In this interactive workshop, participants will develop strategies rooted in informed learning for partnering with disciplinary instructors in higher education courses to advance students’ information practices and learning. Informed learning is an approach to information literacy that describes how students may use information in situation-specific ways to learn (Bruce, 2008). Highlighting how information-focused learning activities are an integral part of the learning process, informed learning emphasizes the need for students to learn about using information at the same time they are learning about subject content. This study explores the Other Race Effect (ORE) in infants, which is the difficulty individuals have in differentiating and remembering faces of different races or ethnicities. This study aims to investigate how audiovisual exposure affects infants' processing of faces of their own and other races. Based on the Intersensory Redundancy Hypothesis (IRH), the study hypothesizes that audiovisual exposure will improve newborns' ability to perceive faces of their own and other races. The study will utilize a familiarization trial and a visual paired comparison (VPC) trial with sets of multimodal own- and other-race face stimuli presented synchronously and asynchronously to assess …

The discovery of the human microbiome has led to an increased interest in its interactions with the immune system and disease. Emerging evidence suggests that there is a relationship between various types of cancers and the microbiome. More recently, the application of probiotics in conjunction with anticancer agents has been observed. This project aims to evaluate the importance of bioinformatic analysis in current studies that observe the effects and role of specific probiotics in various cancer studies. This analysis focuses specifically on colorectal cancer and the administration of specific probiotics to diminish side effects from cancer treatment.

The outreach tactics and target population of non-governmental organizations vary by country and political & cultural climates. This project centers on NGO outreach to different populations of at-risk youth in both the Western and Eastern hemisphere. In Italy, there exists a generation of children of immigrants that are not automatically granted citizenship due to Italy's traditional naturalization laws. In Vietnam, the Khmer ethnic minority makes up 1.38% of the Vietnamese population and is a traditionally agrarian group. Emma Geiser is a recipient of the Mellon Foundation Unpaid Academic Internship Award in Spring 2023. This poster is the result of an internship at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs as a member of the Public Opinion/Survey team at the Lester Crown Center. She was concurrently enrolled in PLSC 370, the internship class for the Political Science department eligible for Engaged Learning. The goal for enrollment in this course is both to gain exposure working with political science topics in the real world and develop professional communication skills.

Background: Early diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) can delay its vascular complications, but the active search for T2D results in inefficient use of resources. Simple methods like anthropometry or clinical history could help prioritize laboratory testing in individuals with risk of T2D. We evaluated non-invasive clinical measurements to pre-screen for new T2D patients.

Methods: We used the 2017-2018 NHANES database as the discovery cohort, and identified age, sex, BMI, waist circumference, and family history of T2D (FHD) as predictor variables. This workshop will provide participants with the ability to create immersion sets and story for language acquisition through a multimedia format. We will learn to create and maintain structure through storyboarding and introduce participants to basic camera technique. Students can expect to learn to use shot framing, camera angles, and camera movement to lower the affective filter and generate engaging repetition of target vocabulary/grammar structure and breathe life into asynchronous language lessons.
