In the past play has prepared children for life by teaching: fair play, cooperation, compromising skills, mediation skills, and responsibility. Character skills learned through play promote community and are universally accepted. The games of the past teach students today those exact same skills.

In the Fall of 2003, an initiative to develop and install a wind turbine on the University of Rhode Islands Kingston Campus was proposed by an undergraduate student, Courtney Blodgett. To spearhead this initiative, the Renewable Energy Club (REC) was created and recognized by the Student Senate, and support was received by the URI Offices of the President and Provost. The University recognized the benefits of investing in a wind turbine both in terms of money spent on energy costs, and in promoting research in renewable energy. I Want A Divorce: When The Professional Becomes Personal In Academics, Angela West Crews, Gordon A. Crews, Mark L. Dantzker, Reid C. Toth, Jeffrey P. Rush
Criminal Justice Faculty Research
Contractual relationships between faculty members and departments are like marriages and tenured relationships like marriages with children. If either party wants out, the implications can be personally and professionally devastating. While faculty quality is periodically evaluated by performance in teaching, scholarship, and service, one’s ability to develop and maintain successful personal relationships within academic environments may impact, even override, acceptable professional performance. Roundtable participants will discuss leaving institutions and being asked to leave institutions due to the personal affecting the professional, seeking other employment after an academic “divorce” ("remarriage"), professional versus personal loyalties, and other related topics.

This interactive session focuses on recognizing and constructing meaningful learning objectives which relate content and teaching methodology to assessment. Using Finks taxonomy as a framework to create significant learning experiences, participants will actively identify learning objectives, teaching, methods, and assessment modalities which promote deep learning and maximize student success. Active learning needs a dynamic construct to be successful. With Fink's taxonomy as the basis of this construct, participants will engage in learning tasks to develop their practical understanding of a broad understanding of content and 'beyond-content' objectives, teaching/methods, and assessment modalities to optimize student learning and success. When Hybrids Go Wrong. How Hybridization Can Create Invasive Species., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens
Plant Science Presentations and Proceedings
Gene flow is the movement of genes from one plant population to another. Gene flow is a natural process and a part of plant evolution. There are two ways for gene flow to occur in plants. The first is through sexual reproduction – pollen lands on a flower and a viable seed develops. The second method is through dispersal of seeds and/or vegetative plant parts (e.g. stolons, rhizomes). Gene flow can produce hybrid offspring with an increased or decreased ability to survive in the landscape. If hybrid offspring have some advantage in the environment, they could become invasive.
