In the last decade, the traditional college-aged population (ages 18–22) has shifted from Millennials to Gen Z. This generational shift has necessitated pedagogical change, as discovered w/the changing response to a long-used lesson on scientific information literacy. The lesson, which had been used since 2013, specified a pre-class assignment of reading three different types of scientific articles & an in-class discussion about various aspects of the articles, led by the sciences research instruction librarian. Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) is a paramount advancement for the cultural and linguistic rights for indigenous peoples across Latin America, including Mexico. Nonetheless, in this country, IBE in higher education has faced arduous challenges in its implementation. The minoritization of indigenous languages (ILs) in the educational model for intercultural universities and programs makes IBE a contested educational battlefield throughout Mexico regarding the relevance of ILs. This paper explains the sociolinguistic negotiation processes among Maya-Spanish bilingual students at the Maya Linguistics and Culture (MLC) program at the Universidad de Oriente. A slide deck used in a WRT 120 class taught in a low-tech setting. The purpose of the lesson was to convey the importance of asking helpful questions and of researching one's own interests. This lesson took approximately 60 minutes in a 75 minute session and students left with several dozen questions that will, ideally, help them with crafting their seed texts and future essays.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney( UNK) is completing an extensive renovation to the Calvin T. Ryan Library. Nebraska’s 1% for Art Law requires that 1% of all state-funded projects be set aside for a public art commission. The Nebraska Arts Council spearheaded UNK’s search and out of over 100 submissions the successful applicant was Leslie Iwai, an accomplished artist with a history of creating thought-provoking pieces in public spaces, galleries and museums. Flocculation is a phenomenon found in yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae in which cells aggregate in response to stressful environmental conditions. This occurs as the result of the interaction of flocculin proteins on the plasma membrane with mannose residues on the surface of other yeast cells which is often exploited in the brewing process to avoid expensive filtration steps. Guanidine is a chaotropic agent which reduces the stability of proteins by weakening the hydrophobic effect. Since it is believed that flocculation is dependent on protein-mannose binding interactions, if the structure of the flocculin proteins is altered by guanidine, their functionality …

Cell adhesion includes various processes and is essential in cell communication and regulation. The mechanical interactions between a cell and its extracellular matrix control the behavior and function of a cell. In this project, we are studying cell attachment in different ways. The epidermal monostrato layer is a vertical and horizontal interaction and is not accounted for in usual assay protocols so I wanted to investigate this by creating an assay including multiple cell layers, a monolayer and an attached layer, to further develop a protocol for optimal cell-to-cell attachment. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) affects more than 2 million Americans each year. S100β protein acts as a biomarker for TBI– studies have shown that micromolar levels of S100β are dangerous to neuronal health. Our plan for the summer was to experiment with whether miRNA-4705 could inhibit the production of S100β or not. To get started on the transfection, we had two hurdles to overcome. One of them was to find an efficient s100B primary antibody and the second was to ensure our s100B siRNA worked. Urban environments contain environmental legacy issues that can have long-term negative public health consequences. Investigating these legacy issues can help constrain potential sources and their impact on communities. This study focuses on street sediment found in Terre Haute, Indiana, a city with an extensive history of coal-fired power production, high-traffic volumes, steel manufacturing, and Pb-based paint usage. This research specifically focuses on Terre Haute’s Sheridan Park community. Six bulk street sediment samples were analyzed by pXRF at DePauw University. This analysis revealed elevated concentrations of Pb (22-152 ppm), As (8-15 ppm), Cu (35-237 ppm), and Zn (149-634 ppm) in all …

This exploratory study examined the effect posting art on social media has on artists’ views of their own art and desire to create. The role of social media in the production, sharing, and purchasing of art has increased significantly in the past years. Thus, the importance of advertising one’s art through social media has also increased. Using a 35-question survey completed by 43 people, this study investigated how the emergence of online communities, and the pressure to gain a following and please their online audiences, has influenced artists’ views of their own work. In general, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provide a framework for gathering, organizing, and analyzing spatial data, that is visualized through maps. By arranging spatial information into coincident layers, GIS analyses help reveal deeper insights into a study area by identifying not only where features of interest are located, but also why patterns or processes are occurring.
