serious health hazard to the human population. Currently, there is no known rapid assay to detect rodent fecal contamination. In this study, a rapid PCR-based mitochondrial DNA primer pair was constructed as it enabled the detection of rodent fecal pollution in environmental samples. Environmental samples were all tested using end-point PCR after filtration and then extraction of DNA using the DNeasy Powersoil pro kit. These primers were designed to specifically detect rodent feces that belong to the Rattus Sp. taxonomic group. Rodent samples from various counties in Georgia were …

My recent nationwide survey of 1,680 potential American voters shows that over two-thirds would have greater confidence in elections, and that over 40% would vote more frequently, if post-election audits were routinely conducted by independent CPAs credentialed for election auditing. Low voter confidence in American elections has triggered professional groups and state legislators to call for post-election audits. But who should conduct these audits? Post-election audits conducted by election administrators raises the issue of information asymmetry. My research explores whether having routine post-election audits conducted by independent Certified Public Accountants further credentialed for election auditing (“CPA Audits”) would affect the …

Suicidality Among College Students From 2000 To 2022: Findings From The National College Health Assessment, Jackson Gieger, Khanh Bui Dr.
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
With suicide being the second leading cause of death for college students, research concerning suicidality is imperative. The National College Health Assessment (NCHA), conducted by the American College Health Association (ACHA) each spring and fall semester since 2000, asks questions regarding suicide ideation and suicide attempts. There have been three versions of NCHA: NCHA-I (spring 2000 - spring 2008), NCHA-II (fall 2008 - spring 2019), and NCHA-III (fall 2019 - present). The analysis of NCHA-I and NCHA-II was limited due to the wording of the questions being different in the fall and spring. This leads to difficulty in comparing data …

Mental Health And Religiosity Among Sexual And Gender Minority Students At A Religious University, Danica Christy, Steve Rouse, Elizabeth Mancuso
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
University students are reporting increasing levels of psychological distress and suicidality. Consistent with the Minority Stress Model, Sexual and Gender Minorities (SGMs) are especially vulnerable; this is often heightened at religious universities that are non-affirming of SGM identities . We studied mental health and religiosity among 219 undergraduates at a religiously diverse, yet non-affirming university. SGMs (n = 68) reported higher rates of suicidality (U = 3267.5, p < .001, rho = .28) and psychological distress (t = 4.16, df = 221, p < .001, d = 0.60) than nonSGMs. This suggests that SGMs are at a higher risk of negative mental health outcomes. Intrinsic religiosity acted as a protective factor for suicidality for SGM and nonSGM students. Religious attendance correlated with higher rates of internalized homonegativity (rho = .35, p = .006) and identity superiority (rho = -.36, p = .005) for SGMs. These findings highlight the complicated relationship between SGM identity and religiosity. This study underscores the importance of offering affirming religious spaces for SGM individuals and providing increased psychological support for SGM students at religious universities.

Effects On Primary Endothelial Cells When Exposed To Polyethylene Terephthalate Nanoplastic, David Guzman
Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium
As the use of plastics becomes more predominant in our environment, the interactions between nanoplastics and the human body have increased dramatically. One of the most common and prevalent plastics is polyethylene, and more specifically polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Tissue exposure to nanoplastics occurs through surface contact upon ingestion or inhalation where nanoplastics can pass readily through the epithelial layer. Directly beneath gut and lung epithelia is the endothelial layer of capillaries. Very little is known about the interactions between polyethylene and human cells, with no information currently available on its effects with the endothelial layer. Our previous research showed that …

Accurate ascertainment of genetic risk can be potentially lifesaving for patients who inherit cancer promoting mutations. However, even with the most extensive panel testing clinically available, a large number of patients will test negative despite family history of cancer or test positive for a variant of unknown significance (VUS). For these patients, clinical management is complicated; patients want to know their risk, and may fear disease they are not at great risk for (benign VUS) or they may not be given access to potentially lifesaving early screening procedures (pathogenic VUS). ATM has proven a challenge to clinicians due to its …

Effects Of Michigan Opioid Laws On Prescriber Practices In The Emergency Department, Lydia Ross, Gary Kanner, Claire Pearson
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction: Opiate analgesics (OA) are responsible for more overdose deaths than any other medication class. Michigan is among the states most greatly affected by the opioid epidemic, and in late 2017, the Michigan Opioid Laws were passed in efforts to decrease opioid associated addiction and overdose deaths. This set of laws provides regulation of OA prescriptions and to increase patient awareness of the associated risks of opioid use. These laws collectively require a physician to educate the patient on harms of opiates, provide substance abuse disorder services in the setting of an overdose, establish a relationship with the patient, obtain …

ABSTRACT BODY:
Background: Hypertension (HTN) affects nearly 80 million people in the United States. A patient’s blood pressure (BP) measurement may influence the number of antihypertensives prescribed. Providers often do not recheck BP when a patient’s measurement is elevated despite research supporting that remeasuring may result in a significant decrease in BP. We hypothesized that patients who have BP remeasured in clinic would have lower BP values and thus less antihypertensive medication. In our academic general internal medicine (GIM) clinic, providers are encouraged to manually repeat BP if elevated on vitals taken by medical assistants using an automated cuff at …

ILS vendor Knowledge bases (KB) are built in a black box. The quality of the metadata is not the concern of the ILS vendor which then leads to missing data, which impacts discoverability. Comparing records of two ILS vendors KBs has shown a disparity in how they manage metadata. We are evaluating multiple ebook publishers’ data in the KB based on the availability of call numbers and subject headings while looking at resource usage.
