A Tale Of Two Scents: Scent Preferences Of Naïve And Experienced Pollinators, Scout N. Steinhiser Apr 2023

A Tale Of Two Scents: Scent Preferences Of Naïve And Experienced Pollinators, Scout N. Steinhiser

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

Mounting evidence of pollinator decline and its repercussions on agriculture and plant diversity means that scientists must work to understand the details of plant-pollinator interactions. Though there are many facets to the relationship between plants and pollinators, one major mediator of this relationship is scent. As much is already known about the scent make-up of Narcissus and its pollinator partners, it is a great model system for additional research. This is also true for the insect species Vanessa cardui, a generalist pollinator found worldwide that has most likely come into contact with Narcissus and its scent. The objective of this …

Pollinators And Flowering Resources In Louisville Urban Green Spaces, Sarah Hobbs Apr 2023

Pollinators And Flowering Resources In Louisville Urban Green Spaces, Sarah Hobbs

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

Urban Greenspaces can appear in many different forms such as parks, urban orchards, and community gardens. These spaces provide important ecosystem services such as enhanced biodiversity, improved soil health, and increased carbon sequestration. Greenspaces such as parks and community gardens have been relatively well studied in the last few decades compared to urban orchards, despite the multitude of ecosystem services that can be provided or enhanced by these orchards. We hypothesize that urban orchards will provide the optimal conditions for pollinator communities because urban orchards normally have the greatest variety of vegetation and flowering resources, which is positively correlated with …

Fossil Marine Vertebrates From The Mid-Graneros Shale (Upper Cretaceous: Mid-Cenomanian), Russell County, Kansas, Usa, Austin M. Salvino

2023 Midwest Ecology & Evolution Conference

The upper Graneros Shale are deposits of the late Cretaceous (ca. 100 Ma.) Western Interior Seaway in North America. Various vertebrate fossils have been located within the deposit, but detailed documentation had yet to be conclusively reported. This study takes into consideration the remains of fossil fishes from this uppermost Graneros shale location. The specific Graneros shale was in Russel County Kansas (Fig 1B). A location once containing a shallow marine environment of the Cretaceous Western Interior Sea. The specimens and fossilized vertebrate evidence found provide sufficient support of previous paleoecology inferences made in other locations containing Graneros shale deposits. …

Virginia’S Lost History: Analyzing Delisted Historical Sites For Future Preservation Efforts, Caleigh Waddell

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Important historical sites typically get entered into the Virginia Historic Registry, and currently, there are over 3,100 locally and/or federally registered places. 58 sites have been delisted - this project attempts to answer questions regarding why they were removed as they spatially relate to one another and the state regions they lie in. This will identify common problems to historic sites, thus guiding solutions for future preservation.

Approximately 20% of children and adolescents in the United States have documented mental health issues. However, although we know that about 90% of children with mental health concerns come from low- and middle-income countries, there is very little information regarding the prevalence of mental health issues among children and adolescents living in the Dominican Republic.

Project Based Learning, Christopher Imm Apr 2023

Project Based Learning, Christopher Imm

Sabbatical Projects

Project-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogy which encourages students to be actively involved in their learning process through gaining information to solve real-world problems with projects. In areas of STEM education, PBL can supplement the traditional classroom lecture, where students have a predominantly passive role in the learning process. Through practical activities, interactive discussions, independent reflection and/or team cooperation, students achieve the desired learning outcomes.

Students As Partners In The Library: Creating Meaningful Information Literacy Instruction Together, Rachel Fundator, Samantha Legrand Apr 2023

Students As Partners In The Library: Creating Meaningful Information Literacy Instruction Together, Rachel Fundator, Samantha Legrand

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

  • In an effort to create more student-centered and inclusive learning environments, instructors are using pedagogical approaches, such as students-as-partners (SAP), to bring student voices into the conversation about teaching and learning and to invite students to make meaningful choices about what happens in the classroom (Cook-Sather et al., 2019). Libraries can and should explore ways to incorporate SAP into our offerings (Salisbury et al., 2020). In libraries, student partners can become co-creators of information as they develop goals and curricula and bring interdisciplinary perspectives from across the institution to the development of information literacy (IL) programs. By inviting students into …

Reproductive Health In America: A History Of Patriarchal Control, Hailey Mccool Mar 2023

Reproductive Health In America: A History Of Patriarchal Control, Hailey Mccool

Undergraduate Research Conference

The United States is often referred to as the land of opportunity and the home of the free, yet today, those who challenge the patriarchal system are not treated fairly or equitably. Historically, from owning land to voting women have fought for the same rights enjoyed by men. The effort of early feminist movements paved the way for the Supreme Court to protect women’s reproductive rights through Roe v. Wade. For decades, women were able to make a choice regarding their reproductive health. However, in just the past year (2022), the Supreme Court ruled to strike down Roe v. …

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis Mar 2023

Antagonistic Pleiotropy In Alzheimer's Disease, Annie Hollis

Undergraduate Research Conference

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease; specifically having two copies of the APOE ε4 allele greatly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in older age. Studies have attempted to relate an antagonistic pleiotropy hypothesis to this gene, i.e., the ε4 allele has positive effects on cognition and memory in early life and negative effects later in life. Many of these studies have had several limitations and conflicting results, such as testing adults in upper middle age or comparing the absence of the ε4 allele with the presence of at least one ε4 allele. Studies …

Covid-19 Vaccine Anxiety In The New Roaring 20s’, Sana S. Mahar

Research Days

Over the last two years, the discussion on vaccines has grown exponentially. The decision to be vaccinated, while to some is a “no brainer”, is now a debatable topic. The purpose of this presentation is to investigate some of the root causes for vaccine anxiety in the last two years. For this analysis, I will use reputable media sources to identify vaccine anxiety references within political, medical, and social media contexts and the types of anxiety conveyed; namely fear, anxiety, and distrust within vaccines. Politically in the last 2 years, Donald Trump’s ideologies of the danger of vaccinations lead to …

The Effects Of Eye Pressure And Diabetes On Vision, Rinsa Reji Mar 2023

The Effects Of Eye Pressure And Diabetes On Vision, Rinsa Reji

Research Days

Vision is the primary sense that allow us to connect with the world. The optic nerve contains millions of nerve fibers that send visual messages to the brain which enables vision. The optic nerve is located at the back of each eye and connects directly to the brain. The optic nerve can be damaged due to high eye pressure and the condition is known glaucoma. The high eye pressure or intraocular pressure increases when the flowing fluid inside the eyes, also known as aqueous humor, builds up instead of draining out. The aqueous humor usually drains through the tissue called …
